A September 1978 'Tune in Tommorow' column from Jon Michael Reed officially announces the departures of Judge Lowell (William Johnstone) Alma Miller (Dorothy Blackburn) and Betsy Stewart (Suzanne Davidson).

I know Betsy continued to appear, so I wonder if this refers to contract status-they went recurring?

July 66 newspaper summary (slightly tongue in cheek)

Donald Hughes, a lawyer, tells Sandra she will be getting her divorce from Roy McGuire in a week. Sandra thinks that's just fine, but doesn't like the prospect of going to court. The last time she was in a hall of justice, the judge gave her a year in prison with time off for good behavior. Roy McGuire is in prison. Sandra does not want him to have anything to do with their baby. Jimmy, when he gets out. Maybe she will marry Hal Harper. Sandra gets mad at lawyer Hughes when he informs her Harper will not be able to adopt Jimmy unless Roy McGuire gives his consent. Later, Sandra is seen leaving Dr. David Stewart's home with Dr. Bob (no last name). They sit on her front porch she talking about her son, he talking about his. For the sake of brevity, we leave out scenes alluding to Amanda, Neal, Sara Fuller, and Ellen. Also, we cannot explain what they were up to.

I love JM..she is so down to earth and appreciative of her time on the show, and so nice that she still stayed in contact with DH and KH over the years.

Years ago, some ATWT fans criticized her when she appeared to cringe at a clip of her work from the show. They took this to mean that she was somehow ashamed of her time on the soap, which I didn't interpret it that way at all. This little snippet proves my theory that JM is just very critical of her performance, especially since she was still very inexperienced and "green" on camera.

In fact, I would hazard a guess that most actors who did soaps and are reluctant to speak of it are that way because they are super critical of their performances and don't particularly wish to discuss anything in which they may not have performed up to a certain standard. We all know that soap production moves so fast that it doesn't always yield the best performances.

Personally, I try not to judge them to harshly. I know what it is like to act, perform in front of a camera and judge myself and be very critical, so I can sort of empathize a little with that feeling.

Yeah I never took her discomfort with her own work at having anything to do with the show. She speaks openly and warmly of her time on ATWT - get Meg Ryan to talk about hers and see what she says in comparison. But she is, like so many actors/resses, self-conscious, tough on herself. And even if we liked her work then, she has obviously grown as a woman and actress.

Meryl Streep once said in an interview that she cringes when watching herself in "French Lieutenant's Woman". I mean even the most talented of performers are tough on themselves!

    • I loved today's episode....shocker LOL Dani & Andre were so cute and adorable. Vernon trying to cover his tracks with Anita, while holding his own with Leslie. And the pièce de résistance, Eva & Kat. Soooooo goood!!!
    • According to the newspaper columnists at the time of Mark Dante's return, Gerald Gordon had been a favorite of Fred Silverman, who left ABC for NBC and took Gordon with him. Silverman supposedly put him on a contract with NBC. Gordon return to "General Hospital" occurred after Silverman left NBC so Gordon may have been in need of work and he may have left Monty on good terms. His pairing seems very C-story at best based on synopses but maybe there was more to it.
    • I am truly at a loss for words about today's episode. I have no clue what they are trying to do or where this Luna story is going. I was literally dumbfounded.
    • I'm inclined to agree with you and I loved her at Santa Barbara.
    • I haven't watched DAYS in years, so I have some questions for anyone who can answer them. Is the show actually acknowledging that Jeremy abused Stephanie?  The things he did to her back in 2007 were reprehensible.  I wasn't watching too much when that was happening, but I seem to remember that the show (at the time) didn't outright label him an abusive partner and instead acted like he was just badly behaved or something like that.  Could someone who was watching back then tell me how they remember it?
    • It also strangely happened while the story was airing. You had a gothic and spooky story that because it got eyeballs ended up being dragged out and turned into camp. Marlena starts talking to herself constantly with that voice, she’s strapped to the bed for a never ending exorcism, would almost die multiple times during the process, and then everyone would just leave her there with Caroline Brady sitting next to her holding a rosary. Reilly had the show so segregated that when Carrie found out what was happening in practically her next scene she was like I’m praying for Marlena. Now what are we going to do about Sami? I don’t know about anyone else, but I would probably stop my storyline for at least a couple of episodes and have to go see my stepmother that had a huge part in raising me floating around with those eyes in her beautiful penthouse. It was just so stupid, and when it started I didn’t necessarily agree with the story being told, but at least it was taken seriously.
    • Yes, I feel the same way. I get the reasoning behind hiring him. He was playing a very similar character on RH, and they were in a pinch. I also found his accent very distracting. But then, Bev also didn't sound like she was from Illinois, and it didn't bother me a bit. That said, I've always had a great deal of sympathy for the situation he was in. It's never easy to take over from someone popular with fans, and how the TPTB were always insisting he was coming back eventually was another issue. Hearing he was going through it in his personal life on top of that makes me even more sympathetic. I found the article where it mentioned he had worked on both soaps at the same time. This was written a while after he left the show. Interesting that he was open to returning and that fans were asking him about when Alan was going to get out of jail. To this day, I don't understand why they kept Alan off the canvas as long as they did. He should have been there in the thick of Roger's return (without the dumb attempt to kill him), especially while he was married to Alex. To me, Raines was lacking in a lot of qualities needed for Alan. I think he would have been a better Mike Bauer.  They took five years to bring Alan back. They could have found someone better. No one is irreplaceable. Anyone who took over the role would have been different from Bernau. But somewhere out there was an actor who would have had the suaveness, intensity, and charm that IMO the character needed.

    • I did feel like JFP's Y&R was decent. Of all the recent HW/EP swaps, her period was very safe but watchable. Nothing spectacular but better than what we have now.
