^^Right, and that's so refreshing. I think he's got a lot going for him, a talented and charismatic young actor, and a Buchanan to boot. He has a good snarky deadpan that genuinely cracks me up, and it comes from character, unlike David where it's like: set-up, joke, insert laugh here. I hope all of the work he's about to put into this character doesn't go unrewarded by giving him the boot and recasting with some vapid fitness model come next summer. Of course never say never, trust NO one, but I do actually believe that they wouldn't fire him or his sister at this point. They may *nudge* him to buy some Bowflex dumbells however.

I suspect the only story Matthew will be allowed (unless Nate tanks for good) is as the "Mean Rich Kid" to properly delineate him and Nate, as the show primly informs us that we should be rooting for good ol' Nate and Danielle and that we will only be allowed to enjoy Matthew and/or Destiny once we are done. I say [!@#$%^&*] that. And while I think Eddie's very good and plays bitchy Matthew very well, I don't buy that persona for the character. I just don't. At heart Matthew is a sweet, good-natured kid. He may lash out over things, but to turn into a mini-Kevin in his worst days or something, no, I don't believe it. Nor do I buy Nate [!@#$%^&*] Salinger - who looks more like a "NYC Prep" castmember than Eddie Alderson ever will - as a salt of the earth boy from the barrio. Lenny Platt looks like he should be playing one of the high school jock bullies in the inevitable remake of The Goonies. He'll be the guy screaming, "Andy, you Goonie!" Matthew is the underdog and the scrappy hero. He should be carrying the new teen set.

If David Gregory must be on this show I'd love to see Ford's film career totally collapse and have him becoming a scheming male gigolo for Kelly or something. He could [!@#$%^&*] her by night and spend his days blackmailing Jessica with her pregnancy to gain access to Lord family resources to reignite his Brilliant Career. Sort of a junky bootleg Marco Dane, and we know how he ended up. Though you really could kill Ford.

The main problem with Ford is lack of charisma. He also can't really act. So he doesn't work as a leading man or as a bad boy. I think they did plan for him to be a bad boy, the "he's so hot and you know he's right, he's just being real!" type, but he was unsympathetic and repulsive. So now they want us to pity him. Either way I think he fails.

I hope Matthew has a way out but he is one of many Buchanan men who is seen as being boring and worthy either only of death or being used to make other more "edgy" men look better. I think they either gave up when he did not help make wooden Danielle more popular, or they never planned on having a real relationship between them and he was just there to help show us her awesomeness (she cures paralysis!) before her senile soulmate arrived. Even if Nate flops, I think Matthew is going to be third or fourth wheel, perhaps OLTL's version of Evan Walsh, one of my favorite ATWT characters, only more enraged, because he and Clint are angry and ASA ASA ASA!!!

I don't think they ever had any real plans for Ross or Eli. They were just there, perfect to serve the plot when it is time to try to run interference for a character who has, IMO, never been able to carry a story on her own (Tea), and a character who died years ago (Todd). They are put with Blair to mark time. Eli/Blair was the definition of marking time; it's one of the reasons I didn't get involved, even though I enjoyed seeing Blair in a happy relationship for about three months.

I liked Matthew and Danielle a lot. But I knew when they began running promos for this year's musical that he was fucked and she was moving on to Geritol McLatex. The positioning and placement of Dani/Nate vs. Age-Appropriate Jew/Black Girl said it all. KM is outshining TSJ lately. I don't think she's bad, I think it's her story. Like KA before her, they haven't thought any story or persona for Dani through except "teenage girl = romance and lots of airtime!" That was what sank Starr for years, and we still don't know if she will recover.

I think David Gregory is actually talented and proved it surprisingly in some of the otherwise-hollow "emotional" scenes with Inez, etc. He wept real tears. The problem is the character and writing are completely empty and it is a totally cliche, by the numbers "soap redemption." I don't believe it. If he'd come on playing a junior white collar type or something, maybe a musician, I think he'd have had a fair shot at being paired with someone.

For me there's just something very plastic and condescending about the whole Ford character -- I don't know how the actor is in real life of course, but just the whole look at their perfect bodies, isn't this what you want, and they're soulful too. I feel like they were created in a lab.

I do remember Matthew and Dani having a fan base, I just wonder if the show had any plans for them or if they were just using Matthew to introduce her.

That's the thing, he has those good acting moments then some glaringly hokey ones. And I never want to see a piece of gum in his mouth again, that drove me up the wall.

BTW, did anyone catch Ford's not-so-throwaway line about working out being his escape from stress/tension in his life? I could be reading too far into it, but it seemed like yet another attempt by the writers to rationalize his very existence and tie "intelligent" psychological underpinnings to their whoring of his shirtlessness. Just like with the totally predictable revelation that he's a womanizing badboy because of his mommy issues.

Exactly, and when an actor is flexing his bicep while talking on his cell phone, flexing his tricps while leaning against a chair, or flexing his abs and not breathing (acting no-no #1!) it's sometimes hard to give him the benefit of the doubt and not see him as totally vain and self-involved. If I was half naked on TV would I want to look my best? Absolutely. But it's smarmy and off-putting when the audience can see that you're trying too hard.

+1 that's exactly it. I mean soap hunks have largely spent more time in the gym than in acting class ever since really the 80s when the six pack became de rigueur, but you put down exactly what's wrong with someone like Ford. And when I read comments (not on here much, mind you) where people do go on about how excited it was to see him shirtless or whatever, I just have to wonder why they're not watching soft core porn or something instead...

I think Ford has charisma and can act. The role is just ill-concieved. I thought he was pretty decent in the beginning up until they made him a man whore and had him go after a girl in HS. Giving him a family has been a msitake and now everything they do seems forced. They need to jsut stop trying to make the character happen. Too bad bc I like the actor and thought he would have been a great CJ recast
