That sounds like an interesting read! So much of that abysmal period in AW history ties in with NBC's general woes during the Fred Silverman era, when it seemed like everything the network even THOUGHT about doing failed and failed hard.

I recall being in favour of the Matt/Donna pairing at the time, but I remember very few details. It made a bit of a change for both of them while staying within current core families.

The pairing seemed to be well-received. JFP presumably got the ick as Anna Stuart wasn't one of her avatars so the character was humiliated and degraded (and supposedly was going to be killed off if not for fan backlash - I think Donna was generally more popular with fans than with a number of PTB over the years).

I don't watch the show, but I watched some clips of his romance on there and he does a wonderful job with the whole stoic widower finding new love routine, especially when he told this woman that if his wife came back from the dead he would still choose her, even though she was less attractive than this woman (which on paper sounds awful but he sold it). He really does look like his parents combined.

He has this very raw, emotional scene with Michele Pfeiffer where he talks about the death of his wife that really hooked me.
