David Jacobs hiring his ex-wife’s husband reminds me of Jack Webb, who hired his ex-wife (Julie London) and her husband (Bobby Troup) to star on “Emergency”. Very civilized!

David Jacobs gave us two great - and very different - TV shows. What a legacy!

Dallas the family/business conflict-based show with the heart and roots of a western. Knots Landing the community-based show that set itself apart with high emotional stakes character driven storytelling.

RIP David Jacobs and thank you for your contributions to primetime television.

I also partial to his 3rd series he helped create in the late 80s called Paradise/guns of Paradise.  It lasted 2 full seasons and partial 3rd season.

It was a hybrid of self contained and hybrid stories that took place in California in the late 19th century about orphan kids coming to live with their single uncle..who had a love/hate relationship with the town banker (they became a couple later).

He had great ideas and sadly he wasn't always listened to.

Fun thing about Paradise - they had a young actor auditioning for the third season; they felt he was talented - too talented for a series that was probably getting cancelled, so they adviced him to take the other job he had lined up. The actor? Luke Perry. The show? Beverly Hills 90210.

Maybe David Jacobs had nothing to do with that audition, but from now on, I will imagine he had a part in creating the defining prime time soaps of the 90s.

Has the original Knots bible/treatment ever been made publicly available and posted online? I don't know if David Jacobs ever went into detail in any of his interviews, but I'm curious about the couple that became Gary and Val and what if anything of their initial concept got carried over into the Seaview Circle Ewings' storyline.

After a lot of delay and a lot of IRL priorities, I've wrapped KL Season 6. I have stuff to say about it for those who care, but my commentary on the show will be considerably spaced out and in more generalized blocks from now on. I also am wrapping the end of Dallas Season 8 shortly, because I'm hoping to try watching Dallas' famous 'dream season' and KL Season 7 together in sync due to their unique Lorimar creative showrunner swap to compare and contrast. I'm back in my Lorimar era!

I am sure people are tired of my critically hammering Dallas in multiple threads, and I do think it has its merits especially earlier on. I enjoy watching portions of it for what it is even in its later years, but it's a very different beast to me. What I will say though is it's consistently strange how connected I can be to even tiny character moments in Knots - Ben playing post-coital bagpipes for Val in the season finale before the big news comes down while Val giggles and says 'this is getting weird' - which never seem to happen on the mothership show, and how you feel the character history weight and stakes for every person involved. There's such care taken too with the cutting and production value, like the cross-cutting in the opening, ricocheting back and forth between a shellshocked Karen struggling to talk to the police after Ackerman's blown his brains out, to Mack finally fully committing himself to his wife's faith in her beliefs as he illegally ransacks Ackerman's house for his files. And the big, famous tableaus like the end sequence at the Fishers has all the characters arrayed across the screen and location shoot like they're in a Western, just splayed across a suburban street. I just never see stuff like this on Dallas much, character-wise or style-wise. It's not a wonder to me that KL ran fourteen years at this point; the wonder is how it seemingly (by comparison to Dallas at least which was understandably larger than life and tapped into the zeitgeist) flew relatively under the cultural radar at the same time.

@Vee Looking forward to your thoughts on the final 10 episodes of season 6. Those episodes to me were the peak of Knots Landing: Ava Gardner arc, the start of Empire Valley, Val's babies.

I was somewhere in those 10 eps when I left off - I'll have to check my notes. I will say I was surprised they simply concluded the Ruth arc off-camera. In between the penultimate episode and the finale Greg finds out what Ruth did with Abby to con Laura into thinking Abby and Greg had slept together again (a Melrose Place-esque or late Dallas-level scheme that seems beneath KL tbh) and sends Ruth packing without a final scene, all offscreen. Presumably because Ava Gardner's contracted run was up and maybe she was too run ragged by the network TV filming pace to even be bothered with more. There's also no Joshua or Cathy in "The Long and Winding Road" which feels appropriate, if a bit surprising given that story ticking up and up.

I sure will, he's great! He and I were having a conversation about KL's infamous sandcastle opening (he hates it, I love it as a fun experiment a long-running show like Knots is fortunate enough to try). I found myself on the beach at Magens Bay last week and I wrote out the KL logo for him in the sand, he posted it in his stories.

@j swift @Soapsuds I can't believe you're so thirsty for Gary.

The Gary/Val/Abby triangle was pivotal in ushering in Knots Landing's peak era and drove storylines for years. I never thought Gary was a prize though. When the triangle was beginning I was like "why are these grown women fighting over this weak mama's boy?". The triangle worked not because of the triangle itself, but for the character arcs: Gary manned up, Val moved on with her life after losing her first love, and Abby got the come up that she was all about.

    • Not to hijack the thread, but was that character Justine? I just found this interview online with Logan and see what you're talking about - wow!   http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/chat85.html

    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).
