It's ok, he's still learning. This is his first HW position, right?

He came from AW under Lemay, who certainly wasn't known for fast-paced stories.

Wish I could get Retro - these are the episodes I started watching originally, and I loved the Ann Larimer/Carolee story.

I was eagerly awaiting Marland's run. But i've been sorely disappointed. At least Mr. Marland learned from his mistakes.  Sadly on The Doctors expense.  And went on to have an amazing career. I can't imagine watching this in real time. I grew too like both Stacy & Paul. They were a fascinating yet dysfunctional duo. The whole story besides being dragged ends in a whimper.  All the juicy soapy drama from the fall out was nonexistent.

I liked Paul/Stacy better when Depriest was writing because there were so many layers and dysfunction with that coupling.  Stacy's craving a father figure (which fit Paul)... and Paul remarking that Stacy reminded him so much of his late wife (who died from suicide).  Depriest set up layers of psychological elements with that coupling where I wondered if Paul truly cared about Stacy, or if he just using her to further his own vendetta/agenda against Matt.  I always wondered that while watching him with Stacy while Marland kind of spelled it out for us including making it seem like they were in love (with them being sappy with the baby coming, etc).

The other thing I noticed about Marland was that the interesting push and pull between Paul/Ann (so fascinating and hilarious with their one liners) was deluted/watered down the moment he and his script writers came into the picture.

And watching how he's totally watered down Penny to the point where she's a Stepford Wife.. it's no wonder Julia Duffy bailed...I would have at the end of my contract as well if I were in her shoes.  The Pollacks, Cenedella, and Depriest wrote some good content/material for Penny.. but since Marland took over.. she's become window dressing and become a Stepford wife.. and oh how he's watered down MJ as well.

I think Marland wasn't the right fit for the show.  The Doctors needed writers that wrote plot and heavy emotion.. over repression and restraint.  That was why Cenedella also struggled when he had the helm, too.

Thanks, someone else on here explained how to find it. So the weekend showings are marathons like SoapNet used to do? It looked like they were airing 9 hours a week, which would be a pretty big commitment, even with the commercials taken out.

Now I can't decide if I just want to pick up from this week, or to go back as far as possible (late 1967). Retro has already aired more episodes of TD than there are in the entirety of DARK SHADOWS, and the idea of being able to watch every episode as opposed to the spotty YT availability of every other soap is an intriguing one!

The weekend showings are from the past, and not at the same time frame either. At one point, they were showing twelve "new" episodes of The Doctors a week (Mon-Sat). There are some episodes that are missing, which is a disappointment, but I agree about the whole intriguing seeing years of a show thing. Also with the compressed time frame I think there are certain things one can see that the viewers back in the day wouldn't have noticed.

Oh Matt and Maggie. It breaks my heart to see their marriage crumble into nothingness all b/c they 2 clearly don't know how to communicate with each other. Lydia Bruce really impressed me the last round of episodes from her reaction to Nola answering the phone (and assuming the worst), to being a vulnerable, hot mess in the arms of Kyle.

Also, haven't the actor that plays Kyle been on another soap? I feel like I've seen him before in classic soap clips around here.

I knew I recognized him. I remember now that the clip I saw of him was with Sunny and I think Stu's daughter, Janet outside a courtroom.

That aside, I am eager to know what your opinion (and many others-- @Vee @DRW50 @Mitch) opinion on the episodes about Stacey's death and Ann's impending doom. While Marland wasn't as strong as he was years later on World Turns, I still find this show to be endearing.

Also, I'm impartial to the new Doctors theme now. It's OK, but I prefer to grand, orchestral previous theme.

    • I think even if Marland had wanted to write more for Sara/Adam, his hands would have been tied as Robert Milli was one of the actors dumped by P&G due to his age.  From the bits and pieces I've seen of that period, Sara does have a key role in the Carrie plot, and Marland briefly gave her son Tim a more important part. I'm not sure if they just gave up on Tim once Kevin Bacon left or if they never really cared. I did not even know for many years that there was an actor in the part after Kevin...and then not one, but two. The Spauldingfield video on Tim doesn't even show the last actor (Nigel Reed), which kind of says it all. Anyway, I do get the sense Marland has some use for Sara, or for Millette. It's only after he goes that she is dumped. Of course he didn't ever hire her for his other shows, so maybe I'm wrong. (then again he never hired Geraldine Court either and he seemed very fond of her) Ann is an odd character to me as she is a proto-Lillian in being defined by pining for a Bauer brother and being involved in the death of one of their wives. I do wonder what else they could have done with her. She was friends with Diane, wasn't she? They could have had Diane manipulate her against Mike, I suppose.
    • Yassss....come on Maurice and Brandon...give us nothing!!! Wow, their need to develop their craft shone like a blinding light this episode. Brandon in his Martin and Smitty scenes sounded like he was reading and the facial expressions were giving Disney Channel. He did much better against Maurice in the Martin v Ted scenes. Now, Teddd-dyy (Dana's voice) was just flat. I watched the episode just now after reading the comment on here that Maurice needs to stop swaying, and now I can't unsee it. Has it really been this bad all along?  Ambyr carries. I don't need to say anymore. I am kind of excited to see this Kat/Tomas/Eva stuff play out.  Bill is such a dick to Dani. Like that's the mother of your children that you cheated on with your daughter's best friend but you look to take those low blows. Lord! When he said that thing about it being obvious he didn't care about Dani anymore since he was the one that walked out...that was cold. I even felt for Dani. Bill definitely is all over the spectrum. You can see a villain possibly surfacing, but you also see this great father. The elder Duprees move a little funny. I'm wondering what that is all about. Are they just overly protective matriarch and patriarch because they think it's what's best for their family, or are they afraid their secrets will come out or there's something more sinister there. Why would Vernon want to keep that information from Martin?  I hope something interesting comes out of this June stuff, but as of right now, I'm not too invested. It's not helping my interest on Naomi or Jacob either. However, tge actress playing Naomi has comes a long way from day one.
    • None of the males are taking their shirts off every week, so we know they have some degree of acting skill.
    • Here's what happened on the sophomore slaughterer, rookie breakout, new hotness, and three soaps that week. The Cosby Show - Off to the Races (May 8): Cliff is determined to settle a score with a former track rival. The Golden Girls - The Way We Met (season 1 finale, May 10): Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche reminisce about how they all came to live together. Miami Vice - Sons and Lovers (season 2 finale, May 9): Angelyne warns former lover Tubbs of a bounty put on his head by the son of dead drug-kingpin Calderone. Dallas - Hello...Goodbye...Hello (May 9): An enemy stalks J.R.. Aunt Lil testifies for Ray at the adoption hearing. Sue Ellen tells John Ross that she and J.R. are reconciling. Falcon Crest - Consumed (May 9): Jeff imprisons Maggie. Angela pursues elopers Dwayne and Emma. Chase traps Terry into revealing Richard's link with Miss Jones. Knots Landing - Thicker than Water (May 8): Karen and Abby feud over Lotus Point. Greg and Abby urge Peter to enter politics. Ben packs for Cathy's tour. Mack meets his daughter.
    • What can I say?  I did my best.
    • Thank you for sharing. I guess Nancy was catatonic most of her time on the show, so I guess the gasps make sense, lol. I had heard Cathy and Dick DeCoit were supposed to be on the show longer, but Trish Stewart leaving changed all that.
    • @Rmodelboy Thanks for posting that On-set pic of June. She looks great, you just might be right about her being Hayley sibling.

    • Claybon said Samantha and Tyrell were initially 6 and 7, but aged up for technical reasons, first aged up to 10 or 11, and then finally to 16 and 17. Is that the first time soap children have been SORASed twice before ever airing?
