I agree the first few years really do have the feel of a BBC drama which is what I like so much about it.  It's very earthy and authentic.

I liked Rene and nick, i prefer the drug dealing/slum landlord slant to mob activity vs the more overblown murder and henchmen vibe they went with later on.

Mary Page Keller - Ryan's Hope Promos from 1982 - the Original Amanda Kirkland. It is a shame that SoapNet refused to air reruns of Ryan's Hope during Mary Page Keller time on the show. It would've been interesting to see her work

Episode 1000 and...

- Johnny is playing with family money because he wants to be as rich as Delia. Boring.

- Maeve can't stand Siobahn.

- Edmund just died and the Ryans could not have cared less.

- Frank has been bought by Rae. I cannot understand whether I should view Rae as a Lucinda Walsh or an Erica Kane type. DHK is good as Frank, but the character is a mess. BTW he had the Luke perm before Luke Spencer.

- John Blazo's Pat has really grown on me. No chemistry with Faith, but neither did Malcom Groome with any of the Faiths. I will really miss him when he leaves.

- A fourth Mary, who now works for Thatcher Ross (played by Patrick Horgan). I like the actress, but no real chemistry with Jack.

- Siobahn is my favorite character. The scenes with Jack were great. TPTB were crazy to let her go.

- Delia has been recast. She is no longer the villain. just a ditzy blonde from "Victor-Victoria". I blame the writing. Ilene Kristen was such a  unique presence, the show is emptier without her.

- Jillian is crying, I am not watching her scenes. How could they kill a baby? Horrible story.

- A very soapy story with a blind Tom, a clueless Faith and a young nurse who is trouble.

Ryan's Hope is officially another soap opera. A very good one,I wouldn't dream of leaving the show. I am still watching, I love the bar, HG is a magnificent actress, her Maeve is amazing, I adore Roger and Johnny is always a lot fun, no other soap has a Kevin, but... It is no longer a 10. It is an 8. Ok, 8 1/2 . I still care.

This was probably put up at some point given the 7 years but I didn't remember seeing it so I will post it.

I am watching January 1980 episodes at this point.

Mary has died and I think that it was a big mistake. Nicolette Goulet was fine in the role (she reminded me of a young Joan Crawford in some scenes), losing Mary gave the show a rather dark vibe. Everyone was amazing in her death scenes though.

Kim has arrived and she is eating the show. The story with Seneca is disturbing, disgusting and creepy. It is taking way too much time from the people we care for. Making her Jack's daughter would cause drama for him and Mary and there would be a point in watching her all the time.

We have already met Prince Albert. Oh God.

Seneca and Roger were having drinks and discussing Woody Allen's movie Manhattan. Roger mentioned that it featured an older man getting involved with a teenager. I thought it was very interesting.

A shooting in the bar. That's where Claire Labine got the idea for the Bauer kitchen shooting.

So far Ryan's Hope is the most fascinating soap I have ever watched. Even with its small (or big mistakes).

One of the things Claire Labine said, back then, was that she didn't know how to write for a married couple. But that certainly would have been a big complication for Jack and Mary if Jack had a daughter like Kim. I always thought that if Alex McLean's daughter Sandy would have come to town and she would create problems for Alex and Mary.

Huh?

And she was writing a soap? Maybe she meant she found it hard to come up with stories for a happily married couple, which is a common soap writers lament.

Bill Bell said the same thing about Chris/Snapper on Y&R.

That's why before they decide to marry off a couple they need to have the next story/complication in mind and lay the groundwork.

I'd like to see that quote because it doesn't seem to fit with the facts of the events.  There was plenty of conflict for Jack and Mary to be derived from Johnny's opposition to Jack, to Mary's internal discord about falling into traditional female roles within a marriage.  Also, there were several couples throughout Labine's writing that maintained front burner status despite their marital status.  So, even if it could be verified that she said it, it wasn't actually true.

Note: I am not intending to disrespect your memory of the statement, I've just never read it in her interviews or the oral history of the soap.

    • I guess it depends on your device.  I can watch CW shows via their website on my Windows PC.
    • Ooooo A Liam episode? I'll watch it later today. They sure are churning the daily episodes out early.

    • Welcome back, Shawn Douglas! It's been a while. It really is too bad that the writers don't really have an interest in the character because there are still a lot of ways that he can be used effectively on the canvas. He should have been a part of the 60th anniversary celebrations as well. If anything, just to represent Bo and Hope. And I'd much rather see Jada paired with him than possibly with Theo. But I enjoyed him getting caught up with Belle, and comforting her. I'm sure they'll find their way back to each other at some point but I do like them as divorced friends. I just hope we see it play out onscreen. Belle being a dick about Sami again was unnecessary though. And we finally saw Liam again!  I'm curious to see how this storyline is going to play out, and who's going to be weaved into it. He and Abe do work well together too. And we learned that he has a kid. Hopefully, we'll learn more about his character in the future. But I'm not really sure about Johnny and Chanel suddenly having problems with raising Trey. They've wanted a baby for so long, so I don't understand why this is even an issue. They should know by now what it's like to raise a baby. But I did enjoy Johnny's scenes with EJ, and that Johnny still hasn't refused to forgive him. This storyline was/is very clunky, but having the two of them be at odds is the right decision. There's so much story potential that can be drawn from that. As for Chad... there was no time for us to see his reunion with Will, but there's time for us to see him talking BS with Leo? I don't get it. And I don't get all this random dating app stuff either. Leo and Javi were boring af too. If we're forced to endure them, can they at least have some real conflict? The two of them losing the baby was the perfect opportunity for it.

    • I enjoy BF better on Days than on YR.   Chad is greater than Cane, in my opinion.
    • Ick! Seeing MS and BF making out as the characters onscreen was just ewwww.
