Sad news, suds fans. Longtime TV serial writer Anne Howard Bailey died Friday of congestive heart failure in Rancho Mirage, Calif., per the Los Angeles Times. She was 82.

Back in the '80s, Bailey served as head writer of Santa Barbara, Days of our Lives and General Hospital. In fact, her team of SB scribes won the Daytime Emmy for outstanding drama series writing in 1989.

Also of note, Bailey created NBC's short-lived feminist sudser How to Survive a Marriage in 1974. Funny thing is, Bailey herself never married; she felt living solo was a key ingredient to her success as a writer.
