How would you rate the soaps you watched over the summer (June-August)

AMC: C-

This show has been an absolute mess. Nothing seems to make sense and its nothing but contrived nonsense. It actually started off better but got progressively worse as the weeks went on. Throwing useless newbies like Colby, Sydney, Jamal and Sean did not make matters any better. Of course the utter lack of using the vets has also contributed to the show's poor condition

GH - D

Worse show of the summer. Got so bad that I actually had to drop it. Way too much Sonny and Carly in the beginning. The only reason Im not giving this an F is bc of the drama in the past few weeks, mainly Lulu's pregnancy.

OLTL: D+

Way too much of John's father mystery. Adriana stalker story dragged and has been a complete bust. I actually dont even feel like discussing it. It was better than GH, yet slightly worse than AMC.

Y&R: B-

This is the only soap I have really enjoyed. Overall I think its pretty good but not as good as it should be. Alot of stuff just happens too fast and characters are being misused and wasted. Ex. Katherine, Jill, Druscilla...etc. Still the show managed to keep me interested and entertained over the summer.

Those are the only soaps I watched on a continual basis (well enough of GH). Based on the little bits I saw, I'd give B&B a C-. While the Darla death story was good and gave Thorne and Taylor a story, Brooke/Ridge/Nick continued to dominate. Adding Donna Logan as Brooke JR only made things worse and the Felicia/Dante/Bridget triangle makes little sense and is turning into a repeat of Brooke/Ridge/Taylor

Not a good summer for soaps this year

As The World Turns: B-

Mixed bag, liked the Slasher stuff but it did drag. Nice to see ED doing something.

The Young and the Restless: B+

Not a teen dominated summer, but it's been good, and the acting has been top notch. More balance though.

General Hospital: C+

NLG, without her I wouldn't be watching this b.s.

ATWT: I don't know what it was...but I lost interest in the show back in May. I don't know if it's the writing or what...but the show just seems to be missing something. Eve with Damian, Lucy, and Simon all returning...even those characters couldn't save it from a....... B-

GL: Just because of Reva's continued stupidity in not telling her family that she has cancer, I'm giving it a C

DAYS: I didn't watch as much as I should have but after Alex North, Sami/Austin and Lucas/Carrie: The Sequel, Chelsea not learning anything, and The Gloved Hand...I could only stomach to give it a D

  • Member

I have only watched 2 shows for any great length of time since May.

ATWT - I give an A- because of mostly Luke's story (even though Damian's return did nothing for it) and the Slasher story which I very much loved.

Days - I quit watching in the latter part of June and did pick back up until August, but what I have seen has been good. I give it a B+ - mostly for the exciting return of Jack at the wedding. And then for the Sami and EJ pairing, and the end of Sami and Austin this week.

ATWT: A

Great summer, To bad the ratings don't reflect the quality of the show.

PSNS: B+

Vendetta was a flop for the most part, but it's picked up steam and has been great for the past month.

DAYS: B

Much better now than early summer, still has a few things left to iron out, but it's improved 10 fold.

GL: B-

I recently started watching again after a few year hiatus, and I surprisingly entertained.

AMC: F-

I keep holding out hope that the once great All my Children will return to it's roots, but it's in the worst state I have ever seen it. It's lost it's identity, and it's history. The newbies have litterally taken over and there's no change in sight. McT you have super talented Vets, Use them you nit!!!

GH/B&B/OLTL: Haven't watched at all this summer. Can't stomach then anymore.

  • Member

I am going to make this as short and sweet as possible as I watched all 9 enough all summer (I watch Y&R, Days, ATWT, and Passions the most) to be able to give them all a grade.

AMC-Terrible from the stupid new shaky camera style to the horrible stories. Too many newbies and not enough of Julia Barr and all the vets. I give it a F

ATWT-Pretty good. It got draggy at times during the slasher story but I liked the use of ED and Jennifer's death was great. I also liked the Luke story so I will give the show a B+

B&B-Crap. The Felicia/Dante/Bridget thing is boring, the Darla story was nothing but a lame gimmick and a terrible way to write off a beloved character, I could give a rat's ass about Hector, and I don't care for Ridge/Donna even though Jennifer Gareis is pretty good. The show get's a D for me and that is being nice.

Days: Awesome. From Jack's return and the return of Steve/Kayla to the intriguing mystery of the gloved hand. The Shawn/Belle/Mimi/Philip story was much better and these last few weeks under Beth Milstein (especially the last two weeks) have been amazing. The end to Sami/Austin has been fantastic-the show deserves a B alone for what happened before the last two weeks but these past two weeks jump it to a A for me (can't give it a A+ because it started off bad in May but got good when Steve and Kayla returned).

GH: I will just sum it up by saying utter crap. I don't even care to discuss it anymore. Julie Berman and Nance Lee Grahn are the only highlights for me. The Lulu story I don't even care for but Berman has rocked it despite some shoddy writing. The vets are still treated like crap and the show goes from one lame gimmick to the next. The show gets an F- for me.

GL: Pretty good. Reva's cancer isn't the best story in the world but I like them giving her a meaty story and I like her and Billy. Josh/Cassie is actually interesting for me. They had a nice summer, not a great one, just nice. I give it a B .

OLTL: Like the other ABC soaps, the show is crap. The vets are treated like crap while characters like John Mcbain are allowed to be on every day. Now DG and HT are leaving after being totally wasted. Todd's execution was nothing more then a knockoff of Sami's execution on Days and if that gets an emmy nod when the Days execution didn't (despite it winning a writer's guild award for that story) I will be royall pissed. The show gets a F .

Passions-Much improved. The summer started out like crap in may and then began to show signs of life in June with the end to Vendetta. July and August were very good with the highlight being Theresa giving Ethan up (emmy material for Lindsey Hartley). Did not care for the Siren story and I hate the lack of use of the vets but Jaresa and Lucy are promising and the show has improved so it gets a B- for me.

Y&R: Overrated if you ask me. LML started out so promising but very little appeals to me now. John's death was amazing and I have liked Victor's epilepsy (waiting for him to return to his old self now though as I am bored with it) but everything else is meh. The Brad story flat out stunk, I hate Gloria, they are wasting Greg Rikarrt, the Phyllis/Nick/Sharon story was good but now is boring as Phyllis is becoming way too matron-like, and Jill and Katherine are being wasted along with Ashley (Eileen deserves better). It is still better then most shows but is not as good as it was earlier this year. The show gets a B- for me (without John's death it gets a C)

ATWT: B

-Paul/Em/Meg triangle from hell has to end. Miscarry Emily's spawn ASAP.

-Not enjoying the return of Lusty 2.0

-Fun, yet totally disposable Slasher storyline

-A new Coleman! :)

-I was interested in Carly working with Simon, but that's been turned into a stupid love relationship of sorts.

-Matie are still on this show. <_<

GH: C

-Sam, STFU.

-I love Liz and Jason hooking up.

-Love AddictedLucky (hate the Maxie aspect though)

-All things Alexis save the show from an F.

DAYS: B-

-Stories are moving but I'm not intrigued to watch.

-It's OK; nothing to write home about.

Wow- A great summer for some, and a horrific for others. Here's my response..

1) Days- My favorite all time soap deserved a D this spring, but I think it gets an A for the summer. The gloved hand is getting old, but Hogan is going to work that out quick. Everything from the dialouge to the camera angles has improved. These last three weeks have kept me watching everyday, and I haven't been able to say that about a soap since the mid ninties.

2) ATWT- Always a credible soap, ATWT did it again this summer. I love this show, it is truely a class act. The slasher storyline wasn't the best moment in the shows history, but compared to the garbage on other soaps, it seemed to shine. I give it a B+

3) GL- Wow, it can do a lot with a little. I really root for this soap, and hope it can hang on. I haven't watched a lot this summer, but I do think, from the little I've seen, that it deserves a B. Zimmer always shines, and has done it again with the cancer storyline. This show has proven a low budget doesn't mean poor quality.

4) Passions- It's been better, but it still entertains me. No one expects to think "oh, how relevant" when watching this show, but you do expect to have a good time. I think the show has been better, and the vendetta just fell flat, but hell, it's Passions, and you can't call a show bad thats never tried to be critically acclaimed. I give it a C+

5) Y&R - Am I the only one that falls asleep for this one? I think it's good, don't get me wrong. I think it will rack up Emmy's this year, no doubt about it. However, can't they just try to make it a little more cutting edge? I did love the death of John, even if I think it may have been stupid to write off a patriarch in such a final way. I'm finding Phylis annoying, and Sharon just not at all watchable. Latham is a good writer though, so I tie it with Passions with a C+.

6) B&B - Use to be my favorite soap. It was a true camp fest with a traditonal soap flair. I LOVED watching B&B about a year ago, but now it's like a broken record playing the same tune over an over. Stop the madness, before I flunk you. It gets a C.

7) ALL ABC SOAPS - I watch them all, and I use to be torn between AMC and Days when Reilly was tearing apart Salem around a year ago. Now, I can't stand the damn show. OLTL is hideous under Hackley. It's like watching a bad porn without the nudity to entertain me. GH is a show that wants to be "The Sopranos", but just can't because it's suppose to be "General Hospital", a show about adventure, supercouples, family, and mystery. I never thought I'd say it, but take a cue from Ken Corday, a start focusing on what your shows meant before you tried to turn them into trash. If not, you may find yourselves in a very bad spot this time next year. I give them all an F.

So there it goes. You may disagree, but I think I've been fair.

DAYS- I have only watched bits and pieces. On the positive side, the Jack/Steve return was exciting to watch and not dragged out too much. The scenes with with Abe busting Lexie/Tek were awesome. Sami ending things with Austin was great also. Steve & Kayla have been spared any destruction, although at the expense of diminshed airtime. There has been alot more character driven interaction under Milstein, better dialogue and a quicker pace (though still not quick enough IMO). Characters also seem to be escaping the vacuums they've been stuck in and are mixing with different people.

On the negative side, there is far too much focus on the two quads from doom. Couldn't give a crap about Max/Stephanie/Chelsea. The MGH is lame, stupid and typical Reilly. There is too much pimping of EJ. And Jack & Jennifer should have been on more in the lead-up to their departure.

Overall rating: B-

I agree, Cheap. I have been disappointed by "my" soaps all summer and, in fact, haven't watched ANY in more than two weeks. Part of that was vacation, but when I came back, I found I had no desire to catch up on everything that had happened.

IMO, Y&R is still far and away the best soap in terms of quality, but I found it lacklustre and have little desire to even set the VCR for it. I think LML is still getting a handle on certain characters, and that's why we haven't seen Dru or Phyllis, Ashley or Nikki in all their full glory. Plus John's death -- which seems to me to be reworking the Cassie Shocking Death formula for the second consecutive year -- IMHO, didn't need to happen. Health reasons get John a repreive and released from jail. End of story.

Rating: B-

GH:

-Too much Cujo-Carly propping.

-Too much EMILY. Get her the [!@#$%^&*] off my screen!

-Alexis, Sam and Rick near-destroyed as characters. I did sorta enjoy the actual Sleaze though. :P

-The canvas IS opening up a little more to include characters outside the Fab Four, although a lot of the writing is SO bad and great characters (VETS!!) are SO wasted that it really doesn't matter how many beloved characters are included in current SLs.

Rating: D and GH dropped from my TiVO schedule.

B&B:

SO awful, it hardly bears comment.

For a HW and EP with such unprecedented power on his soap and so many years working on B&B, it is downright extraordinary how Brad Bell can "write" his characters with so little depth and understanding of what makes them tick. The show is ALL plot. And BAD plot at that.

Thus proving to me what a shiteous writer Brad Bell is and has always been.

Verdict: Buh-bye B&B and a big, fat F.

OLTL:

The so-called HW is badly wasting amazing potential on this show and ignoring her audience in order to please one person: Frons. The firing of DG is the straw that broke the camel's back, IMO. I love the actors on this show and the history that I have been discovering bit by bit but, after reading this EXCELLENT article on OLTL (see http://www.soaptownusa.com/lv.html for a critique of how the show IS and just how brilliant it COULD be), I realize that potential is not good enough. Especially when it is being so needlessly (purposely?) squandered.

Rating: C-... eh, ok, a D.

Days:

Approaching the greatness of 15 years ago, IMO. And it looks likely to get even better. Unfortunately, I am SO burnt out by soaps right now that I just cannot bring myself to catch the show at the moment. :(

Rating: B+ to A- ... if I were watching.

  • Member

AMC gets an F. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. Except maybe when the men take the shirts off. Get rid of the newbies and let the actors act.

ATWT. B. Slasher story is starting to drag and I love the Luke/Damian story.

B&B: D: Killing Darla was just horrible

DAYS: A: Started out slow, but since the introduction of Steve and Kayla and Sami dumping Austin, its earned its A.

GH: C and this was the hardest one. Scrubs is good, Lulu's pregnancy is good, Anna and Robert are awesome and that is about it. Ric, Sam, Sonny, Alexis are killing the soap

  • Member

AMC- I just don't know. This show has really gone to hell so quick. The newbies are God awful and the writing is even worse. From Erica now not having an abortion to all that other crap they show everyday, I have to give them a big fat F .

Days- I just started watching 6 months ago. I like what has happened recently. I loved Sami leaving Austin at the altar and I loved Abe catching Lexie and Tek. I'm glad the new HW is not gonna drag this gloved hand s/l line out much longer, I have to give them a B-.

GH- I'm glad they put Soily to rest because that was toooooo painful to watch. I hate "The Sonny Hour" co-starring Jason, Carly and Sam. They some how work their way into every s/l. The Lulu pregnacy s/l and Alexis' cancer s/l is the only thing that keeps me remotely intrested. They get a D.

OLTL- So sick of Todd, Blair and Spencer. I'm mad as all hell they are letting DG go, therefore HT is not resigning. Stop pimping John Mclame and give Vicki a real story, they get a F.

Y&R- This is my all-time favorite soap, but it's starting to fall apart. I love Nick and Phyllis, but I want the real Phyllis back. Who is this Stepford clone that's impersonating Phyllis? Glad to see a little glimps of TGVN because that whimpy and crying Victor had to go. I love the Abbott/Fisher war. It keeps me laughing daily. I'll give them a B just because they stay true to the history of their show the most.
