Y&R: October 2024 Discussion Thread
I have a love/hate relationship with the show featuring Jess Walton via Zoom. On the one hand, I love seeing her, and this is a novel way to do it. On the other hand, I hate that the show couldn't be bothered to send her a Jill Abbott suit and insist that she hot roll her hair. I can clearly see that she is filming in a corner of her home office with the beauty of Oregon reflected in the glass of a picture frame.

I look forward to seeing that set because those angles look quite similar to the original ranch set.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
Gizelle really blew it in episode 2 and it appears that Ashley joins her in really blowing it in episode 3. They could have played it graciously and then Karen would have looked like the insensitive one...but no, their true motivations could not be held back and Gizelle and Ashley came off horribly. Karen inviting all of them to an event honouring her the same night as Gizelle's event? Tacky, and something Karen has done in the past. However, Karen advised that there would be transportation so the women could attend both events. Classy, and when they told her they were leaving her event around 7:30pm, she was nothing but nice about it. Gizelle showed her ass, yet again, by throwing out Stacey and Mia and the others. This GNA wellness farce (they only have 5 pieces of white labelled merch on the site) being combined with an event to raise funds for brain tumour research was clearly only about Gizelle lapping up praise. Ashley really looked like an idiot given she told the women to be there by 8pm, which they complied with. She was only too happy to throw those women under the bus when Gizelle started moaning that they were rude. For Ashley to say "it is 8:04" and then bring down the donation QR code? Bitch, please.

Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
To me, it's easy: Natalie Minardi Slater. She was with Y&R since 1991, beginning as a production assistant to rise to breakdown writer and script editor before Griffith axed her. She is young enough than most of the HW crop out there and is worth a try.

Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
Note what Ed Scott says himself in that interview with Michael Fairman. He says he was "Bill Bell's Top Gun in the studio" - aka he was Bill Bell's enforcer. That role is needed on a set and on a show like Y&R that's got a lot of personalities. He's spent his career in the booth communicating with the actors and driving the production and he's extremely good at it. That doesn't mean that Ed Scott didn't and doesn't play favourites. It's human nature to do so. However, my observation is he really boosted talented people and did what he could to muffle nonsense and diva behaviour, blind, of course, to his own wife. In Jeanne's book, she was not critical of Ed. She pointed out that MTS got weird for years with her and would not speak to her off the set, for no reason as far as Jeanne knew. He wanted Brenda Dickson out because she was a complete pain in the ass and the producers knew they had a far more talented replacement available in Jess Walton.

This can only be good news for the show. Griffith has failed. He needs to go.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
POTOMAC Great start to the season. While I miss Candiace's witty remarks, I know the show could not go on with her given producers continue to want to employ Gizelle and her absence was not really felt. Robyn has been a non-entity for years so I didn't notice her absence in the slightest. Ashley and Wendy are trotting out the same tired storylines they've been relying on for years. Nobody cares anymore about Demon Darby (copyright Danny Pellegrino) and Wendy's fake jobs/businesses that she does for the show just don't work for me. I don't concur with @Gray Bunny (and we're usually always in sync) about Ashley's look: I thought her wigs looked tragic and her breast implants a bit wonky. The new girls have promise...though I think Stacy is going to end up showing her ass trying to be Karen 2.0. There is only one Grande Dame. Speaking of which, I will be very interested to see how Karen's DUI pans out because she is dealing with it in a very different way than OC's Shannon has. I liked the scenes with Karen and Gizelle because they have an easy 'frenemy' chemistry where their disputes do not run deep. OC Speaking of which, Shannon went into this season in probably the worst position she could have imagined...yet Tamra's constant attacks on Shannon have spectacularly backfired and Shannon's ownership of her DUI and general misery makes her wholly sympathetic. Tamra is just too mean and too spiteful. It's a good thing she's gotten a recent facelift because Tamra was starting to get the face she deserves. Her upper arms...on the other hand...show what she's trying to hide. Katie and Jen are both great additions, though I think with Katie she'll have a rough season 2 because all the discussion around her custody matters hint there's lots of negativity lurking beneath. Jen can date an FBI informant all she likes: she is not backing down to Tamra and said it this past week that Tamra is loyal to no one but herself. Emily and Heather's confrontation wasn't a good look for anyone. Emily needs to move past her fixation on how other people look at her while Heather's comment about the dress she put Emily in being "tight" highlights that Heather can be cutting and mean. I enjoy the Gina storyline because she represents that part of OC that Lauri Peterson originated: down on your luck, rebuilding, living in cramped quarters, trying to make it work. Alexis is a loser and I hope that this season will be the last we see of her and Johnny J. Shannon has set clear boundaries and protected her sanity and it's made Alexis furious as she realizes she's been easily outmaneuvered. Good. SLC Really enjoying it this year. Bronwyn came in guns blazing. She dresses like a clown. Claims to be 38 when she looks about 51. Mary's return is welcome. Of course, I don't forget that she appeared to be a cult leader happy to soak her congregation for all they're worth, and her parenting is abysmal given what's going on with her son, but she's clearly enjoying this season more. Plus, Britani irritates her to no end, which is amusing to watch. Whitney and her 'hilling journey' is going to continue to have a bad season and she deserves it. Last episode's reveal that her Prism jewelry is just overpriced junk from Alibaba is such a bad look. Meredith has nuked her with that one. Heather does not have much of a storyline this season from the looks of things, so it'll be interesting to see if she can pull anything together later on. The same applies to Meredith and to Lisa as well - what exactly are any of them doing other than interacting? That said, they have organic chemistry and I enjoy watching them, so perhaps it doesn't matter. Britani and that troublesome Osmond is both sympathetic and pathetic at the same time.

DAYS: R.I.P. Drake Hogestyn (John Black, Days of our Lives)
What a shocking loss. My jaw dropped when I saw an acquaintance post the news on social media. He never phoned it in and committed to the role. He had a sense of humour and the audience loved him for it. What a terrible loss for DAYS and all who loved him.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
Heather played it all wrong when it came to Emily and her emotional response about the clothes when, in the Talking Head Interview, she said the dress was "tight" on Emily. Emily was not really blaming Heather. She was having a 'relatable moment' about her body and how she was feeling. Alexis, idiot that she is, didn't realize Emily was giving her a compliment and putting herself down when she said it was tough being in the same dress as size 2 Alexis. Tamra is super awful and she miscalculated the audience's reaction to Shannon and her DUI. She thought she would go hard on Shannon and be respected for it...but Tamra just comes across as an evil bitch who is wholly disingenuous. Shannon, on the other hand, has let it all hang out, yet again, and the audience will always root for that. Jenn Pedranti is like an original OC housewife - financially a mess, incapable of being an adult, and struggling to parent children. Now that she's also got a boyfriend cooperating with the FBI, she's going to reach icon status.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
I agree, the premiere was great and SLC has started off strong. I don't like the new housewife, Bronwyn, because she's trying very hard, her 'fashion' is the Chanel Ayan stupidity that I can't stand, and she's looking rough for 38. I do like the new friend, Britani, because of that Osmond connection. Plus, she irritated Mary and that was hilarious. Whitney has had this coming for years. She is a huge liar and it was refreshing to see Heather, Lisa, and Meredith just go hard on her. She deserves it.

Murder, She Wrote
There is only one Grady episode I like and it's Season 6's The Szechuan Dragon which is the sole time Grady is funny and the whole episode is one calamity after the other for him and his (real life and in the show) wife. Lansbury only appears in short telephone calls but somehow her presence is used effectively for comedic effect and is much more useful than the awful 'bookend' episodes.

DAYS: Will classic episodes ever be available?
A couple of years ago, someone on YouTube posted the entirety of the Franco Kelly storyline, concluding with Sami on death row, and then into the Princess Gina years...I watched every episode and was hooked. It's shocking just how good even that era of DAYS was. The only explanation I have is Sony/Corday have some long term plan because it otherwise makes no sense. B&B's reruns on YouTube are fantastic and certainly don't hurt the current show.

Murder, She Wrote
The official party line from Angela was Jean was simply too tired after doing All In The Family and wanted a break from series television after considering the amount of work that would have been involved in an hour long series as lead. The timing of it sounds right and Bea Arthur was a close friend of Angela's so she might have tipped her off about the project. Joan had known Angela from when she first arrived in Hollywood. They infamously did a song and dance number at the Oscars one year with Dana Wynter that flopped hard with all the best actress nominees they were teasing. They also shared a close mutual friend in Robert Wagner.

Murder, She Wrote
Angela was looking to get into series television. Her agents provided her with two pilot options. The first was a sitcom from Norman Lear and the second was Murder, She Wrote. Angela had meetings on both, but quickly decided that Murder, She Wrote, was the project she wanted to do and that the character of Jessica she could do something with. After that, the process was very quick so I don't believe Jean Stapleton went very far. What I do observe is the characterization of Jessica as a dotty New Englander in the first half dozen episodes seemed slanted for Jean, and once those episodes were finished, the writers saw how Angela's natural warmth and intelligence translated onscreen, and the character became what she was for the rest of the run.

ALL: Producers/writers favorite performers.
Bill Bell knew talent. McCook, Storm, Koslow, and Conley - not one false note in the bunch. And Langan knew that if a performer could make it on Y&R, they'd fly at DAYS.

GH: Fan Fave Fired. Actress Blindsided
That's how I feel - I've never understood the appeal. It's a bad time to get the axe given she's a 48 year old woman in Hollywood. But once upon a time, Kelly was the young actress whose arrival unseated one or more middle aged veteran women. Circle of life at ABC Daytime.

B&B: August 2024 Discussion Thread
I think your take is the right one. It has to have been conflict with Brad and her Emmy nomination proving she was right. The weird thing is something had to have changed with him years ago. He worked very well with Susan Flannery for decades and she was no slouch when it came to quality performances. KKL has so many online detractors it seems like that was an easy scapegoat. I’ve just never seen any behaviour from her, ever, to substantiate those kinds of rumours.

B&B: August 2024 Discussion Thread
The internet alleges that Krista Allen getting an Emmy nomination so shortly after joining the show, as a recast no less, created some jealousy behind the scenes with veteran actresses. I'm not so sure how much I believe that. Her exit just seemed so strange. It's like she was too successful with the character and made Taylor too popular.
-
Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
Her intentions look insincere because they are insincere. Tamra doesn't care about anyone except herself. She hates Shannon. Tamra clocks in to create as much conflict as possible because she doesn't want to lose her job again. However, she always fails to realize how toxic she is and how that toxicity cannot last forever.

B&B: How to fix the mess that the show has become?
Another thing: why Brad Bell never got into models and their agents as characters boggles me. He could hire two unknowns as models and Kristian Alfonso as a ruthless modelling agency owner, and you'd have an incredible storyline that could tie in with the Forresters and stand on its own.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
NJ The 'Off the Rails' finale rewatch episode was yet another dud. Nothing was resolved and nothing new was discussed. Teresa remains the Missing Link between the Neanderthals and Mankind. She is too stupid to function and her obsession with Margaret will never end. It really is time to give her a spinoff so her fans can enjoy whatever it is she does...the show cannot move on with her remaining a cast member. Time to reboot and recast the whole thing.
