  1. In hindsight, Bill could have given Leslie and Brad a happy ending and written them both off (considering Tom Hallick departed a little later also) Then have Lorie go full steam with Lance.Vanessa and later Lucas. If he wanted, a recast Leslie could have returned (divorced/widowed) and been tossed into that story.Or maybe, Janice might have agreed to return. If it was a recast it might have been more palatable to have some distance between Lynde's portrayal and the new Leslie. Considering that they were dealing with a new Snapper and a new Greg, just dropping Les for a while could have been a good move.
  2. In 1938, Irna Phillips decided to wrap up her still successful 'Today's Children' and replace it with 'Woman in White' "WOMAN IN WHITE" MAKES ITS BOW AS "TODAY'S CHILDREN" BIDS FAREWELL -.MONDAY Friends of `Today's Children,' for over five and a half years you have been like neighbors to my family and to friends of my family. You have seen these `Today's Children' work out their problems, one by one, problems that sometimes were difficult. But somehow, in some way, these children of mine now seem to be on the right path. They are happy and content, they are grown up and able to face their own problems." With these exact words, "Today's Children's" "Mother Moran" asks a long and faithful audience to listen to "Woman in White." Listeners who tune in "Today's Children" Monday will hear the characters of that serial in their final broadcast, as they become members of the great audience "out there." Following the click of a sound -effects radio - switch, engineers will plug into another studio, introducing "Woman in White," a new daily script show by the same author, Irna Phillips. Everyone who listens and works behind the scenes in radio will wonder why "Today's Children" is being taken off the air when it enjoys top popularity rating among daytime serial programs. The simple, homey words of "Mother Moran" are the answer. The new serial, "Woman in White," which dramatizes the gripping story of a young graduate nurse, "Karen Adams," will serve a real human need, as "Today's Children,' has filled an important broadcasting spot for five years. Playing the title role of "Karen Adams" in "Woman in White," will be talented Actress Luise Barclay; "Betty Adams," a sister of "Karen" and herself a student nurse, will be portrayed by youthful Antonia Gillman; "John Adams," a brother, will be played by Willard Farnum; "Dr. Lee Markham" will be acted by Macdonald Carey, and "Alice Day," nurse, will be portrayed by Ruth Bailey. As the curtain rises on "Woman in White" Monday, tuners -in will hear "Karen Adams" giving her oath and pledge of service at a ceremony being held at a hospital for graduate nurses. Listeners will sympathize with Nurse Adams as she cares for her first case, they'll cheer her service of self as she nurses a middle-aged woman, defeated in her suicide attempt, back to health and adjusts her attitude toward life. Presenting a series of actual cases from which the author bases her script material, "Woman in White" writes finis to Miss Phillips' career as an actress -for she played two important roles in "Today's Children." It also marks the first time in radio that an author and sponsor have invented this novel and effective means of signing off one successful venture to inaugurate a new one. Listeners will have the opportunity of being the critics in this rather revolutionary move.
  3. Thanks! Is Kate Linder headed the way of Doug Davidson?
  4. Thanks for posting that. Yikes, I remember Salvage 1. It seems an odd show for Andy Griffith to be involved with but it seems he really wanted to be back with a weekly series. I think he had another flop 'The Yeagers[ around this time also. It took him a few years to get a hit with Matlock. So what happened with Trish Stewart? Even though Salvage 1 bombed, it would have got her name out there. Joel Higgins fresh off the soaps also, went on to more success. Of course, it was easier for him as most series were built around men. Did Trish actively pursue more work or quickly decide to give up? A few years later she came back yo Y&R, much heavier. Had she been ill or no longer cared trying to be Hollywood slim. So many questions...

  8. Jack and Jamie Ewing - bland characters played by bland actors. This would have been the time to introduce JR's illegitimate son. It would be totally believable that JR had a child. Maybe by Serena(?) one of his go to ladies of the night. That story could have gone so many ways.

  11. The Paley Center Archives has a screen test of Brenda and the following actors, so obviously an audition for the role of Brad. Baker, David L. Cheyne, Hank Diamont, Don Eckholdt, Steven Kayser, Allan J. Wilson, Robert Also a 1974 TV Guide profiles the actors of the NBC series 'Chase'. One of them, Craig Gardener talks about having a semi regular role on Y&R. I suspect this might be Jill's boyfriend who was mentioned in a 1973 synopsis posted way back. I can't recall the character's name offhand.
  12. This goes back to my earlier past of Lucy marrying a businessman, rather than a doctor to keep her character more integral. She could either connive along with him to get JR or be used by him to achieve that aim.
  13. For one horrific moment it appeared we were moving towards a Kandy win. How and why she made it to Top 2 is one of the great mysteries of our time.
  14. The fact that there are plants all over the world... Like when Lauren (for no reason) announced Fenmore's was opening in Japan and Sth Korea (when department stores are shutting down everywhere)Meanwhile she operates her business with no staff or office. Jabot should have been a boutique cosmetics firm, Fenmore's a small chain operating in the midwest, Newman an investment business with a few holdings. The characters could be wealthy but it would be believable that they would be based in GC and the businesses could be depicted somewhat realistically. And threats would seem real. But when its been established that the Newmans are multi billionaires...
  15. The money they were paying Larry and then Patrick, along with escalating salary increases and production costs coupled with falling ratings meant they had to cut people to keep the show financially viable. There was not a lot to be earned in reruns (a gold mine for other shows) and international sales had tapered off. So I guess once contracts came up...
  16. Re Hope recast. Hope was pretty much played out as a lead character (like many others) so if a recast is used to wrap up Hope's story she could either be written out or used as a recurring character.

  19. Check the Ratings from the 70's thread in the Cancelled Soaps section. All this and more is posted there and you should be able to access it for your needs.
  20. The ratings info I have are from a variety of sources, but mostly Daytime TV which published monthly ratings from a few months prior to publication date. They don't detail whether the ratings they show are the monthly average or just the results from one particular week from that month. Nonetheless they give a good guide to how GH was fairing pre Monty/Monty and Marland and then Monty and PFS. By April 77 GH was not in top 10 soaps or top 15 daytime shows AMC, OLTL and RH all outrated GH. AW on NBC and All in the Family/Match Game on CBS were trouncing GH. ABC tried new writers to rev up GH. Nov 77 GH not in top 15 daytime shows ABC hires Doug Marland late 77 and then decides to expand to 60 min and hires Gloria Monty. Jan -Aug 78 GH #6 in soaps 7.2/25 #8 overall. AMC was #1 soap in that time. So over those months show makes a dramatic comeback. Nov 78 #7 7.1/25 Dec 78 #2 8.8/30 Jan 79 #2 9.7/29 Feb 79 #3 10.29 March 79 #5 8.0/27 April 79 #5 8.0/31 May 79 #6 7.9/26 June 79 #5 7.4/28 July 79 #4 9.0/32 Aug 79 #2 10.2/33 Sept 79 #2 8.5/30 Pat Falken Smith too over in August 79.
  21. And if Tessa is dropped there will be a backlash with claims of homophobia.
  22. En So true, but within the confines of once a week for an hour for 30 or so eps a season they were limited in how far they could take the story away from the leads. That was a problem for all the primetime soaps. Agree, Cathy Podewell was great and made it work. Totally different character from Sue Ellen Part of that was that the writers had a limited view of the character. Lucy was the teen vamp in their eyes and never went beyond that which didn't fit as the character aged. I don't know why they married her to Mitch, a doctor? Their story was always islanded and treated as filler. Surely it would have made more sense for Lucy to hook up with a businessman involved in the oil business. That would keep her in the thick of things. Charlene and Larry had great chemistry. I guess they decided to go in a different direction as Barbara was irreplaceable but it was a bone headed move. I always wondered how Hope Lange would have worked as Ellie Giving JR a son was a smart move but several seasons too late. Having Sue Ellen move into the lingerie business was amusing but ultimately led nowhere. Again she should have been involved with something that kept her within the Ewing circle. Giving JR a son was a good move but several seasons too late.
  23. I guess P&G and NBC both wanted AW to succeed, and at that point it was still struggling. Remember in those days P&G had a policy that none of its sponsored shows could compete with one another so there was no issue there. I think Agnes Nixon was writing both shows so that was another reason to do it. My questions regarding the crossover. Was Mike appearing on TGL before he arrived in Bay City? I think he had been offsreen on TGL after his marriage to Julie. Did he return to TGL for a while and then announce his move to AW or just turn up on AW and maybe a mention on TGL that Mike has taken up a new job...
