  1. Upheaval & Changes in TPTB in some of the soaps on the air between 1996-2003. HER STORIES p. 212-213. Changes in EPs, HWs & network heads; creative types at NBC uneasy with network insistence that violence against women be used even as if it were a ratings enhancer. Also during this time period, P&G explored possibilities of new business models and/or mergers, etc. if not downright sale of shows. Included for example two Hollywood production companies or studios. Paramount & Columbia Tri-Star. Columbia Tri-Star was already in place with soap opera content since they owned parts of DOOL & Y&R. (That's really incorrect. DOOL is correct as it is jointly owned by now Sony & the Corday family corporation but Sony is the show distributor so that is a special deal, too. Y&R is owned 99% by now Sony with 1% belonging to the Corday family corporation. Details of that can be found in Lingering Questions that have answers.) Back to the upheaval because of personnel changes. Between late 1996 & early 1998 all 3 NY soaps replaced EPs & HWs at least once. In 2001, ABC shuffled 3 HWs between & among their 3 primary soaps. Between 2000 and 2003 all 3 networks changed their heads of daytime. The biggest factor in all of this is INSTABILITY. There were 2 soaps at the time that experienced STABILITY & they were the Bell family soaps - Y&R and B&B. Bell Sr. conveyed a sort of immunity to network meddling. When he died in 2005, those two shows lost that immunity & were subject to network meddling just like the other soaps. 2. This question went unanswered when I posted it in the As The World Turns thread, so perhaps that wasn't the best place to pose this question: are there any daytime soaps that aired on American television that had two or more women as directors during the 1980s? As The World Turns had Maria Wagner and Jill Mitwell. I wonder if this was rare or are were there other daytime soaps that had at least two women regularly occupying the director's chair?
  3. The descendants of the P+G founders are publicly slamming the company for its waste of precious resources in the manufacturing of many of their products. Those of us who are fans of P+G produced shows know all too well how short-sighted the company can be about protecting that which is truly valuable. Maybe someone ought to contact the P+G descendants about helping to other aspects of the company's legacy as well, like their video and television archives. P+G is truly a wasteful corporation, any way you look at it.
  4. Lately as I watch classic soap episodes, whether an episode here or there, or a full-on binge, I've noticed some things. I guess, when I really think about it, they are kind of quirky. This makes me wonder whether I'm the only one who picks up on these things or do others? Also, is it just as a soap fan? For example: I've noticed that I really get invested in classic episodes that involve some storm, mainly a thunderstorm or when it's raining cats and dogs. I think this is because, as a kid, I'd watch episodes of As The World Turns and some of the best episodes during that time involved episodes where there were heavy rainstorms. I was watching the third season of The Good Fight and most of the episodes this season involved day after day of heavy rain! And I loved it! The characters on TGF even remarked how bizarre the weather was that it should be raining day after day like that. Too bad they didn't have Scott Bryce reprise his role for some of those episodes, it would've really brought me back to the days of ATWT's Tad Channing murder or the episodes where James Stenbeck emerges from the dead! Another thing I've noticed is that when I watch a classic episode where very popular music is being used, most of the time, I get annoyed. I think, it's because, knowing what I know now about music rights, I can't help but think to myself "this is going to pose a problem down the road". Also, I think this might also go back to my days in the graduate dramatic writing program at university in NYC when professors often thought that the use of music in dramatic scenes of sequences could be lazy--a device that conjures ready emotion whenever the actual writing is lacking (i.e. fails to produce emotion). To a certain extent, I've begun to believe it myself (which is probably why, after a few seasons, Grey's Anatomy started to annoy the heck outta me!) There are probably more quirks but those are the two that stand out in my mind. Does anyone have any other soap related "quirks" that they feel like sharing?
