Unpopular opinions: cancelled soaps edition
Regarding preservation I wonder if 20th Century Fox may have Best of everything and Return to Peyton Place sitting around somewhere. Metromedia was involved with How To Survive a Marriage. That compnay was taken over, but again that show might be sitting in the vaults.

Thinking back to the character of Dr Joshua Landers, one time hubby to Nikki. In casting and writing that role, they seemed to go with the blandest actor and character possible. There was not much chemistry between Josh and Nikki and not much storyline, except for the crazy wife. Josh wasn't given any backstory or relatives. He was just there to be Nikki's husband and as source of conflict with Victor. Did Jack have much to do with Nikki and Josh? They didn't delve into Joshua's psyche and explore his attraction to her or his feelings about Victor. Why was Nikki attracted to Joshua? Did she deliberately choose someone the antithesis of Victor? Imagine if Joshua was a stronger character who went up against Victor or insisted Nikki have nothing to do with him. Maybe his medical background be brought in-a patient accuses him of inappropriate behaviour and Victor funds her legal action. There should have been years of story for this marriage. But it seems Joshua was a plot device and they didn't want an actor or character that might successfully overshadow Jack or especially Victor.

ALL: Characters you are surprised lasted so long
And Sunny joined that elite group of characters that never married. (Or did she wed Bela at series end?)

ALL: Characters you are surprised lasted so long
Sunny Search for Tomorrow. Not because of any fault with the character or actress. Just because that apart from Stu, Jo and Liza ,everyone else from when Sunny came on in 78 ,including her sister, dad and love interests were written off. And heaps of other characters along the way.

So true. That kind of thinking pervaded through soaps and left most shows the worse for wear. Instead of Hulk Hogan , maybe Liza's brother Gary returned?

I don't know about Morgan Fairchild as Alice. Maybe she was too young at that time? Was her Jennifer always bitchy from the outset? From SFT on, Morgan seemed to play that character only. But I like the idea of Alice taking a turn to the dark side. If Rachel could reform, the surely Alice could devolve. It would have been an interesting twist. Alice should have been angry that Rachel got a happy ending but she lost Steve. Some moves to discredit Rachel and maybe an unholy alliance with Iris.

And Just Like That...
Enjoying all your takes on the show. It is interesting to look at this and the decisions that were made in rebooting. The time given over to discussing Samantha and what went wrong and how Carrie felt was an interesting choice as it drew attention to the fact she wasn't there rather than just a quick 'Samantha is living it up in London' Introducing all the new characters and have them all being 'diverse' seemed a little desperate in trying to be relevant. Would Carrie really want to do a podcast with those two and would they really be interested in having her on? And then Carrie was blasted by Che (?) and took it to heart instead of just giving it the eyeroll it deserved. Miranda's clutzy faux pas with the professor and the equally painful follow up was cringey. Miranda was a high powered lawyer FFS and knows how to handle herself. Everything had to be explained eg Big and Carrie and the music. 'We started doing this during lockdown etc ' Overall,I thought the tone was wrong. These successful wealthy women wouldn't really be so concerned with being 'out of touch'. Either they wouldn't give a damn, or have managed to take stuff on board over the years.

I agree. One of the problems was the constant turnover of writers/producers which meant any long term plans were scuppered by the next team ad changes didn't always mean improvements.

Characters you were surprised to see again
Rosemary Prinz as Penny on ATWT in 85. After saying she'd only return if there was gun to her mother's head or somesuch and after being gone for almost 20 years, when there had been plenty of times Penny could/should have come back.

Thanks for those details. Wonder why Kate is not being used? She's now one of the longest serving cast members. After how Doug Davidson was treated, is Kate heading the same way? Hope not.
