Which real life death affected you the most

MacDonald Carey.

I still remember the episode when Alice came down the stairs and said he was gone.

Days lost its heart that day. MacDonald was incredible. The only actor in Days history to garner two consecutive Emmy awards. I remember being very young and my mother crying. I asked her why and she said simply that she had watched from the first episode and felt like he was a father figure. I remember crying because I knew it meant so much to my mother.

Does anyone know where I could watch clips of this episode?

If you find one, let me know Andre. I'd love to see it again.

I'm a baby boomer and been watching soaps since the early 60s. The first celeb soap death I remember is when the actress who played aunt Janet Matthews on Another World was killed in a car accident. I'm sorry I don't remember her name. She was a lovely lady and a wonderful actress. I remember reading about her death in the newspaper and not believing it could be true.

Thanks, you are good. I spent some time at the imdb and couldn't find her name. Thanks for posting, I felt bad to mention her without being able to remember her name. She was awesome. She played Mary Matthews sister who was not married, if I'm remembering correctly. Mary was clashing with her daughter Pat and Pat would go to her aunt Janet for advice. Aunt Janet was more liberal than her sister and there were some fireworks between them. It was must see soap TV back then.

Anna Lee - I only wisht that JI was playing Edward. I know that the tears were falling, but if JI was Edward the tears would have been more of a waterfall.

Macdonald Carey that was so sad.

The actor that played Steve Hardy on GH, I can remember on the show that Tom was the one that found his father in his office and at the end of that show they had some footage of him walking of the GH set turning off the lights.

Nancy Addison Altman. She was only 54 when she died, way too young. She was one of the most beautiful and talented actresses in daytime and so underrated.

One of the things I remember about Nancy is that I always thought it was romantic that she and her husband renewed their vows every Valentine's Day. She was young when she died, but she had 20 years of true love, which must have been some comfort to her.

It's amazing how the deaths of certain celebs can affect you. There are two that I can clearly remember where I was when I heard the news --- Lucille Ball (in the tanning bed getting ready for prom) and Elizabeth Montgomery (announced on my car radio while I was stopped at a light in front of the library). I don't know why those two stuck with me like they did, but I was a big fan of both.

Since we're getting in the non-soap category, then I've got to say that, above all, the celebrity death that affected me the most was John Lennon. I was 15 at the time and my mother woke me up Tuesday morning for school and she told me. I walked to school in tears, shell-shocked. Then there was the fact that it happened here in NYC, my home and, at that time, celebrity-murder-by-crazed-fan was pretty much unheard of. I even went with my mom to the vigil in Central Park.

Elvis was another one that shook me up, no pun intended. He was "the King", he wasn't supposed to die.

Princess Diana's death moved me deeply, too. She died on my sister's birthday and we were sitting there looking at all this coverage. The one thought that went through my mind is she should have never married him. So much crap went on as a result, so much misery and ceaseless hounding. She should have found herself another bloke at 18.

Oh, also DeForest Kelley's death got to me, because I've been a Trekkie since I was 6 years old and he was the first one of "the crew" to go. Jim Henson--total shock and Sesame Street/The Muppets were such a part of my childhood. Michael Landon...too young, and again, such a constant presence. And seeing him having to deal with what the tabloids were saying....very sad.

Princess Di died on my sister's birthday as well.

I first heard about hers on the radio as we were driving my oldest niece and nephew to Macdonalds for a birthday party.

Later on I was at my sister's to baby sit her 4 kids while they all went to the offical opening of Planet Hollywood in Melbourne Australia. I can tell you that the mood there was very somber.

John Lennon I was in a dentist's office at the time trying to figure out a way to get out as I didn't want to be in there will he pulled my brothers tooth out. A nurse came in and said that he had been shot, so it gave me the chance to leave as I said that I wanted some air.

Larry Haines

Um...did it really affect you that much?

Because...um...sorry to tell you...but...um...he's not dead.

:o Oops- u know every time I think of Bernie Barrow, I associate him with Larry Haines for some reason. I don't know why that is, but I do. I remember Barrow dying, and in my mind, I thought he'd played Stu on SFT as well as Louie on Loving. So I guess in some twisted way it's always mad me think both are dead. Even though I listed them. Separately

Hearing about Michael David Morrison (ex-Caleb; ATWT) was a stunner. If I recall correctly, he died of a drug overdose and was only about 30.

He was so great in the role. :( And soon after he died, then...

Doug Marland - so, shocking when he passed away... Especially, so soon after seeing him on the Awards show.

Michael Louden (ex-Duke Kramer, ATWT) - I was on vacation back in Sept. 2004, and the motel I was staying at actually had SoapNet (unlike Comcast, here). So, I actually got to see a few of the Another World reruns. On one episode, Louden was in it, playing a recurring character, Kenny, who was in a scene with Josie and Sharlene, and... it made me remember just how good of an actor he was. Then, when I got home, I discovered that he had died earlier that week. :(

With the passing of Ben Hendrickson, I thought of all the great soap stars that we lost. Which one affected you the most?

The woman who played Erica's mother Mona on AMC.

Great great actress.

LOL. Now that I think about, they do have some similarities in appearance.

I liked Matt's post about remembering where he was when he heard about some non-soap deaths from TV. Here are some of my memories...

Normal Fell (Mr. Roper, "Three's Company") - I was only 8 and had just discovered the show in the summer of 1998 through syndicated reruns every weekday morning and I remember watching the news one night with my parents and they announced it. I was pretty shocked, but being I was so young and had only just started watching, it wasn't too much of a big deal. I miss him a lot nowadays though, after being such a huge fan for nearly 10 years.

Flip Wilson ("The Flip Wilson Show") - it was either not too long after Norman F. or not too long before. Also heard about his passing on the news.

Aaron Spelling (the legendary) - was it even a month ago? I don't know, but I'll never forget it at all. I had heard about his stroke the day before, but then that night I was washing dishes while my father was watching the news and I literally sunk. It was all I could do to keep doing the dishes before I just sat down in my room and inhaled/exhaled.

Carroll O'Conner ("All in the Family") - I remember walking out of my room and going into the kitchen and my mom goes "One of your favorite old TV stars died" and for some strange, strange reason, I thought she meant Mary Tyler Moore, but then she said "Archie Bunker," and I was just shocked.

Nell Carter ("Gimme a Break!") - I don't remember where I was exactly, or what I was doing, but ah, I remember just being devastated. She was one of those sassy, no-nonsense kinds of personas, and I just loved her personality in interviews and I loved her commercials for Liberty.

There are countless others that I remember being affected by. Just off the top of my head, Meredith MacRae, Julie London, Art Carney, Don Knotts, Dana Plato, Glenn Quinn, Kevin Hagen, Isabel Sanford, Helen Martin, Esther Rolle, Christopher Hewett, Hope Lange, and countless others.
