Best known for her legendary portrayal of Monica Quartermaine on the ABC drama series “General Hospital,” actress Leslie Charleson died Sunday morning following a long illness. She was 79 years old.

In a statement, “General Hospital” executive producer Frank Valentini said, “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson.” He added, “Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on ‘General Hospital’ alone and, just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaine family, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew. I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit and incredible presence on set.”

“On behalf of everyone at ‘General Hospital,’ my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time,” Valentini concluded.

Born February 22, 1945 in Kansas City, Missouri, Charleson made her television debut in 1964 on the soap opera “A Flame in the Wind,” playing a character named Pam. Later, she took on the role of Alice Whipple on “As The World Turns” before truly making a name for herself portraying Iris Donnelly on “Love Is A Many Splendored Thing.”

Joining the cast of the daytime drama series in 1977, Charleson’s Monica famously had an affair with former lover Rick Webber which helped establish one of the most popular love triangles in daytime history with her husband, Alan, notoriously “stalking” the pair as he worked to keep tabs on what the pair thought they were doing behind his back.

While the Monica, Rick and Alan storyline proved popular with audiences into the early 1980s, fans were thrown for a loop when Alan and Monica divorced in 1990. By 1991, however, the pair were reunited and remained together until Alan’s death in 2007.

By the mid-1990s, Charleson took on the revolutionary storyline that saw Monica battling breast cancer. In addition to Monica beating the disease, she and Alan found themselves adopting a daughter, Emily, through Monica’s friendship with Emily’s biological mother who lost her battle with cancer.

Charleson appeared less frequently on “General Hospital” in recent years due to health issues, with Variety noting that the actress has “suffered several falls that prevented her from getting around,” resulting in her mobility being impeded and requiring her need for a walker.

The outlet noted that Charleson was hospitalized last week after “one such fall.”

Throughout her career, Charleson received four Daytime Emmy Awards nominations for her portrayal of Monica Quartermaine, first in 1980 in the category of Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series, along with nominations in 1982 and 1983 in the same category. In 1995, Charleson received her fourth nomination but by that time the category had been renamed to Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Outside of daytime, Charleson appeared in episodes of such shows as “The Rockford Files,” “Dharma & Greg,” “Diagnosis Murder,” “The Streets of San Francisco,” “Barnaby Jones” and “Canon,” among others.

Charleson made her final appearance on "General Hospital" in December 2023, appearing in scenes opposite co-stars Jane Elliot (Tracy Quartermaine) and Michael Easton (ex-Hamilton Finn), among others. She also appeared in scenes at the Quartermaine mansion as the family celebrated the holidays.

Watch scenes from one of Charleson's final episodes on "General Hospital" below.

Lesley Charleson decided after LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING that she would never do another soap. But, the director Tom Donovan convinced her that she would be just perfect for this role that was coming up on his show & of course that was Monica on GH & as they say, the rest is history.

I was surprised to read this news, although I don't understand why, considering the rumors regarding Ms. Charleson's health. She, along with Stuart Damon, made the Qs highly entertaining - even if putting the 'fun' in dysfunctional.

May Leslie Charleson rest in peace.

As for the Q mansion, by rights, Tracy or Ned should get it, but we'll see, I suppose.

RIP Leslie.  I have been watching GH since the late 1970’s and it sad to see another core actress depart. Monica has been missed especially as of last month 23 characters lived on HER property and she was never seen but at least still mentioned (Monica, Tracy, Ned, Olivia, Leo, Lois, Gio, Brook Lynn, Chase, Drew, Scout, Dante, Rocco, Jason, Danny, Sasha, Cody, Michael, Willow, Amelia, Wiley, Joslyn, Trina).  How many bedrooms does that place have?  Has more than 23 characters ever lived on a piece of soap property.  Crazy!

Damn, damn, damn. Not Monica!

Le sigh.

One of my earlier GH memories has always been the angry woman who was always arguing with the tall dark-haired man and not understanding why. And their therapy session. And watching them over the years, I grew to love her and Alan.

RIP.

If I were HW...?  Everyone would be stunned to learn Monica made provisions in her will to turn the Q mansion into an orphanage (a sort of shout-out to her own origins).

And it would drive Tracy absolutely NUTS, lol.  ("First, my idiot brother gives her the mansion; now, she's giving it away to the orphans!?"). But Monica throws her (and everyone else) another curveball by asking, via her will, that Tracy be placed in charge of Quartermaine House, thereby making Tracy a sort of Miss Hannigan to all the orphans who would be placed there.  And yes, Sasha would remain on board as the staff chef, lol.

    • Is that recent? She looks good. I like her social media posts about her animals and things. Someone was trying to give her crap about her relationship with Andy Gibb and the drug issues. And she replied, “You didn’t know us. You didn’t know what was in our hearts. Tread lightly on broken dreams.” Classy way to shut someone down.
    • Welcome back, Will and Eric!  They were both used so well today. I’m so glad that they’re going to be here for Marlena and everybody. She definitely needs them. And I love that we got a flashback of Will and John, and that Will credits him as the reason that he’s so courageous. Hopefully, he has scenes with Arianna coming up, and possibly Doug III. I think there’s a storyline there, especially considering what Will said about her being so stubborn and also a little similar to John. Btw, even though Chandler Massey is technically old enough to have an 18 year old child, he definitely doesn’t look it lol  And we got a Will and Paul reunion too. It really is too bad that we can’t get them full time. There’s still so much drama that can be mined from the two of them, and their relationships with Sonny and Andrew, especially now. But with Leo still slithering around, I guess it’s for the best that we’re not getting that

And I love that Will was there for Johnny too. We never really got to see their relationship on screen and I’m glad that we got some of it today. I wish their scenes had been a little longer though. There’s a lot more that they need to discuss about EJ and the rape. But I like that Will comforted him about whether or not he was worthy of having John’s name. And that Marlena was able to shrink him about leaving EJ in the square after he fell.  Eric’s reunion with everybody was really sweet too. I loved the dorky family moment Belle is still being a total douche but I like the drama of her storyline. And I do think that she isn’t being completely stupid, when it comes to EJ. I’m glad that she has Brady though, who was also used very well today. He was breaking my heart in the scene where he was at John’s bedside.  And, congratulations EJ. I think lol  But I have to say, all this talk about John’s miraculous recovery is a little tough to here And, the final scene with John and Marlena
    • Reva should have had a stroke...leaving her permanently MUTE.  Not able to utter a single sound, not even the slightest blubber or gurgle.

And shakin’ me up so, that all I really know is here you come again… and here I go  Enjoy, @Soapsuds
    • I'm still hoping that Leslie turns out to be Sharon's daughter. As I think it could bring another dynamic to the show and the Duprees eventually will need a rival family.

I said Dorian Harewood on Twitter would be good for Dante Green too.

    • Could Nikki just be a big Gram Parsons fan? I think it works for Julie, but they should be doing better by Traci - none of this, from hair to wardrobe, is flattering.
    • To be fair, I don't think she was written out as much as not being written for as they had to gear up for the final episode. I'd assume they might've had the option to use her again but they just didn't find the space.
