Not a dream, not an imaginary story, folks.

Like sands through the hourglass, another iconic TV title is switching to streaming: NBC’s Days of our Lives will become a Peacock exclusive starting September 12, Vulture has learned. The move will end the show’s 57-year run on broadcast television and also marks the exit of NBC from a genre it pioneered 73 years ago with the launch in 1949 of These Are My Children, widely credited as TV’s first-ever daytime sudser. It comes as two other major broadcast titles — Thursday Night Football and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars — prepare to shift to streaming this fall.

In the case of Days, there has been industry speculation about it jumping to Peacock for some time now. The series, produced by Corday Prods. in association with Sony Pictures Television, has dodged cancellation multiple times over the past 15 years, with Sony and NBC often engaged in very last-minute negotiations to hammer out deals which make financial sense to both parties. Days has been the least-watched of the four remaining network daytime dramas for years now, making it increasingly difficult for NBC execs to justify keeping the show around absent reduced license fees (which Sony has largely been able to deliver).

.....

“This programming shift benefits both Peacock and NBC and is reflective of our broader strategy to utilize our portfolio to maximize reach and strengthen engagement with viewers,” Mark Lazarus, chairman, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming said of the decision. “With a large percentage of the Days of Our Lives audience already watching digitally, this move enables us to build the show’s loyal fanbase on streaming while simultaneously bolstering the network daytime offering with an urgent, live programming opportunity for partners and consumers.” NBC will fill the gap left by Days with a new one-hour news program, NBC News Daily, anchored by Kate Snow, Aaron Gilchrist, Vicky Nguyen and Morgan Radford.

Without naming any names (obviously), you'd be surprised how many non-DAYS affiliated people are pissed about this move internally at NBCU. Those are who I'm talking about.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like even the affiliates were taken aback by this move as they had by all accounts planned and committed to airing DAYS for the 2022-23 season. DAYS might not have been doing blockbuster numbers on broadcast, but now they're stuck trying to fill a hole in their schedule with... Dateline reruns?

This was clearly a last-minute desperation move to try and save Peacock, not kill DAYS. It's just how it'll likely play out.

That's nuts that they could screw with the affiliates like that.

Pretty long history of animosity betw NBC & their affiliates, and that's going both ways. Come to think of it, NBC has a pretty long history of animosity betw them & lots of other parties!

Is Peter Reckell actually back filming or are they just using his latest Peacock promotion to get viewers to subscribe?  If he isn't back on set filming, then when did he record this I wonder?  He says he'll be 'watching' on Peacock.

Forgive my cynicism but Days has made a habit of using these vets to get eyeballs on the show for previous Sweeps periods or other nonsense and none of it actually meets expectations.

please ask what time the show will premiere when it debuts on Peacock!

My local NBC station published a primer today that included this:

New episodes of the show will be available weekdays starting at 5 a.m., Central Time.

It also said that shows will be available for viewers who aren't Peacock subscribers:

There are multiple tiers for Peacock subscribers.

  • Free – This will let you watch the new daily episodes, plus up to 100 past episodes.
  • $4.99 per month – This will let you watch the new daily episodes, ALL past episodes and exclusive shows like “Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem.”
  • $9.99 per month – This will let you watch the new and ALL past episodes and the exclusive shows all ad-free!

Do you have a link for this?  I believe you; but it's not what we've been told.
We've been told that there are multiple tiers of Peacock but
starting Sept 12,  DAYS will be only on the paid versions and not on the free version.  Perhaps your local station is misinformed?
I'd be curious to see exactly what/how your station explains things if there is a link.

Peacock just cancelled Rutherford Falls, one of its more critically acclaimed offerings. They are definitely trimming the fat.

It’ll only be available on premium. That was made very clear multiple times and while I was talking with the actors on set yesterday.

Episodes will release daily at 6am EST/3am PST.

Errol will you be posting things from yesterday after the holiday weekend?

before everything is going behind the paywall a few months of episodes were free so they are using bad info. Is the move in Canada a big deal?

I prefer to be optimistic. The fact that NBC is considering giving back the 10E/9C slot back to affiliates is further evidence the company has significant issues. Could this have been planned better? Of course, but NBC seems to be scrambling generally.

The good news about streaming is that folks who wait to get on-board weeks or months from now, will be able to catch up on the post-NBC episodes. Honestly, I've been bingeing 3-4 months at a time for the past 3 years. I find it so much more enjoyable because I can FF through a lot of stuff. Streaming actually got me back to watching DAYS. I was a lapsed viewer for longer than I'll ever admit. I'm sure I'm not alone.

I was a lapsed viewer but I think I said so. At any rate I'm back streaming free now & soon for 8 cents a show.

Okay, I'm going to go stream  my first paid DOOL episode! Just had to share!
