Kathryn Hays was an incredibly beautiful woman with not only timeless grace, but a blunt candor and authenticity to her work and persona that you couldn't fake. We loved her for a lot of reasons. But to me the enduring mystery is something older. The aura and heart in her work obviously fascinated Irna Phillips, who created the enigma of Kim Sullivan we now constantly struggle to decipher today, given the lack of classic episodes available to us during her inception. Kim was Irna's doppleganger/fantasy self, the unwed woman or mother, a woman who had affairs, was fallen yet still the heroine, something which usually seemed unthinkable for Phillips' seemingly moralistic view of many of her characters. To her, Kim was the 'lady in the mirror.' That's the story I am still eager to know more of.

Hays' class, warmth and loving strength onscreen was immortal and I'm glad we got to see her again on the Locher Room before it was too late. I thought she had a lot more years. I guess what she had was just enough. Knowing her, she'd never want us to complain. RIP.

She definitely exuded class, warmth and a kind of 50s movie-star X factor. She never seemed like she was acting or even reciting lines from a script -- her method was utterly natural and seamless. To the point where I wondered if she was even acting at all.

Though I was not a regular ATWT viewer, I did tune in periodically in the 80s and 90s, and her quiet mastery of this character stood out in a cast of very, very strong actors. Kathleen Widdoes was another one. So was Larry Bryggman and William Fichtner. By any measure, I was watching some acting greats on ATWT, perhaps more than any other soap had. What a shame she has departed this life. May she RIP.

KH made Kim such an indelible part of ATWT.  As a viewer, you just lived for those moments when she would level with someone and call them "kiddo."  Such a classy, straightforward dame, a vanishing breed in this business.  RIP.

ATWT was blessed with some truly exceptional talent in front of the camera.  That's why it was so hard for me to watch the show in its' final years, b/c I felt (and still feel) that cast deserved better.

    • I can barely remember who was the person they tested her with for the AMC revival but I *do* remember kinda liking them together (anyone remember better?  lol)  But yes, I feel the same.  It might not help that when I became a regular viewer Tad was presumed dead and she was with Craig...  I do remember that my sister's best friend had been an AMC viewer with her mom and dad and that they were very excited that Tad was returning...
    • Well, that is weird. I do not see him but I only have him on Ignore on 2 accounts.
    • In the preview for the show back in February on Entertainment Tonight, Jeresa the costume designer was specific about each character's economic background, personality, and the character's personal fashion preferences.  Very much about the characters and not the actors. She said Eva is a thrifter, so her normal daily wardrobe would be something from a thrift store, and if BTG buys it new, they intentionally make it look used. So what you said fits about the type of thing a lower income person would buy for a fancy event.
    • As hard as it is for me to imagine anyone but Don Stewart as Mike Bauer...I dunno...maybe someone like "Adam-12"'s Kent McCord?  Or Robert Hogan?
    • Yep I don't hate Javi and then he's macking on Leo and I'm done with him. Leo is a failure who needs to go away   I am bracing myself for Alex reading the manuscript and imagining him and Stephanie as the main characters, because this couple has literally nothing else to do until Joy comes back showing
    • Oh yes. The towel scene though
    • Interesting that Donald May has been mentioned twice. He's on my dreamcast list for Alan. He was somewhat older than Stewart and Bernau, but he could have played either role. An actor I thought about for Mike was Dan Hamilton. He played a role on GL during the 60s, but enough time had passed that it shouldn't have been a problem. He usually played smarmy characters but it would have been cool if they had gone against typecasting.
    • I like Jed Allan, it has to be someone who can play authority but "good" authority to oppose Alan's bad. As mentioned upthread, can you imagine how it would have been with Alan and Mike against each other, with Roger in the mix. But I would have had Roger, ever the opportunist to try to take advantage of their fighting to make his own headway.  Maybe that could have been the storyline, Mike involved with Alex, but the constant fighting with Alan causes a rift (she like Mike fighting Alan when it is to her advantage, but he can be a bit self righteous and I can see him demanding her to disavow Alan publicly..) so that is how Roger lands in her bed, much to the consternation of BOTH Alan and Mike. I would like to have a woman of a certain age being fought over by two men (really three if you count Alan.
    • Please let May have less garbage time. The Y&R threads have shrunken, whereas I can barely keep up with the Beyond the Gates threads.
