Agree.  Granted, I still think the revelation was dumb, but, hey, you work with what you've got.

I thought the funding for Basic Black was based on John being an Alamain.  So, how is the business funded today?

Forget it, j(ake), it's Chinatown DAYS.

Didn't he get money from Isabella as well?  I am not even sure if him and Marlena ever got their money back from the time EJ/Stefano stole it when John was painted to be a Bernie Madoff ponzi schemer about 10 years ago.  Or maybe Basic Black has made enough where it can fund itself now?

I think I figured it out.

Kids. Anna and Robert were gone, the actors weren't coming back anytime soon and the show was very invested in Robin as a young heroine and needed some sort of parental figure to keep her on the show. And Mac as her uncle made sense. Then by pairing him with Felicia he became the father figure to Maxie and Georgie, KW left but the show was again invested in her girls (Maxie anyway) for future story. John J. York is a team player, wasn't going anywhere so Mac became the next best thing to a father for characters they actually cared about writing for.

I do understand the storyline purpose, but when you think about the show in later years while he was still on contract- they wouldn’t give in to Vanessa’s demands to stay during her original run.  They killed off Alan.  They wouldn’t bring Genie back full time.

He also fit into a spot they needed- a legal figure to butt heads with Sonny but not in a serious way.  And I like Mac, I just can’t believe how many other, more vital characters left and he was still standing.

That is a waste of time.  Especially when it comes to any business storyline on DAYS in the last 30+ years.

JJY is probably cheap with a crap guarantee. But yeah you're right, he was also a familiar legal figure they can trot out on occasion to pretend that Sonny and Crew might get in trouble this time.

And I'm happy with Uncle Mac! I don't come to this thread for slander against the star of Werewolf!

Well, you had me at that one for a second, but I doubt JJY's salary/appearances even come close to what Vanessa wanted lol.

Personally I love Mac. I think they should have Maxie singing his praises everyday. And that Robin's kid should call him grandpa. He's probably the only decent person left on the show.

Clarice (Gail Brown) on AW was supposed to be on for one or two shows, blowing bubble gum at Iris' swanky party, but the audience wanted more, so she became a regular for a few years. Not bad for a day player!

Clarice lasted 11 years on Another World from February 7, 1975 to August 15, 1986.  Clarice was never a major star on the show, but she was given some stories throughout the years- having a baby with Robert Delaney, being raped by Jerry Grove, Carl Hutchins hitman, Ross, planted a bomb in the Ewing car intended for Larry, but Clarice survived when the car exploded.  They created a family for Clarice, and her father married Ada.  This made her Rachel's step sister, and probably contributed to her longevity on the show.

Amongst the many reasons that I am surprised Mac Scorpio lasted so long is because he served as the catalyst for Glory Monty's 1991 revamp of GH

Mac was introduced the same week as Bill Eckart, his sister Jenny, mother Angela, father Frank, and (a personal favorite) his cousin Joey.  The revamp was considered a creative and ratings failure, so within months most of those introduced were fired.  Frank died in an earthquake (the type that happen too frequently for an east coast port o' call), Angela moved and sold the bakery (which was never going to be the new Kelly's), and Joey just disappeared.  By the end of Monty's second tenure in 1993 they were all gone except Mac.  So, it is a true surprise that he lasted beyond that infamous stage in GH history.

I still wonder why GH would saddle the luminous Carol Lawrence with such a nothing role like Angela Eckert.  It's like watching Patti LuPone play a suburban mom on "Life Goes On" and pretending it makes sense.

Not disagreeing but wasn't Jenny around torturing us for a little longer than that?   Sly was definitely around longer, but he was a kid.  And didn't they throw Mac at Holly for a minute which might have helped him as well.
