Agreed.  I never understood why TBTB wrote Abigail as strong under Kate Mansi, and weak as hell with Marci Miller.  I am so glad that they decided to keep Abigail strong this go around with Marci playing the role.  This is most definitely Marci's best run in the role, and it's not her fault, it's the writers writing the character as Abigail and not like a meek, mousy new character.

I should have known the Rhodes (Rhoads?) guy would be dead in 5 minutes. He was IMO more interesting than Clyde, Orpheus, or Evan.

I did at the very beginning when ED was playing her because there was an intriguing quality to it

But that's typically the kind of pairing that should have not have been a long-term thing.

I guess I’m glad Austin & Carrie got back together but I wish we’d get to see all this play out on the show!  I know every return of theirs gets seriously f’d up, but I think they have a lot of potential after such a long break from the canvas.  I’m just glad Shawn & Belle have a place on the show with RC.  After a decade+ of “gray” (or just villain) leads, I really miss the role heroes used to fill.  And while I super appreciate J&M and S&K, they’re way past their adventure “Days,” as Stevano proved.  Abby is probably the only long-term traditional heroine under 55 the show has had in the last 10ish years.  I am so glad Abby is still on the show.  I always loved Marci Miller but she’s really delivering every beat consistently this time.

Anyway, all I’m long-windedly saying is the hero still deserves a place... After so many years of Sami, EJ, Nicole, Xander, Kristen, Stefan, Eve, Theresa, etc. getting so much focus, it’s made me miss annoying airhogs like Austin/Carrie, Shawn/Belle, etc. lol.

I think soaps underestimate how much shows need some genuinely good characters to balance the crazy, evil and messed up out there. Carrie was annoying but even when being on the verge of doing a "bad" thing (cheating with Mike) she was thoroughly goody-2-shoes about it. And like it or not, it provided a good balance with Sami's energy.
I hate that the show has defanged Sami a lot as she became a center of the show. If only for that, I wish Carrie was there as balance although maybe Belle can be the proxy ying to Sami's yang.
Austin/Carrie is the end game but honestly I don't miss Austin as much. Lucas is much more interesting and neither of the two Austin actors really fit the role anymore.

It makes me sad that soaps don't know that the best way to preserve a good thing is to make it a once-in-a-while treat and instead insist on running anything good they got going on (a fun gimmick, a couple, etc.) to the ground.
The reason the absurd initial run of Kristen and Susan reached legendary status was not just because it was great soap and Eileen D. just rocked it, it was because it didn't overstay its welcome (well, by a few months at the end, but not that long). Which was quite the treat considering how long it dragged on during the storyline but the payoffs were spectacular and everyone was happy. It happened and it stayed a great memory because we moved on.
Bringing Kristen back was risky but as a short-term stint it worked because it was a treat. Bringing her back full-time however, setting aside the issue of the recast, hasn't worked because this is not a character that can plausibly work long-term. And the Susan joke wears itself quickly as well.

I am starting to feel the same way about Vivian too to be honest: I can take Louise Sorel and bad writing but bad writing AND two recasts and I now wish they had just kept her dead.

If there were good writers - which there aren't - I'd actually be interested in a Brady/Chloe revisit. The Kristen/Brady ickfest should have NEVER been a "romance" and they sure as hell should have NEVER procreated. I know it's "soapy" and Brooke Logan of B&B and Reva Lewis on GL went through the males of their respective love interest's families, but it grosses me out to remember that Kristen, by rights, should be well into her 50s, was engaged to Brady's FATHER, and was once pregnant with Brady's SIBLING and Rachel's own aunt or uncle.

Just hell no to all of that mess.

So if Chloe can rehab Brady, all for it.

    • Yes another recent example I forgot about. I think it is exciting that the shows are allowing them to direct. Did Allison Sweeney direct at DAYS for a bit before she went off contract? For some reason that is ringing a bell.

    • After reading your comment and thinking about Monty taking Genie Francis and her father to dinner to tell them she wanted to court a younger audience and use Laura to get them, it makes me think the story switch from Lesley to Laura was instigated by Monty. A shocking and modern storyline for the times that played to the strengths of an emotional actress like Genie. The original idea was much more traditional for the times than  going that far with Laura instead. She essentially is raped by Hamilton IIRC, which is wild to think about for back then. They certainly wouldn’t tell that story today, they don’t take risks or go to the edge like that.
    • I know that episode. I actually liked that one, but alas...
    • TeamKat.   Eva wanted to take it to Hades by walking into Kat's house with attitude and using the B word. So don't get all teary-eyed now that Kat wanna matched energy.

    • I thought the same thing outside of Sprina and early Chase/BLQ, but Sinn made me a believer. And that scene sealed it for me. I've been with them ever since.    But yeah, I do feel what a supercouple is...now...has definitely evolved and changed though. That fact, for me, was why Finn and Steffy really stood out for me because while they are their own thing...I don't at all doubt they love each other...no doubt. Making them like the old supercouple at the same time. Liam who?  IKR.
    • While I criticize their hiring, I fully recognize that they didn't hire themselves. TPTB hired the actors and wrote for them. And no, no one would've been able to step into Bernau's shoes. Pilon at least conveys a certain Machiavellian menace . RR is just wrong for the role, but the subsequent writers all seem obsessed with pitting Alan and Phillip against each other over women. The Lewises, no matter what you think about them, only passed one woman 'round. Alan and Phillip passed around three---Blake, Beth and Olivia.    There is a moment when Van tells Alan--if we marry, don't screw me over or you'll regret it. So I wouldn't doubt that Van would've been the trigger in Phillip's takeover had Maeve stayed. Instead, Henry ends up tipping the scales, while Josh kind of gums up the works (I guess, I haven't watched all of it, I don't think most of it is up.) If they wanted a triangle, they had one--Alan/Van/Ross. With Alan and Ross' history, it practically would've written itself. Maybe our thinking is wrong...maybe Long would've put Van and Ross back together, and broke them up to set up the triangle.  I do think they were flirting with the idea of Rick/Chelsea after Johnny left. There's a point when Mindy comes back to town where Chels thinks Mindy doesn't appreciate Rick enough. I just think that it would've been too weird, having Rick fall for another one of Phillip's ex's, and Mo being her sister and his stepmother. Y'know I am all about any story that gets Van away from ****. Developing amnesia, becoming a bad lounge singer named Panessa who performs poetry in the park. ANYTHING. Did Roger and Billy ever have a conversation after Billy got out of jail? I know Roger told Vanessa he'd been paroled, but I'm not sure they truly crossed paths again. Part of that's timing, but I also think TPTB really just didn't want to bring up that past directly.
