Since obviously AW struggled to recast Alice with someone suitable with the constraints they were working with at the time, as a thought experiment, assuming that time and space and money are not constrained, is there any actress past or present, living or dead, big screen, small screen, or stage, who would have been close to an ideal Alice? (Assume that she is willing to bleach her hair, and if that is not sufficient, go to any lengths to change anything about her physical appearance, in order to perform the role.)

Again, I personally think that Another World did something amazing in hiring Susan Harney to replace Jacqueline Courtney in the role of Alice.

One actress who could have played the role was Judith Light (Karen #2 on One Life to Live) but I would not have wanted  her to change looks.    I also think that Ms. Light would have played Alice her own way, and the viewers would have had to adjust or stopped watching the program.

The only veteran that I would have considered for the role was Leigh Lassen/Natalie Isreal (Search for Tomorrow).

Ms. Lassen stepped into a mulit-recast role successfully.    And, Ms. Light replaced Kathryn Breech quite successfully!

I've been listening to the Passions podcast (iykyk) and was reminded of Gina Marie May, the one month Kay - that is some bad recasting

The weird thing about Kay was that from Taylor Anne Mountz to Deanna Wright and then to Heidi Mueller the character changed with the recast, which I consider a sign of a bad recasting.  Kay started as a sporty almost tom-boy who palled around with Miguel.  The initial point was that Miguel denied her attraction to him because he considered her to be one his childhood buddies.  Then, by the time Heidi Mueller (a failed reality star turned "actress') came along Kay became a va-va-voom girl who all the boys lusted after, and she looked like she could never dribble a basketball.

Then, you have her sister Jessica who was off screen for so long between recasts that each time the character was reintroduced she had different traits.

I didn't even remember her. Was it a Charity Roehmer situation or was she OK on-screen and other factors might have played a part?

I am asking because we often hear long-time actors say that the actors who can't remember their lines "don't last very long" but it is not that common for actors to be quickly fired so I am always wondering who that might be.

In other words, turn down the volume..the screeching is about to start!!! Weird turn of phrase since she didn't create Alex to begin with. However, it was prophetic as from then on in the writers made Alex a drug dealing shrew and then a meek little house mouse..she was never again really Alex (not Marj's fault.)

Rosemary Forsyth captured the icy side of Laura, but precious little of the warmth or sexiness that Susan Flannery brought to the role. Jaime Lyn Bauer was just another character entirely, I don't think she captured even the slightest essence of Laura ... though, to be fair, JER wrote her as a weak, simpering woman, which was about as far from the original Laura Horton as you could get.

    • I think Jason might've posted some numbers for the syndication a while ago and the numbers for Falcon Crest was horrible. Like 1.5 rating or something, which was terrible.    ETA: it was actually Paul Raven:   New to syndication 60 min Fall Guy 67 markets 3.1/8 Falcon Crest 110 markets 1.1/5 To get into the top 40, you needed a 4.6/9 rating for reference - and Falcon Crest managed to get into a lot of markets to begin with. In the fall of 1985 Dynasty, Dallas and Knots were syndicated (show / rating / share / coverage % / markets): Dallas 3.4 10 51.7 92 Dynasty 3.4 10 48.7 47  Knots Landing 3.3 10 12.5 20  So, Knots as an example trippled Falcon Crest's rating with 20 markets - I'm sure those were major ones but it just goes to show you how much Falcon Crest bombed in syndication.
    • It's not bad but the stories move too slow. It's the same problem when Dan O'Connor was CO-HW with Van Etten, they have a million stories and they all drag on endlessly with no resolution. I'd argue the majority of the stories airing now are good but you get sick of waiting months for something to happen.
    • Thanks. I must have missed that period entirely for Lifetime.
    • Thanks. I know Marland did that type of thing sometimes but it's less likely with these characters. I don't even remember Alex ever mentioning him.
    • French fan summary Rusty took over Simon's job at Lewis Trucking after Simon transferred to Lewis Oil's North Carolina office to live near Jessie and Calla. I doubt they would bother following up a story for offscreen characters eg marriage and a baby.
    • I suspected that the performance with the reveal was the reason why the Ted actor got the axe and it looks like I was right. He wasn't really good at conveying what needed to be conveyed in those scenes. Claybon is at least slowly improving (but I agree that he still needs to work on his line delivery), but I do wonder what will happen when his big reveal is coming up.
    • I've already asked this before, recently, but can anyone who watched those years more closely tell me if anything said about Jessie and Simon at the end of their profiles is accurate (about them marrying, naming a baby after Brandon/Lujack, etc.)?
    • Nicole is way too smart to not know she was carrying twins - she's a doctor! My guess is that Leslie did abort her baby out of fear, and as payback, stole Ted and Nicole's child (Eva), and stole Kat from another family to replace her in the hospital.
    • Those Soap Central profiles have a lot of incorrect info. According to SOD summaries and the Daytime Newsletter of the time,Tim left town for a new job and Pam reunited with the father of her baby and also departed Springfield. They did not marry.
    • Do we believe that Jabot is at the level of Estee Lauder?? I am on board with Jabot deciding to expand but the way it was handled was ridiculous. Jabot just decided and bingo, that was that. Not months of negotiations and decisions about how it would fit into the Jabot portfolio. And then no follow through. Josh thinks he's serving business stories by characters sitting around and discussing mergers, takeovers and job switching. Now we have Audra setting up her own company -Vibrator or something. Well, why not? You don't need staff, office space or even products.
