Christine Tucci was a much better actor than Sandra Ferguson and much more convincing as an intelligent professional woman. I never thought of Vicky/Grant/Amanda as a love triangle because it was so much about Grant's need for power and control. And as such Amanda wasn't losing to Vicky (or later, Lorna), she was another woman Grant was abusing. I didn't need Amanda to be a romantic heroine.

I think both SSH and Robin came back to their respective shows feeling pressured to compete with either the tone of the show (Hayes) or in Robin's case, the network expectations. I've said for a long time that I think being cut by JFP traumatized Robin and that she came back determined never to be made to leave the show she loved again, and that she'd prove her worth by going hard and going big every single day so the brass would notice her effort. She did good work after returning in 2003, but she too often had about two speeds and rarely calmed down or went quiet. I'll always love Robin, but it hurt her performance.

I think the best recasts could be Christina/Blake on Guiding Light.  I think all 3 adult Blake's were great.  I also think McKinsey will always be the best Alexandra, but you know Marj Dusay and Joan Collins were really good.  I also liked Peter Simon as Ed, and Ron Raines as Alan.  For recasts, GL did pretty well over the years.  Laura Wright would always be the best Cassie but Forrester did OK.  The Mindy's, ditto - I liked Krista Tesreau but the Kimberly Simms and Barbara Crampton were fine in the role for me.  Ann Hamilton not.  Maureen I thought was Ellen Dolan until Ellen Parker took over the role...EP was better.   Oh and as someone mentioned, Wendy Moniz was Dinah to me...but Gina Tognoni was also very very good.  The previous Dinah...can't remember her name but went on to other shows, but I don't remember her as great as Dinah.   I know a lot of people had issues with Nancy Alban as Michelle but to me I thought she was much closer to the way Rachel Miner would have played an adult Michelle.

I think SSH's reason for going OTT is much like Strasser's. Reilly said he couldn't write for SSH -- meaning her character was too intelligent for his dumbed-down plotting -- so when he eventually brought her back she determined she was going to give him the cheap theatrics he adored. And she's never looked back.

I always thought Strasser's stint as Hecuba on Passions made her realize OTT was the way of the future.  She is capable of subtle work (watch her in the 80s mini series Baby M where she played against type)... and her 80s turn as Dorian.  More subtle and played Dorian more close to the vest.

And regarding Michelle on GL.... I liked Miner the best, followed by Joie Lenz, than Budig and didn't like St Alban at all.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I did not care for the character of Jessica Buchanan til Bree Williamson took over the role.  She brought Jessica to adulthood with sexiness and charm.  Torpey's version was innocent and pure.  Like I said, maybe I am in the minority.

    • @alwaysAMC Great mini-review as always.  That Gilly story is...certainly one I could not forget... I imagine a number of viewers were shocked with the temporary recast. It was revealed in the soap magazines, as was the news about Frank Beaty's breakdown, I think. I think Wolf had some statements or an interview at the time but very little. I wish someone could interview him. He did a good job under extremely tough circumstances.  For some reason I have a vague memory of him in the Marian getup but that's probably not right.  I'm glad you have appreciated the material with Susan after a shaky start. I always enjoyed her, and she was the only love interest I liked Nick with.

    • https://www.instagram.com/p/DJJTEW8J5EA/ 1989 Daytime Emmys Victoria Wyndham gives moving tribute to Douglas Watson, AW's Mac Cory Harding "Pete" Lemay created the character Mac Cory & then Doug Watson played him for 15 years. When Doug died on May 1st, 1989, it was a huge loss to the show, the other actors & also to the fans.

    • Jonathan Kellerman is definitely the most EON/Slesar-like writer in the business right now.  Unfortunately, he's almost 80 years old.  Interestingly, he has a son (Jesse Kellerman) who's about 45, who's been studying under him.  I believe what makes the Kellermans such effective mystery & crime writers is their background in psychology.
    • I never understood the point of Marchetti. Summer left the show for a job there in Italy. OK. When she returned they had Jack buy the company. Why couldn't Summer have returned and simply stated it was not a good fit, she missed her home , family/friends etc It was absurd that this internationally successful fashion empire could just be bought by a US cosmetics firm at the drop of a hat. What was the point when they never did anything with it at all? Summer simply could have gone to work at Jabot. And wasn't there some nonsense about an offshhoot called Marchetti Home? Was Phyllis attached to that at some point? This show...

    • Haven't seen today's ep yet but so will be interested to see the clothes. So far I think they have been very character specific (even if I don't like some of them eg Kat's cutsie style) Anita is very showy/glittery, Nicole classic elegance, Dani sexy/bold colors etc. Unlike Y&R which seems much more generic. Also BTG pays attention to the men's wardrobe and has developed a style for the boyz-which is harder to do with male fashion. The absence of any of Derek/Ashley at any of these big events again demonstrates how they are in a different universe to the rest of the show. Not that a nurse and a fireman would be there but still they seem destined at this point to stay in their own lane and have little interaction with the core of the show.
    • Agnes had written for Bernard Grant for many years on TGL as well as Ernest Graves and Joe Gallison,Doris Belack,Robert Milli, and  Antony Ponzini at AW. So she would probably gravitate to writing a role with an actor in mind or choosing someone she had written for before who she knew could deliver.
