I actually think the “woke” aspect of the show was the only thing that worked… sure, the characters realistically would’ve faced more adversity in the face of being so othered, but it felt so refreshing to just have diversity in so many forms be featured, celebrated, and treated pretty authentically.  But, ya, there was admittedly a lot of wish fulfillment on the flip side.  And QaF was always a show that fearlessly faced bigotry, it didn’t pretend it didn’t exist (or minimize it).

My problem with this reboot was that it was on f-ing crack.  They did EVERYthing in 8 or however many episodes.  Literally burned through almost every couple combination and no one had to sit with any consequences from their or others’ actions.  That’s where I totally agree with your “no underlying character connection/compassion/emotional pull.”

Also, it was a mind f having the Michael/Lindsay amalgamation character in Ruthie!  Lol

I grew to enjoy this show, but it was very uneven. I loved the diversity of the cast, but I wish there was more show than tell, if that makes sense. I felt like the dialogue was very clunky over explaining everything instead of letting us learn about these characters in a more natural way. Once they got all the explaining out of the way there was a good show to be found. I do wish they got a second season to see if it continued to improve.

None of it made sense or felt earned. Just a lot of plot-driven nonsense to add soapy appeal without understanding what soaps are about. It felt like he didn’t really understand his characters and therefore didn’t have a lot of confidence they would merit an audience’s attention without all the convoluted mess. Dunn needed to study Peyton Place and Knots Landing and write accordingly. But that type of approach probably wouldn’t have gotten this project greenlit.

I love seeing characters we don’t usually see represented, but if it’s not backed up with the basics of good writing, or even just good entertainment, it’s all for naught. The episode that focused on the sex party for disabled queer people had a lot of beautiful moments, but it would have hit harder if we had gotten to know Marvin a bit better beforehand. It felt like Dunn was writing this for short attention spans, thought he needed to address everything NOW, and self-sabotaged.

    • It definitely flowed beautifully. So much that I was annoyed when Vanessa/Doug because I wanted to get back to the party. I know it was intentional to build up tension and suspense. It worked. lol. I'm glad it was there in hingsight because it gave us that great conversation between Doug and Vanessa. Foreshadowing? And yesss!!! This episode was sooo old school soap giving beat after beat after beat leading up to the unveiling of Eva as Ted's daughter. And we still have plenty of fallout/aftereffects to work through.   Speaking of...Bill, Bill, Bill lol. Good to have confirmation HE was the scary lawyer.   I'm sure I will have a busy Monday, but I can't wait for it. I don't know what I'm looking forward to more. Probably Anita vs Silk Press Sheila tbh. And yes, I feel they will be matching each other 'blow for blow.'
    • And if they go there, it could also be tied to Johnny completely cutting him off, possibly going to work for Titan, etc.
    • @AbcNbc247 maybe it is just that they've gone to that well too often, and I don't like when DAYS goes dark, but I'm OK with EJ abusing drugs, and just skipping the whole sobriety part. Side note: experiencing hallucinations of my son killing me would be enough for me to never want to take a pill again.

    • Part of the reason that Courtney worked at OLTL was because the show had an actual character for her to play.  One that was somewhat different than her character on AW, and after the way she was treated over at AW.. it had to have been nice to be courted onto a new soap that actually valued your contributions.
    • I figured the "long" was already implied

    • The show has finally figured out the correct scene to have at the end of the episode. The one thing I loved about the show today was that we got a pretty decent length scene of Silk Press Sheila at the celebration without any cutaways.  It reminded me of an old school soap opera scene that would run several moments (i.e. Renee's long speech going after the upstanding citizens of Salem on Days in 1983 before her murder).   I think Anita and Silk Press Sheila would be evenly matched.. she would be the one person that Anita would have to work to get the best of.    I do agree that Derek/Ashley were probably cut from the episode.. and maybe their scenes will be used in a different episode.  The scenes that were included (Bill/Hayley and Vanessa/Doug) had something to do with the scenes going on at the party.    Unpopular opinion:  I actually prefer Bill with Hayley.. .they make a good couple.
