Add to that actresses like Viola Davis and Kerry Washington that have their own production companies (Viola's Juvee is becoming pretty successful). This isn't even mentioning the burgeoning indie film scene that has cropped up on Netflix over the past several years--for someone with her looks, charisma and yes, talent, the challenges are many but there are more opportunities than ever. Even though I used to love the soap genre and even briefly entertained the notion of writing one in grad school but I hope Mishael doesn't limit herself to soaps. personally feel like all of OWNs drama offerings are trash, even tho I gave Greenleaf a shot for a season. LOL i actually think she might be able to get on a CW show or something, but I just don't know? If there were any real offers out there I think she would have been gone a long time ago (like Sofia Pernas) but it's hard out there for a pimp. If GH can come up w/ a solid $$ offer, I do think she will jump ship there. They have been trying to build up the black cast, and I think they need a stronger anchor heroine than Jordan.

I don't get OWN but people are really getting a lot of great opportunities as a result of working on Queen Sugar, especially the group female directors who have worked on that show. We have no idea what Mishael Morgan's situation is. She has a young child. Is it not possible that she turned down more exciting but less stable work in the past because she wanted to have a baby? Her child is a bit older and now that the child can be in school, perhaps her outlook and her plans have changed. None of us has access to that information so we're all speculating, right? Also, let's be real, her position is stronger after being on a show (even though its a daytime soap opera, it is a highly visible one) and having built a loyal following. T.V. producers look at that now, it's why primetime courts social media #s so assiduously. Out of curiosity I did a search of her name and the hevon hashtag and a bounty of positive remarks came up. You honestly think that has no impact on a casting director? We have no idea what her plans are for the future, so I'd rather take a wait and see approach, rather than automatically consign her to the daytime genre which is currently on life support. Sofia Pernas was let go from Y&R because she didn't take off with the audience. She was just able to get work after leaving. Kinda like the guy who played Luca. Mishael has gone on record saying that she has been offered other roles that she had to turn down because it didn't work out with her shooting schedule for Y&R. Granted, some of the shows on OWN are terrible IMO. Mostly those associated with Tyler Perry. But Queen Sugar is legit and I think it stands up against the top rated shows on any major network. June 12, 20187 yr Member Tika Sumpter is on one of those awful (but very highly rated) Tyler Perry shows (The Haves and the Have Nots) and has not lacked for work because of it.

She was the straw that stirs the drink, and Mal and Sally used her as a crutch when things got boring. Gina Tognoni, as fantastic and committed as she is, doesn’t have that arresting star quality that Mishael has. If only they could bite the bullet and get Victoria Rowell back...that’s the only person in recent Y&R memory (other than maybe TL, whose character they stupidly killed off) who just makes everything seem effortless. I would LOVE to have Victoria Rowell on screen with Mishael Morgan!
June 12, 20187 yr Member It's ironic to see how many actors of color who were accused of being boring/not able to act/lacking charisma go on to significant success after they leave Daytime. Tika Sumpter being a perfect example.

June 13, 20187 yr Member I'm glad even though I only watch once a week or so. I never liked the character because they only wrote her as the mean black girl. Honestly, Devon should go too. He's about as interesting as a piece of cardboard. Never understood the love for him either. I guess they had to make way for the powerhouse actress that is Hunter King. LOL. This show is a sinking ship. Won't be long. If they could ever figure out how to STOP writing for Victor and Jack they might stand a chance. Gina Tognoni has pretty much been a waste. These actors don't have anything to work with. Melissa Ordway should go be a model on The Price is Right. She was good at that.

This seems to have been by design too because...couldn't risk offending middle America with a Black lead or a Black character who could possibly outshine a White one. Wasn't the 'boring' tag the knock against Renée Elise Goldsberry when she was on OLTL as well? I know people would intermittently say this about Tamara Tunie when she was on ATWT. Tunie was wise to do other projects, including a recurring character on L&O throughout much of her ATWT run and was smart to leave and become a series regular for L&O. The assertion that Black/POC characters are boring is a well-worn critique that is used instead of looking at the lack of consistent story.
