Y&R March 2018 Discussion

My problem is that they are pretending to do a slow, character-driven build with this story, and it just feels messy. At the end of the day, this is Victoria’s story, and that’s been clear, but it’s been dipping in and out of JT’s perspective in a way that feels inconsistent and a little offensive. They are showing how a predator breaks down someone’s confidence bit by bit, and I get that, which dovetails with Victoria’s struggles to assert herself in the shadow of her abusive Trump-like father. I suspect that they’re using this as a #metoo/feminist story in which Victoria is an unlikely victim and Abby and maybe even Ashley are compelled to set aside their adversarial attitudes and rally around her. But the seams are really showing.

The biggest problem is this story is OOC for Victoria.

She's always had a troubled love life but she was never a wallflower. This whole story is written to AH as an actress instead of Victoria as a character. Just like when Y&R made Victoria into a baby obsessed psycho during the whole Miller/Tom/Jenkins era.

Sort of the way Gloria morphed from a social climbing oddball (JVA) to golddigging silent film actress (JC) or Ashley going from Corporate Ice Princess (ED) to Swoony RomCom Heroine (BE).

The problem is there are very few stable couples right now. Besides Paul/Cricket, Philly & the recently reunited Lane everyone else is in limbo.

Y&R could've (credibly) told that type of story with Paul/Cricket but Y&R doesn't care enough about either character or their relationship to tell that story.

So the show is stuck warping characters to fit an agenda (much like with Dina's alzheimer's story).

Yeah, Paul/Cricket would have worked 20 years ago and been more credible than that die he/didn’t he? rape. I think Kevin/Mariah would have also worked, and the actors could have sold the hell out of it. But AH is their star, and Victoria is the Newman heiress, and she gets the “juicy” material regardless of whether the character fits it.

That's depressing. For TPTB to put a bunch of eggs in that basket is sad. Is she supposed to be rootable?

If someone asked me for the top five actresses on the show, she wouldn't come close to even making the list.

I've been a smidge bitter since David Tom was shown the door. As a viewer, it came across that she wasn't giving it her all because he wasn't Billy Miller. I was probably reading too much into it at the time, but it stuck with me.

Lily would have still taken him back after cause they would have said he had a brain tumor or something to facilitate it. So no...bad idea.

You'd think that Abby and Ashley would rally. But I fear that Abby would take the opportunity to push her out and take her job. MY seems tone deaf sometimes. So instead of a woman's round table on The Hilary Hour, we will get Abbots taking over NE.

Victoria has been written to AHs strengths every since they paired her Victoria and Billy. This isn't new.

Paul is not an abuser either despite that OOC rape of Christine to make her relationship with Michael more palatable.

You weren't. AH said in an interview how she had to snapped out of it on set. They had to prompt her to get moving in scenes. I'm assuming she was just so shell shocked that Billy Miller wasn't in the scenes

Victoria has been rewritten for AH from the very beginning. Hence her being a committed 'artist' in Europe and chem tested with JT within a couple months of her arrival in GC.

I totally agree that the rape/not rape was OOC for Paul & was done to make Michael (and Michael/Cricket) more palatable, but acknowledging it (and everything that led up to it) would make a Big Little Lies situation for them much more logical than it would for any other couple on Y&R's current canvas.

These shows don’t have any balls. I mean, it’s not like she’s Ellen Pompeo and has a producer credit. Yet she wields all of this power. She must test very well with focus groups. I’ve grown to appreciate her, but she’s eminently disposable. I suppose she realized her chemistry with BM was the only thing keeping her from the door.

    • This is where McLaibey falls apart. It becomes clear that McTavish had not thought past Brent/Marion...so the energy drops and she starts throwing things at the wall (Blakes twins, Lonatrat.)   Fans HATED this funeral. Everyone is mad at everyone else, which is fine, the death of a beloved community figure would give people a reason to come together...(Quint and Nola could come together at least for  a bit to support each other, Nola and VAn could finally admit they kinda, sorta like each other) Its just an example of McTavish's mean writing.   I have a feeling they were going to make Dahlia Frank's kid but they chickened out. Making Tina a prostitute didn't help, they could have been lovers when they were young but felt society pressure to part. Marcus took over David's role (you can't have two young black men at that time...)   Get used to it...this will happen, the same storyline over and over until the end.
    • Does anyone happen to have a recording or any footage of Jennifer’s funeral?
    • It's such a shame that the conflict couldn't be resolved in a mature way between the two actors.. especially since Albee was a bigger asset for the show in terms of character and his popular will they/won't they pairing with Deborah Saxon. One of the things about Edge was that it was just as popular with male viewers as it was with women.  It's one of things I think the show forgot in the final year or two with the deemphasis on the male characters.
    • Daytime Confidential did a podcast of the worst mothers in soaps and here were their lists.  5.Felicia Scorpio 4.Reva Shayne 3.Dina Mergeron 2.Helena Cassadine/Shelia Carter 1.Brooke Logan Dishonorable Mentions- Stephanie Forrester,Ann Douglas, Phyllis Summers and Joanna Manning Joshua 5.Anna Devane 4.Diane Jenkins 3.Ava Vitali 2.Shelia Carter 1.Brooke Logan Dishonorable Mentions-Alexis Davis, Felicia Scorpio, Eve Donovan, Heather Webber, Natalia Ramirez, Stephanie Forrester, and Ruth Martin Luke 5.Natalia Ramirez 4.Diana Coville 3.Helena Cassadine 2.Alexis Davis 1.Arlene Vaughn Dishonorable Mentions-Stephanie Forrester Now for my comments. Wonder what Ruth Martin ever did to this guy?!!! I mean Ruth Martin? I don't get it. Next, IMO they are just picking on Eve Donovan. Who is Dina Mergeron? Same question  Joanna Manning? Diana Colville Is that because of the bad DAYS retcon of her being Leo Stark's mother? All of the rest, CO-SIGN!

    • I don't really care about what the men are wearing, or not wearing.   What I care about is focusing on the writing and character development for each of the male characters. Andre really doesn't have a lot of character development that sets him apart from the other male characters except that he seems content to be degraded and mistreated by the elitist Dani.  I would like to know why a good looking younger guy like Andre would willingly be at the mercy of an emotional vampire such as Dani.   Martin, on the other hand, seems to have decent character development.. and it is partly due to how the actor chooses to recite his lines.  Martin was raised in a very privileged household and probably went to the best schools... so it makes sense that he would come across as thinking he was above everyone else.  Most people raised in a upper class situation as the Duprees would view themselves as better than others (it's the same trait Dani seems to employ on those she feels superior to). It makes me wonder how Nicole came out of that family being so warm and nurturing  when her family dynamics seemed very appearance oriented.
    • I know, right. I after just re-reading the thread, I'm like ooppph!
    • Lulu and Dante were divorced before her coma, but she was still in love with him.  He just didn't know.  They haven't been married for years.    I was pretty mixed about Lulu getting involved when it was just a child out there in the world, but now that she realizes it's Gio I am okay with her telling Dante.  It also is her son's sibling.  I still think it's BLQ's choice though.  Lulu is in a rough spot because I think Dante will be mad if she keeps it a secret and Chase, Brook, Lois, etc will be mad if Lulu tells. Without veering too far into the classic area of the show, I had no problem with Robin telling AJ about Michael.  It may not have *exactly* been her place, but she could see how Carly was manipulating the entire situation.  It also ruined her romantic relationship with Jason for good.  Jason and Sonny were furious with Robin and practically ran her out of town, so I think we were to believe she was the bad guy.  It was a bit out of character for Robin to spill, but KMc was leaving the show.
