Even in these models...viewership still counts I guess.  I watched it and thought it was funny.

I think we are seeing people want escapism again from real life.  Or they want something more melancholy than what one a day at a time offered.  Shows balancing the escapism and real life like odaat suffer.

Still..I'd rather the show go out in top notch quality over continuing with their quality diminishing..like the original version did...and other Netflix shows.

I'm also more than a little annoyed that they knew this could be the last season and did so little with Penelope's character. She was treading water and only toward the very end of the season did she get more of a chance to shine. Such a waste of Justina Machado's talent.

I think (like a lot of platforms) Netflix is caught between making quality television (and I think they do make some of that, in addition to making some schlock) and having to learn how to function like a real business in what is still a fairly new landscape, which they pioneered. That leads to a lot of schizophrenic and often backwards behavior, claiming to want one thing while doing another and trying to suddenly make hard-nosed decisions like a major network while claiming they're not like the networks. Well, they are and they aren't and they need to figure that out.

I agree with so many of the tweets Vee cited. Netflix can't continue pretending they are everyone's best buddy and then make decisions like this.  The way they are burning through cash there is no way this was more than a drop in the bucket to them anyway.

This is part of what I wanted to mention when I cited a gripe with Netflix's new business model (in the Awards Show thread). They have now become so committed to drawing in the big-time film directors and the big budget projects that they are leaving behind the independent and indie-adjacent fare that used to be their stock and trade, including a lot of shows by minority creatives.  It's a shame, really.

It's no coincidence that they've canceled so many shows with minority majority cast (e.g.The Get Down, Sense8, Everything Sucks).  I've never seen 13 Reasons Why or Insatiable but I take it that they've been renewed and people are objecting to it?

Something seems fishy about this.

Sure does.  And if you know about the history of the FOX, WB and UPN networks, for example, then you know that b.s. moves like cancelling ODAAT are nothing new.

It's the same old story: use us (meaning, the "urban" audiences) to build your brand, then toss our asses out with the trash while you go chasing after white America.

I hate to say it, but maybe Mo'Nique had a point about boycotting Netflix.

I get the issues with The Get Down and Sense8 - both were runaway productions and at least one (The Get Down) went massively overbudget and became a BTS nightmare before any of it aired. But with Sense8 they at least bowed to pressure and did a wrapup movie. ODAAT has to cost a fraction of both of those and it can't get another season?

Call me crazy but I still think there’s hope for them. Their scenes today proved it to me. I loved how they were there for each other and talked about what’s going on with their fathers. And how Belle helped Shawn get a lead on Kevin’s roommate. Their relationship, at the moment, seems so natural. In a way, it reminds me of how Sami/Rafe were after they got divorced. And while I do like Shawn/Jada and EJ/Belle as couples, I’m looking forward to going along for the ride and (hopefully) seeing Shawn and Belle find their way back to each other. And I still think there’s hope for Gabi and JJ too. I don’t see them as an endgame couple but I do enjoy them together. Javi was a pain in the ass though and kinda messed up their scenes. And also messed up Gabi’s reunion with Arianna. Speaking of Arianna, I’m glad that she’s back in Salem. And she did have a point about Gabi and Javi. But yeah, Javi’s still a pain in the ass lol his scenes with Leo weren’t bad though, surprisingly. Mostly because they were centered around him and not Leo. That definitely wouldn’t have happened a few months ago It’s too soon to make any judgments about the actress playing Arianna but I’m looking forward to seeing her storyline. And to seeing the interactions that she has with other characters on the canvas. Hopefully, she won’t be friendly with the guy who tortured and sexually assaulted her fathers.  I also enjoyed Julie’s reunion with Doug III. Her being so stubborn and resistant today was classic Julie. I still kinda feel bad for Doug III though.
    • I have a new storyline for the "diverse" 7th Heaven reboot! The WASP family has a foster child called Gilberta. She's an AA kid whose mother is addicted to crack marijuana! The devil's seed! Either way, she's been integrated into this WASP family and shock/horror, Marijuana Mommy comes back! What will happen? Well, I will tell you - first it seems like Marijuana Mommy has her [!@#$%^&*] together and she gets her kid back! The WASPs are sad. Then it turns out that Marijuana Mommy is still on the dope and selling tricks talking to strange men on the corner! Plus, foster child (Gilberta) talks about how much she loves the WASPs. The episode ends in tears with Gilberta back with the WASPs! Also, Marijuana Mommy goes away, acknowledging how much better parents the WASPs are. The end. Why haven't The Great American Family hired me yet? I can feel the audience will watch this and cry a lot of tears.
    • I’m thinking Taylor’s resurrection a few months later caused the show to change course and cut her return short. If true, I wonder what the original plan for this storyline would have been? Amnesiac Ridge getting Morgan pregnant again?

    • re the penthouse.  I can't recall exactly but I think that it was used  for several years. Leslie moved to the cottage. Was that when she married Rick or before? Anyway, maybe Tracey took up residence? Don't know whether she bought it from Lesley, or they just re-used the set pretending it was a different place.
