Darla's backstory was never fully explained. After all, she was just a recurring character for most of her run with little to do. Except for a brief period in the early 90s and between 2003 and 2004 when she married Thorne, she never had any major screentime. Sometime in the early 90s, the audience got to know that she grew up in foster homes. When she became Sally's secretary, Sally kind of "adopted" her into the Spectra family.
