Y&R: Another Casting Call

Alden was smart in that she understood Bill's writing style.

A style that when even though stories took a long time to climax there was a lot of awesome character work that was done in between the major beats.

Jack Smith (like WorldTurner said) started the real damage by reducing complex stories to plot points & ridiculously catering to his pets at the expense of the show as a whole.

Bell wrote Mamie out (in what was I assume damage control because of the relationship with John getting a negative fan reaction). I remember being happy when she came back about, what, 4-5 years later, but then she never seemed to have a role.

Getting away from the is she/isn't she crazy debate, VR is a woman of a certain age. The days of her easily having a career in primetime/film are over.

I wonder, Dru's been gone for so long, it would be interesting to see how she'd fit back in. Is it possible this is one of those situations that would turn into "be careful what you wish for?"

I said this before, when Daniel and Lily had their site. DS wrote us or who write for her on the computer. She always ask what we wanted from Lily. Everything we didn't want from Lily, like a man defining her. They wrote for no goal, weak, having a man to define her CKLily.

She the first one who told us after Lily & Daniel got back together. She ask us do we think Daniel should cheat on Lily. We was surprise at her question. I mean they just got back together. Why would he cheat so early, especially after that Alex thing just be reveil.

Then she ask if Daniel and Lily broke up what would ya'll want Lily to do. & we all say think about her jewelry business, then maybe find somenody else. If she would have started up her jewelry business, Niel could have been over that.

My point Davetta care for the Lily character, & she knew Lily would be a role model for young black girls that are watching.

Really Carl? Phillip faking his own death to run away from his family's judgment was way too "out there" for you, and now you want to bring back a woman we saw fall off a cliff? In the case of Phillip, at least it's plausible that a kid with a bunch of money could pay off a doctor, it would ALSO explain the fact that after his "death" Nina had little to no money in the bank account (He withdrew it all in cash to pay the doctor) how would you explain Dru still being alive? Give her amnesia for 5 years after she washed up down the river? And whoever found her just HAPPENED to never publicize this "jane doe" that was found? Would you have her living in some commune with no memory of her former self? No matter how you slice it, it would be much more ridiculous to bring HER back than the Phillip back from the dead storyline was.

Because Carl... you can fake a heart monitor, but you can't fake falling off a cliff. If she WAS alive, how would you explain why this INTERNATIONAL MODEL was not recognized by anyone, the Jane doe's face wouldn't have been on the news? I'd like to know what scenario you could come up with that would be as believable as someone paying off a doctor and faking their own death. I mean, let's keep in mind that Katherine, Victor, Chance AND Paul all four faked their own deaths.

He didn't just fake a heart monitor, he played dead, never showing any sign of life while his family was with him. He then paid off doctors, a coroner, et al. All of this from a very mentally weak person who had never had any inclination to do all these schemes or plans.

They've done this type of thing over and over on soaps. Just say she had amnesia and say she was kept by someone. Maybe a fan who lives on a secluded island.

Sharon fell off the same cliff and survived, so Drucilla could as well. And it's not difficult to come out with a reason for her not being spotted. Depending on where she is, it might not matter that she was an international top model. Without the weave and the makeup and the expensive clothes, she could just be another black girl trying to make it in a tough world. Years ago I thought they should pair Neil and Victoria together, then have them go see the ballet and BAM--there's Dru. That would be a creative use of her past.

    • I think the arrival of the Spauldings (Alan/Elizabeth/Phillip) caused the erosion of Sara's character on the show since Elizabeth took over Sara's place in the whole Justin/Jackie story.  Sara's brief marriage to another deceptive man sounded like it paled in comparison to the previous deceptive man story that she had played the decade beforehand.. and it was probably done because of the whole Alan/Jackie/Mike/Elizabeth cluster that took off story wise.   I know the show had introduced Brandy, the woman Justin cheated on Jackie with... but I don't believe she lasted more than a year.. and didn't make much of an impression. While the Dobson's were good at writing/juggling multiple characters/stories.. they weren't perfect though they did manage to make use of characters not in the front burner like Sara, Ann, etc. I do know that Sara/Adam looked to be starting up at the end of the Dobson era with a jealous/regretful Barbara looking on.. which played out during the Roger/Holly rape story and Hollys prison story.   I don't know if Marland was as inspired by that story when he took over
    • If you ever make it to the Paley Center in NYC (fka Museum of TV and Radio), in their viewing room, you can watch Days 1/1/73 featuring Denise Alexander as Susan. It’s her last month on the show before switching to GH.
    • Overall I was impressed with this week and fall out from the revealation.  I am looking forward to seeing the Nicole/Dana showdown next week.  I do wonder if June is going to be tied to Hayley.
    • I thought Adam and Sara got married? Although I do not remember any mention of her when Adam returned for Blake's weddings. But MA certainly got the short end of the stick storywise, as Marland's obsession with therapy reared it's head.
    • Didn’t Meg Bennett return to SFT as a writer in the last few years. I always wondered if they tried to get her back as Liza.
    • Millette Alexander got the short end of the stick once they killed off Joe. The Justin thing was a non-starter. Then she was briefly married to Alan's corrupt lawyer and HE was killed off. She was paired briefly with Adam and that ended because she believed Holly over Roger about the rape. Definitely, Marland had zero interest in her except as the therapist for the many, many of his female characters who needed therapy. It's not odd she left the show. One of the rare 1978 episodes on YT shows Alan going to Cedars for a physical check-up. He ends up with Sarah as his doctor. In between making mysoginistic comments about women doctors, he also openly flirts with her. It's very obvious they were chem testing Sarah and Alan. It's a really good scene. Bernau is both obnoxious and charming and Millette is amazing, trying to be pleasant and profesional without rolling her eyes at him, but at the same time maybe a LITTLE bit attracted to him. An interesting what-might-have-been. So it appears the Dobsons were actively looking for someone to pair her with, they just never found the right one for a long-term story.

You've inspired me to add my 2 cents about this product placement debacle.  I absolutely HATE the way they are doing product placement in BTG. I really hope this doesn't catch on or evolve into more and more of these moments. It's incredibly off-putting to place them in a highly dramatic moment where we are still on the emotional journey with the character. What is next - Dani spraying the house while having a nervous breakdown? It makes me not want to buy the product they're selling. LOL. That's just me.
