Thanks Jason!

Wow it's crazy, Steve Olson, Julie’s brother returns to Salem 45 years later! probably and hopefully to support his sister during Doug's funeral. if tptb can get Denise Alexander to return, wow.. should be amazing and we can see some real flashbacks!

“As far as I know, next week I’m flying out to LA… I hope I’m not giving anything up but they’ve asked Steve Olson to come back for a couple of episodes. I’ll say no more than that.” Steve, the son of Addie Horton and her first husband, Ben Olson (her second marriage, to Doug Williams, produced daughter Hope), was originally played by Schnetzer from 1978-80.

Upon additional research, here's more info:

I checked the Christmas 1979 Soap Digest synopsis, and right after they detail the Stephen/Mary 12/25/79 scenes is this one sentence: "Bill informs Alice that Stephen flew to Paris after receiving an urgent phone call from someone in France."

The weekly newspaper for 12/31/79-1/4/80 notes: "Steve went to Paris."  (That looks like to have happened off-screen, with it, per Digest, being Bill who tells Alice about it).

Then, in the next Soap Digest issue (for January 1980 episodes): "When Trish learns that Stephen flew to Paris after receiving an urgent phone call from a man, she fears Stephen will tell Durant about the diamonds she stole from him. Trish worries what she'll do if Durant comes to Salem."   Then "When Julie mentions that Stephen took a cane with him to France, Mickey expresses puzzlement."

In February 1980, the character of Mimi (Stephen's smuggling partner) returns for 5 episodes: Mimi flies in from France and tells Trish that she has merchandise that belongs to Durant. Trish gives her the diamonds.

I do see the discrepancy between the final year of Schnetzer (most say 1980, while my records say 12/25/79). The Maureen Russell book says 1980, and I just checked the production notecards, which say 1/80. But, Stephen is not listed on any script, either in January 1980 or any episode in 1980. His last episode was 12/25/79. My guess is, since Russell worked off the weekly production cast charts, perhaps he was originally scheduled to appear in a January 1980 episode, or be part of the Mimi storyline in February 1980, but they ended up only using Mimi to finish out that storyline.

Russell compiled her cast list from 1965-1994 using the weekly cast charts, while I compiled my cast list from 1965-1983 by checking each and every script cast list (for the characters) (and for most of the 1965-1975 episodes, also the daily master telecast reports that Days had to submit to NBC for the actor names), and then from my own personal viewings of the episodes from 1984-present.

Maureen Russell does point out in her book that she has compiled the dates based on the TAPE dates of the production charts. So, technically, her dates are correct based on that. It's just that for the actors who finish taping in December of a certain year, they will continue airing into January of the next year. So, I did make those discoveries of which actors actually did that when getting all of the scripts.

    • And, to me it is a little bit hilarious that AW fans all over continue to refer to it as Egyptian Dust Recently elsewhere I've been running polls. When did you stop watching AW or What storyline caused you to stop watching AW. You may be interested to know that sticking it out till the bitter end is winning by a landslide. Next highest vote getter is - no surprise - Frankie's murder. So that covers like 60% & next 20%. Then the votes drop way down to 10% and well below but a wide array of reasons are given, including but not limited to  Justine Lumina Rachel having twins at her age, how ridiculous Mac's death the 90 minute show firing JC, George R & Dwyer Hmm, I know there are a few more, in the 1%-3% range but I cannot think of what they are. Sorry, my bad. Should have made notes but I didn't know I would be posting about it. LOL!!
    • A kind angel has added both episodes to the vault (UK Diva TV broadcast version).
    • Yes, I think that is the most likely situation.  TPTB were unhappy with the offer(s) they got from the tourism board in Finland, and decided the trip was going to be too expensive for P&G/NBC to finance alone.   I would also speculate a similar situation likely occurred a few years later with the planned location shoot in Egypt, which was also cancelled after the storyline had already started, and changed to Arizona.

    • In my usual account on my most used video hosting site with the video title  DAYS 1-8-15 Will & Paul Sex This is an edit I began when I was first teaching myself to edit & at that time I couldn't make it do what I wanted it to do. I pulled it up & finished it this morning.
    • Or Megan is shot as retaliation for Dave's unpaid gambling debts...while Julie confesses she's the biological mother of Special Guest Star Barry Bostwick's little boy.
    • Finland seemed such an odd choice for a location shoot. ATWT went to Greece and later Spain while GL had Tenerife and there were others in that timeframe. But Finland not being a known tourist destination or offering the tropical/sunny atmosphere usually associated with location shoots seems off brand. Maybe they were negotiating a deal with a tourist association and it fell through.
    • I was talking about 1986, but the glimpses of 1982 are about the same.
    • I skimmed some of the 1982 synopses; Steve was planning on an opening an office in Finland, and I think Jim went there as part of the preparation. That probably was a big issue; AW had already gone to San Diego that year, with Rachel/Steve/Mitch. And to upstate NY with Pete and Diana. I wonder if upstate was as expensive lol  AW in 1982 has always fascinated me, because of how messy it was
    • That makes sense. What a messy time for the show. And any changes they made were mostly for the worse.
