Reading that Ryan's Hope recap brought a tear to my eye! SOAPnet stopped in like 1981 or 1982, I forget which, but at that point the show was improving so much and there was so much to look forward to. Hell, I was looking forward to Kirkland's Hope! Sad to read that and know I can't watch it.

What's even sadder is how great these soaps were at this time, when they were being written by CAPABLE writers who knew that their audience was intelligent! At the same time, they knew how to string you along and pull you into the world of the soap! That's what I miss now! I think that writers can do it again, but they need to again rely on their veterans and integrate characters through them. Utilize the history of the show and characters. Fans really appreciate and respond to it. When reading this, I got misty eyed and thought about all those soaps that are no longer on but reading the storylines from 1983 just got me all excited as if I were about to watch them. I could see the characters and story playing out in my head. I could see the best filming quality and instrumental cues just going. I loved it! I believe that Edge of Night, Guiding Light, Ryan's Hope, Search for Tomorrow, Loving, and Capitol could still be on today! It makes no sense why those shows are not. Imagine the history now those shows would have accumulated. Imagine the many characters that would have graced the show by now. Imagine the many weddings, couples, families, romances, adventures, grand love stories that would have come out of all of them. OOOOOOOOOOO how I miss the time period of great WRITERS from back then! Where are they now?

I don't know, but I've heard from some that he wasn't successful on AW as he was on GL. I think his tenure as EP qualifies what AW was desrcibed in the 80s as being "the longest transition in the history of soaps" as in the show had a constant revolving door of Head Writers.

Reading over some stuff from LOVING, who were Rita Mae and Billy? I thought Jack turned out to be Dane Hammond's son. LOVING seems to be an inetrsting read though.

Was Henry Sleasar and Sam Hall's tenure on OLTL any good? It's hard to tell from these synopsis.

Billy Bristow was hired to work at Cornith University as the new football coach. Jack was the football star who had returned to Cornith from New Orleans to play for Cornith's team. Rita Mae, Billy's wife, was bored and hit on everyone she could. The first person she hit on was Jim Vochek, the local Catholic priest, before she ended up spending time with Curtis, who she thought was Jack. Billy and Rita Mae were around during Marland's tenure. Both of them suffered from fertility issues during their pursuit of having a child. Eventually, Billy left Rita Mae, moved back down south, and married a co-ed. Rita Mae stuck around and had a romance with younger man, Tony Perilli, after his aborted wedding to Stacey Donovan. Rita Mae had a niece, Colby Cantrell, who was a buyer for Burnell's, the department store the Aldens owned. Colby romanced Curtis and Keith Lane.

Jack did turn out to be Dane Hammond's son. I THINK the people referred to as Jack's seventy-year-old parents in this installment were later revealed to be his grandparents. Later, Jack spent time in mid-1984 searching for his biological father. Recently deceased Rita Lloyd played Millicent Whitehead, the aunt of one of the men Jack believed to be his father, but it was revealed her nephew was not Jack's dad. I believe Jack's maternal grandparents, Ada and Marshall, were embarassed by Jack's lower class father because Dane Hammond hailed from Milltown (the poor neighborhood in Cornith which also was home to the Rescott clan). Dane was furious with Ada and Marshall for keeping him from Linda (Jack's mother) and hiding the truth about their child. Dane played one of Linda's friends to claim to be Jack's mother, but later the truth came out.

Eddie Drueding's webpage says he was EP of AW from Spring 1983 to December 1984.

Among others, he brought Richard Culliton and Gary Tomlin as headwriters to the show.

Carl, Wallingford, Marley, and the McKinnons (Kathleen, M.J., Ben, Vince - not Jake) originated when he was EP.

Oh, my!! What memories! I have to say that at that time, although I was in High school... this was August and I got to watch every day. When I went back to school, I would fake sick ALOT... they allowed you 7 absences per quarter before they flunked you, so I always took all 7!!! That means 28 absences per school year... I usually timed them when we had a full 5 day week. I almost never went a full 5 day week in High School. When I DID have to go, my mother would put the cassette recorder in front of the TV speaker on a chair and tape the audio for me. I remember that episode where Lauren tried to drug Traci before she went onstage... SUCH SUSPENSE!! What I wouldn't GIVE to have that even on audio tape!!(this was the VHS era, SOMEONE has got to have it) I remember Traci wore this awesome cobalt blue dress with an empire waist and a tiered skirt. Then with Lauren passed out backstage, Traci went onstage with Danny and sang a duet of Anne Murray's "You Needed Me". And WOW was it good!! I always marveled at the bravery of Damian to sing on stage with a woman who vocally just blows him out of the water.

Was Maree Cheatam still playing Stephanie on SFT at this time?

I do love what Labine and Mayer did in creating RH and producing many beautiful moments, but I have to admit that I always have a visceral reaction to anything involving Siobhan once again mourning/pining for Joe (who would never, ever die, which meant any of her moving on would be pointless), or Delia wanting Frank/using Johnno to get Frank. They seemed to have a very limited view of Delia which really wasted the character. The only time she branched out, aside from her brief run at the Crystal Palace, was when Ilene Kristen only extended her contract if they would move Delia away from the weeping and misery and plotting. That led to the stock market story, which was one of her best.

On Y&R, this Cindy, was she April's twin?

Jazz, he was around for a few years, right? Was he the precursor to Nathan?

I always admired the way Bill Bell integrated music into the show for so long. I know by the end it was just Danny, sadly, but at least it was something different. I would say they should bring that back but it would just be about Amber. Unless they have Traci get a recording contract. She could go on a talent show for charity and then become a big hit.
