That version of Delia reminds me very much of today's Amber on Y&R.

I remember a big "huh" when Robin Mattson took over the Delia role. After Robin tore it up on GH, she seemed so utterly lackluster on RH.

Thank you for this. Now, it's funny, as I read these summaries I get a big "meh". Stories that really didn't tickle me across the board. For example:

Days: Killing Renee and Trista (big mistakes), and the rise of show-eater Eugene Bradford. He was basically the Spinelli of his day.

AMC: Devon and Wally (blech) and Nazis. 'Nuff said.

AW: I'm a bit confused about this one. Peter marrying Sally? Was this before or after his "grand" wedding to Cecile on the boat? And was this when Peter was still basically nice and milquetoast, or had he already turned evil? (Two actors turned him progressively darker...first was the guy who had played Kevin Bancroft on Y&R, and then that Marcus (?) fella who co-conspired with Reginald Love).

GH: Grant and Celia, Jackie Templeton. The glory days were DEFINITELY over! Although Celia and her cousin (Steve Bond) was definitely very hot.

OLTL: I did think Echo (played by Kim Zimmer) was the most ethereally beautiful woman I had ever seen on daytime. I hadn't watched The Doctors, so I just remember that distinctive voice and face. I thought she was incredible.

Y&R: Also looks like it was in a bit of a transitional state. I did think the conclusion of the Tony DiSalvo/Hot Hips storyline was campy fun--very "unusual tone" for Y&R. Of course, especially living in Canada, there was SO much publicity about Wayne Gretzky being a guest at the wedding between Nikki and Tony. I still remember Gretzky's line, after seeing Nikki: "I looks like Tony's got himself a good night's work, eh?" (Or something like that). Boobsie and Douglas were later fun.

RH: I watched that show, Loving too...but I really have no memory of any of that.

It being September, and probably predating my VCR ownership, I may simply not have been able to keep track of any of that. Probably the only ones of these shows I actively monitored by then were AMC (mom watched) and GH/Y&R (they aired when I got home from school/university). I'm sure my recollection of the Nazis on AMC and Echo on OLTL were mostly from the summer before this.

I was such a fan of Jon de Lancie on TNG. I can't imagine what he was like on DAYS to compare him to Spinelli

I always thought the Marlena/Eugene friendship sounded like so much fun. Fun is not a word I associate with Marlena.

Did you hear the story Julia Barr told about how she was in the dressing room with the guy who played Wally and he kept on telling her about how he was just a puppet, how much he hated the role of Wally, and he even painted dummy makeup on his face and said he was just a puppet. Poor Julia seemed horrified

I thought there were some clips on Youtube at one time, but I don't see them now. She was very good. The story went nowhere, and was mostly about her conning Bucky, and selling the demon weed, but she was a lot of fun. She used a very exaggerated mafia princess accent. She also had a very good entrance to the show. They seemed to have a lot more plans for her, and for Bucky, than ever materialized. Poor Justin Deas was stuck playing a talk-to for like 2 years. RH wasn't always great at recognizing proper talent.

I've never heard that about Ilene Kristen extending her contract for that reason, but she only extended for six months longer, and I think the groundwork was already laid for Delia to crash and burn and emerge stronger and saner, in any case. Delia was never an over-the-top Stefano DiMera type villain who would keep getting away with everything indefinitely, and Ryan's Hope was not the kind of misogynistic show that was going to endorse Delia's self-loathing behavior by having it pay off longterm. The groundwork was laid for her lies to be exposed, and there was foreshadowing for years that she was capable of more than using sex and babies and feigned helplessness to hang onto men. Even her archenemies had been saying things like, "Delia, why don't you put all of that energy you waste trying to get people to take care of you into something productive?" from almost the beginning of the show.

I would also argue that Delia did branch out during the last years of the show, when Ilene Kristen returned and Claire Labine was writing again. It was a little weird, because she was playing mother to a son who looked about 30 and interacting with all of these other Ryan relations who had been SORASed so drastically, but it still felt organic to the character of Delia while allowing her to do new things. The irony of Delia, in the last week of the show, convincing a younger man who was as desperate in his obsession with her as she had been in her obsession with the Ryan boys all those years before that he would get over it in time went unspoken, but it didn't need to be spoken. It was the perfect full circle.

A lot of those episodes are on YouTube now, posted by Freeflyur.

I would imagine after Luke and Laura, every ABC soap had a mandate to have an action-adventure supercouple, and Joe and Siobhan were the closest thing Ryan's Hope had to that, so a lot of the baggage had to be swept under the rug. Ironically, part of the baggage was what Joe had done to Jack, which as said previously was pretty ugly and which incidentally happened during the writers' strike - the same writers' strike that gave us Luke and Laura saving the world from freezing. If the RH scabs hadn't run so completely amok in such a completely different way than the way the GH scabs run amok that summer, perhaps Joe and Siobhan as star-crossed lovers wouldn't have been so jarring. Because, yes, Sarah Felder and Richard Muenz were lovely together - and, indeed, he looked hot in that speedo.

I think they exhausted a lot of story possibilities for Delia in the early '80s very quickly, because Randall Edwards wasn't as able to play and/or the show was moving away from the more subtle, character-based scenes and stories. Even after she grew up a little, Delia was still quite capable of being miserable from time to time - and making other people miserable from time to time - while in a relatively happy marriage to Roger and with a successful business venture. As it was, though, Delia had already lost Roger and two fortunes and gotten away with attempted murder by the time Ilene Kristen returned. Her knack for commodities was one quirky thing that I could swallow - plus it was based in the character's history as it started with Maeve's tea leaves - but by that point, her latest business was essentially a thinly veiled version of the Tavern on the Green. You can have a character own the most expensive restaurant in Pine Valley or Port Charles and still cross paths with the more down-to-earth characters, but this was Ryan's Hope set in New York City. It's understandable that something drastic had to be done with the character to bring her back to her roots, before she snowballed any further into a character too larger-than-life to fit on this show anymore. But yes, seeing a character who had come so far go back to living with the Ryans and using her son to manipulate Frank was pretty jarring and not pleasant to watch. It was also a weird time for the show. Ilene Kristen has spoken about having medical problems at the time that caused her to lose weight, and the head of ABC daytime was not kind about it. Ilene apparently went weeks without being onscreen, before finally being fired around the same time Labine and Mayer were forced out. They may have had more in mind for Delia that got overridden in the power struggle going on. Still, there were some well-done moments in that era that made it good to have IK's Delia around - the scene in which Judith Chapman's Charlotte Greer tried to convince Delia that she was telling the truth about being Frank's long-lost wife and get her on her side was truly fascinating to watch.

In hindsight, I think they should have had Delia leave NY, at least for a little while, when Ilene Kristen left the first time in 1978. At that point she had lost both Ryan boys, and was starting to come into her own. She didn't need to marry Roger right away. She should have gotten an appointment to the commodities exchange commission or whatever and moved to Washington or something, and continued her growth off-camera. Then she could have come back to NY a year or so later, ready to have a relationship with Roger, who could have met someone else while she was away, and there could have been a triangle with a stronger, more independent Dee who still remembered how to fight dirty. But, at the time, that probably seemed like such a risk: not to have any Delia on the show, when for 3+ years virtually every conflict on the show that was not derived from the characters' own internal hang-ups was driven by Delia. It would have been weird to suddenly not have that dynamic at all. And, it was nice that Ilene got to be the Delia who married Roger; I think it could have just as easily been Ilene who went on to stardom in other genres, like Kate Mulgrew. If she had never been seen again on Ryan's Hope, it would have been fitting that she got to play out Delia's happy ending. But, she did come back, and I sure could not imagine those last years of the show without her, but by the time Randall Edwards had left, the character had been through so much that it could be argued there was nothing much left to do with her except back up a little.

Was this before or after Marland did that racy cable soap with Jane Elliot in it?

RH: A little off topic, but was the character of Delia around for Tom King and Millee Taggart? I've always wondered about their tenure on RH, since Taggart's tenure on GL from 2002-2003 has been favorited by many fans(including me).

DeliaIrisFan, I haven't seen those episodes yet, I keep meaning to watch them. I wish I'd amended to say that I'm only basing my opinion of Delia up to around 1983.

I had very mixed feelings, which turned to anger later on, with the frequent portrayal of Delia as this obsessive, pathetic baby who only lived for a man, because, while I could believe early on that the Ryans had to put up with Delia, I had a hard time believing it after 4-5-6 years. I think it became more and more about the Ryans coming across like they were masochists, or like they had to look down on Delia in order to feel better about themselves. It didn't help that I thought most of the Ryan family, besides Frank and Maeve, became difficult to sympathize with, so I just couldn't see them as the good people I saw when the show started. Johnny I never saw the same way again after he gambled the bar away, and then tried to tell Delia it was all her fault. And Roger became such a dull, self-righteous scold, to me, around 1979-1981. I just think so many characters lost their spark. I haven't seen much beyond 1981 but I can see why new producers in 1984 felt like they needed to fire some cast members (although Louise Shaffer I would not have chosen) and revamp the program. It seems they didn't do a great job of it. Or perhaps ABC was done with the show by then anyway.

I think what I also disliked over time was how the writing used Delia more and more as this prop. Early on, when Frank and Jill or Pat and Faith had problems, they were beyond just Delia. It wasn't simply wicked or dumb Delia. Later on this seemed to happen more. Or they used her to try to make us like new characters, which is guaranteed to make me go the other way. Like when EJ Ryan showed up, and immediately they had to have all these scenes where Delia was obnoxious and EJ and Roger smugly put her in her place. Maureen Garrett is one of my favorite soap actresses but I did not warm to that character.

I also had mixed feelings about the writers strike, because I felt like they got rid of some of the wrong characters (I liked Rose, and Barry was a very unique presence), but I also appreciated them writing out the Michael character. I know Claire Labine described that as a younger man/older woman love story, but I saw it as a slick user, and Rae once again being played the fool by her daughter. I also never got past Michael kidnapping Siobhan, which led to her having a miscarriage. I thought Michael was expendable, it's just that some of the aftermath, like Kimberly's out of nowhere pregnancy (didn't we only find out about this pregnancy in like the eighth month?), was a mistake.

I thought the story where Joe systematically destroyed Jack's life was a real showcase for Michael Levin, but the problem with this was the ending didn't involve Joe being written out, which is what should have happened. I don't even remember if Siobhan ever found out the whole truth.

I appreciate what you're saying about why they had to do what they did with Delia. Sometimes I think I'm much too biased in my feelings for some of the characters on RH. I really did care a lot about the show, especially when they were at their best. I'm glad Delia had better stories when Ilene returned for the last time. I'll have to watch some of that.

So this was when Hope Bauer had her alcoholism story. Is it true that they just did this, and then fired her, as some lesson for the other cast members?

I didn't know this was when Carol Robbins first appeared. She was a very inspiring character. Bill Bell was often accused of being preachy but he did what a lot of other soap writers never bothered with, and he made viewers care.

What is with Kim Zimmer and bridges...

Barber appeared on "Ryan's Hope" three times. Once as a nurse, once as a reporter, and finally as Pamela Thatcher, co-star and rival of Barbara Wilde on "The Proud and the Passionate." Her character had been married to Maggie's brother (Maggie was the character Barbara Wilde played on the soap). In terms of look and mannerism, I could see how Barber would be picked to temp for Strasser. I found Barber a bit theatrical in the way I find Strasser often plays Dorian.

I thought Daniel Hugh Kelly and Karen Gowdy Morris had lots of chemistry. I loved them rollerskating in the Coleridge living room, recalling memories on the stoop of the Coleridge brownstone, and sharing ice cream at Greenberg's deli. I thought the Jill/Faith/Frank storyline was deliciously messy and was truly nasty. Delia getting jealous was great only because Little John actively plotted to reunited Frank and JILL. I thought Delia was going to DIE when little John started plotting like Mommy Dearest. Do you remember LJ remembering how Jill and Frank had found him in the park when he disappeared as a toddler? So LJ ran off to the local park, and when he wasn't found fast enough he called home asking where the family why they hadn't found him yet.

Morris Gowdy was gold when Frank broke up with her and she went on a tirade telling everyone off. Frank screwed her royally and it was nice that someone other than Delia admitted the Ryans were assh$#%$# to anyone who wasn't in the inner circle.

Yep. The Vargas/Jo storyline is featured in these synopses.

Marcus Smythe played Peter Love. Smythe previously appeared as Dane Taylor, Sunny's suitor, on "Search for Tomorrow."

According to online sources, the cast of RH was too big at the time so characters were cut. Nick, Reenie, and Sam were all written out in a quick swoop. Also that older couple, Beatrice Mills and Hector disappeared after playing a part in Mary and Jack's romance.

Don't forget Reenie feigning fascination with the llapa apso breed so that she could connect to Bucky's socialite mother Diana Carter.

A true hidden gem. Thanks for bringing that poster up.

I'm not clear on what you mean. Joe's plot involving the company and Ron Tomme's character was all written by Labine and Mayer. The Writer's Strike focused on the more plot driven stuff involving the dock work who dated Lori, Rose Melina's old high school buddy. But, yeah, I can see the adventure element, but I still don't see the appeal. Conceptually, I get it, but I don't like it.

I disagree. I remember after the Writer's Strike ended Delia discovered the camera hidden in Joe's office at the Crystal Palace. I remember Edwards Delia attempting to manipulate Joe with the information very coyly and very aware of what she was doing in a calculating, cunning manner. Edwards' Delia was usually naive and gullible, but she nailed the more cunning Delia.

Was this before or after Marland did that racy cable soap with Jane Elliot in it?

After. "A New Day in Eden" aired its final episodes on Showtime in August 1983. PRISM aired the final episodes in September 1983.

RH: A little off topic, but was the character of Delia around for Tom King and Millee Taggart? I've always wondered about their tenure on RH, since Taggart's tenure on GL from 2002-2003 has been favorited by many fans(including me).

Yes. They brought her back in September 1986.

Taggert and King later penned "Loving" after the 1988 Writer's Strike until 1991 when Mary Ryan Munisteri wrote for an instant. Later Taggert wrote from September 1992 until November 1993 when she left due to illness. She and Guza won a Writer's Guild award for their work in 1992 or 1993, but honestly I suspect it was more do to individual episodes than long term story, which was very weak.

I thought the story where Joe systematically destroyed Jack's life was a real showcase for Michael Levin, but the problem with this was the ending didn't involve Joe being written out, which is what should have happened. I don't even remember if Siobhan ever found out the whole truth.

Siobhan learned the truth at Joe's birthday party at the Crystal Palace. It was staged so that Siobhan would learn the truth. She saw Ron Tomme's character and Joe talking about the plot and she was devastated. She went to the priest about annulling their marriage afterwards.

Rose Alaio was amazing. Why no soap kept her long term is a mystery. Barry departed when Labine & Mayer returned. I liked Barry, but I think his story was only going to go so far. He should have made him Ken George Jones' murderer motivated by their secret love for one another.

Kim's pregnancy was bad not only because we learned about it in its' seventh month, but that during those seven months, Kim had been hospitalized TWICE: once for being mickeyed at a party and once for catching pneumonia when Michael locked her out on the balcony while he and Rae listened to opera. It was such a joke. I did love Kim aborting her first pregnancy and then running into the Riverside ER claiming she had just miscarried. God, I love how all the pregnancy drama with Kim played out. Remember the special curtain lunch at Lem's where Jill (lunching with Roger) heard Kim admitting all her crimes to Rae on the other side of the curtain. Then the cliffhanger wedding where Jill interrupted Seneca and Kim's "I dos" I love Ryan's Hope in the 1980s.
