Thanks for keeping this going. I never knew Traci was involved in undercover police work :o Hire her now, Genoa City PD! She has to be more experienced than Chance.

So this wasn't too long before Bill and Susan Hayes quit DAYS? I see that the story he hated (the one with Bill as the angry father) is starting.

This Maxie on OLTL, that was the Christine Ebersole character, right? The one who also worked as Marco's secretary?

RH, poor poor poor Faith has to leave Pat because she has no privacy  This is the woman who went between brothers in the first place. So tiresome.

Yes... the episode where Jill visits Katherine and then confides in Liz that she's sure Kay is behind Dina staying in town is the first episode of Brenda Dickson's return (I stayed home from school for THAT one) I had remembered it as being November... but it was obviously October... must have been pretty late in the month, though, as Brenda was wearing that fake lynx coat in her first scene. (Apparently, she hated it... she said it looked like a cotton ball... no wonder she dind't take it with her)

I really regretted Brenda's return, because I was truly over-the-moon in love with Deborah Adair. I just loved that sexy purr in her voice, and how she'd classed up Jill.

I was really regretting Brenda, because I didn't think she'd fit into the new image of Jill. But then she fit in beautifully--different from Adair--but as what Dickson called "streetfighter in silk". I ended up really liking Dickson, but I don't really miss her.

In my view, Jill is one of the most successfully multiply recast roles on daytime. Has any other role had three or more successful recasts? Maybe Tom Hughes on ATWT...but I won't count most of those incarnations as "successful".

Streetfighter in silk. I love that. It's so perfect. I miss that side of Jill :(

I haven't seen enough of the 80s RH but Frank Ryan was generally recast well. Andrew Robinson was quirky and intense, Daniel Hugh Kelly was EVERYTHING Frank was supposed to be, so much so that you'd think he was there from the start, and the little I've seen of the 80s Franks seemed to fit the same stolid bill, albeit slightly duller.

Kevin Buchanan has had some dreadful recasts but Kevin Geiger, Kevin Stapleton, and Dan Gauthier were all good to downright flawless. It sucks that most people are more likely to remember sh!tty recasts like Tim Gibbs, or remember how much the show hated Kevin during most of Gauthier's run.

Dorian Lord -- Claire Malis, Robin Strasser, Elaine Princi, then Robin again.

I couldn't stand Andrew Robinson. (I didn't know his name, but I know instantly who you mean). Daniel Hugh Kelly was the bomb! Geoffrey Pierson, who followed him, wasn't bad either. The first Frank (brunette) was kind of a dud. It's amazing RH sustain so many recasts of its core. Thus, in my view, not all these recasts were successful.

Dorian Lord was also played by Nancy Pinkerton, right? Was this before or after Malis. I can't say I liked Princi...I get the same vibe from her that I do Marj Dusay..."thespian"

RH had many, many bad recasts. They recast like mad. Carolyn Hinsey claimed the show would still be on the air if not for all the recasts, and as much as I dislike her, she does have a point. Recasts really killed Mary, and greatly weakened Pat as well as Faith. Some would say the same about Delia, although I blame that more on the writing. Sometimes the recasting was just a frenzy - in 1978, there were 2 Pats and 3 Nancy Feldmans, and it seemed like they would change faces every week that summer.

The first Frank, who was eventually fired because he couldn't remember his lines (him being so wooden didn't help) was supposedly only cast because he was a soap "name" and Frank was never supposed to live. Then ABC made them keep Frank around, so they were stuck with the guy for like a year and a half.

Dorian was originated by Nancy. Then Claire took over, then Robin, then Elaine, then Robin again.

I really like Elaine's Dorian. She's very dramatic and actressy, but so is Robin. The main difference is that Robin gets down to a visceral gut level, which Elaine did not, but for the more surface Dorian of that era, I think Elaine was a good fit. When she had the Blair story, she did a good job. I also like little clips like this, or her frenemy relationship with Viki.

I think Sam was wheelchair boud wasn't he? I believe that was the big crisis in Kelly and Claire's relationship. Claire was committed to making sure her brother was happy and wasn't sure she could commit to anyone else other than Sam. In the episodes I saw, Sam wasn't seen but Claire was devoted to him. Maybe Claire blamed herself for Sam's accident? I think Sam was the reason she became a doctor.

MarkH, I don't remember what thread it's in, but I was also saying how Elaine Princi reminds me of Marj Dusay... it's that HAUGHty VOcal inFLECtion thing they do. I like Elaine, comparing and contrasting her to Robin, they each have their strengths and weaknesses. I think Robin is better at playing the neurotic, and she's more facile with language... she makes more interesting choices with the text. IMO, she was at the top of her game when she was fresh from L.A., reclaiming the role in '93. She is so smooth, so GOOD, now she is almost cloying some days... let's drop all the cooky French [!@#$%^&*]. Check out some of those scenes she has with Jason, or Sloane and Viki, a totally different, sexier, more awesome character. Like Erica Kane's sophisticated big sister.

Elaine is much better at playing the pastels. IMO, Robin doesn't handle the soft mushy stuff as well, and she'll say that's a character choice (and she's obviously a sensitive woman in real life), but Elaine has a certain warmth in emotional moments that doesn't come as easily to Robin. In that moment where she realizes Addie's still alive, I picture Robin playing that more screechy and not being as effective at making us feel sorry for little tortured Dorian. Elaine's take on Dorian's more neurotic qualities dips into Philece Sampler Donna Love histrionics at times, stereotypical rich society bitch. I think Elaine is SO MUCH more effective when she plays it sorta deadpan, like here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vSvSXjgTkY, the way she saunters over and just lays it all out for Viki. THAT's her note, that to me is where the dark side of her Dorian should live, and there's where I see the perfect balance of Nancy Pinkerton's icy austere Dorian and Robin's fiery glam Dorian.

I don't think the recasts had any negative effects on Ryan's Hope. When the timeslot was switched for Loving the show was dead regardless of the content of the show. The immediate drop in the ratings proved that. RH had a lot of recasts yes, but I thought they were generally very good.

Siobhan - Sarah Felder was brilliant in the role and I believe she was fired right? Such a shame, but Ann Gillespie was good in the role and although I don't like her, Marg Helgenberger made the role a huge success. The next recast I haven't heard anything about, but the final one, Barbara Blackburn got good reviews. Unfortunately the show was canceled so she didn't get to do much in the role.

Mary - The first recast was amazing. She looked just like Helen Gallagher and had great chemistry with the cast. Unfortunately, Labine didn't want to recast so I feel she sabotaged the recasts. Mary Carey (the first recast) never was given a chance. The next one was just dreadful and the final Mary was decent, but by that time you could tell the writers weren't invested in the character.

Pat - Eh, this is the one role that was never succcessfully recast. All the recasts were terrible.

Frank - I honestly didn't have any problems with any of these recasts either. All were better than the original.

Delia - Ilene Kristen and Randall Edwards both did an excellent job in the role. No troubles here either.

Faith - I don't think Karen Morris Gowdy was a bad recast, just the character began so unlikable. This is another character that improved with recasts.

If anything truly killed RH it was all the silly writing changes once ABC bought the show and the timeslot murdered the show.
