DAYS FANS REJOICE!

Days of Our Lives has been renewed!

An inside source has revealed exclusively to Daytime Royalty that NBC and Sony have worked out a 2 year deal that will keep "Days Of Our Lives," NBC's longest-running daytime drama, on the air through May 2011. No details of the deal or when the announcement will be made public, but expect it very soon.

The show will celebrate its 43rd anniversary on Nomember 8, 2008.

Congratulations to the cast and crew!

Let me quote myself here because I want people to hear this and I am an egomaniac:

Frankly, I say give the show to Michael Malone. Malone is a great writer who often fails without safeties in place, but even without any safeties, at his most OTT on OLTL or AW (Mitch, ghosts, cursed diamonds, dreams, psychic powers, cursed mummies, etc), he is still more down to earth and family oriented than any other Days writer in over ten years. He could provide a mix of whimsical fantasy, operatic action and intrigue, and family drama and make people who watch Days for any and all of those happy. His plotting for OLTL in 2003 and 2004, while wretched for us OLTL fans, would have worked well at DAYS IMO.

You apparently haven't read the 70s ratings archive thread.

    • My guess is that ABC ended up getting younger viewers (high school and college aged) that didn't want to watch soaps that their parents watched (which were P & G).
    • Late 1970s was ABC huge rise and P&G shows tanked. Did viewers suddenly switch over from P&G to ABC, or did ABC get a whole bunch of new viewers? Y&R was going strong in the late 1970s but would stumble in 1980 after expanding to one hour and changing time slots.
    • Agnes Nixon saved Another World from being canceled in the late 1960s and it rose to No. 2 in the ratings defeating General Hospital in the time slot.   When ABC saw what Agnes Nixon did with AW and what happened to GH, ABC approached Nixon to create a soap for ABC....One Life to Live debuted in January 1968 and Nixon finished up her headwriting duties at AW.  Then based on OLTL's performance, ABC wanted another soap. Agnes presented All My Children to ABC and the rest is history.   AW was near the top of the ratings from the late 1960s until its collapse in 1979 with GH's giant rise.
