RIP Ann. We are losing our legends left and right, but the older we get, the more we'll keep losing them. It causes me to think about the soap world, shows I watched and didn't, those gone before I was born, actors, actresses, behind the scenes writers/ producers/etc, characters and stories. I'm so happy to have been introduced to soaps and throw myself into this world. I'm sad when they pass, but so happy that I got to know them and their work.

What I learned from this episode:

Today's soaps have no imaginations.  They claim their budget cuts prevent them from having multiple sets, so everyone now congregates in empty restaurants.

At the 8:30 mark, we see an apartment for Mady Kaplan's (recurring) character.  The "set" is created with a table, a lamp, a telephone, a chair, and a backdrop of a window.  Total cost -- about $2.

At 8:40, we see Chris Goutman's (recurring) character calling from a supply room at the Rexford Clinic.  That set consists of a bulletin board and a white medical coat hanging from a metal locker.  Total cost -- about $2.

I find it difficult to believe today's shows can't slap together a workable set like this for a quick interaction or a phone call.

"The Edge of Night" had probably the lowest budget in daytime, but they created sets that worked, using minimal materials.

And the writing was so strong from day to day that viewers hardly paid attention to the sets; however, once hack Lee Sheldon took over, the show as flat and ugly. It was painful to get through an episode. It's all in the writing and directing, acting, costumes etc.  But....P&G and ABC could have freed up a few dollars in 1981 to support EON getting updated sets (especially when GH was at its peak viewership/Nov 81).

I'm always amazed at what EDGE accomplished on so little.  If they needed a one-off diner set, they set up a counter, two stools, a cash register, and a coffee pot.  Instant diner.

The next scene might be set in some exclusive French restaurant that we'd never see again, and it was just a booth against a wall with a blue light shining on it.

A dead body might pop up in an alley that was nothing more than a garbage can and a brick wall.

As mentioned above, the dialogue was tight, the camera angles were tight, and there was generally a quick cut-to-black, so it didn't matter much about the surroundings.

    • So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.
    • The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.
    • I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.
    • Mac Scorpio and Kevin Collins, GH

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
    • I also never understood Alex's friendship with Sonni or keeping the secret of Marah's paternity.  Not exactly heartbroken about Ms. Sally being ushered to the Hereafter.
