A preview video's been released today for the tram crash. It's quite lengthy so if you're avoiding spoilers, give it a miss.

It looks like the guy who plays Eddie Windass is leaving the show. The reasons haven't really been given yet but this is what the actor Tweeted:

"Seen as the News Of The World will be publishing it on Sunday, thought I'd let you know first that I'll be looking for work come March time"

"Thanks for all the concern. Can't really say much more. I'm sure the NOTW will explain."

Quite a shock in the top 50 character poll; it looks like Gail wasn't even in the top 50.

Mavis, surprisingly, managed to get in, pretty high on the list, even though she's been gone for over ten years and is now mostly known for saying she doesn't like the show. I really liked Mavis, so I'm happy. I just wish Jerry Booth or Ray Langton could have made it.

I hope some of you will review the big stunt episodes they are doing this week to tell me if they're worth getting through. I'm going to need a positive review to sit through Grampa Nick.

Interview with the effects supervisor.

I think he came from Doctor Who, as did the director, Graeme Harper, and of course Collinson. BBC has less of a budget so they must be like kids in a candy store.

He seems very popular at Digital Spy's soap forums, and the ratings are up somewhat, so I guess he's doing fine.

I think generally the male producers also get a little more leeway. Not always (like with Kirkwood right now in Eastenders) but Lucy Allan, Anita Turner, and Louise Berridge got some tough reactions from the boards and some of the press.

Well I thought elements of tonight's episodes were fantastic.

The tension was built up incredibly well and Tyrone finding out about the baby was surprisingly moving. It's very unusual for EE or Corrie to make stylistic editing choices but it worked for this - cutting between a fight in the Joinery/the hen night/Sally and Tyrone/Molly and Kevin/Rita before the explosion.

The negatives:

-Some of the CGI was a little ropey but nowhere near as bad as the DS forums are suggesting. Probably only two shots that were on the cheap side out of the bunch and the jacknife into the Kabin looked relatively realistic.

-There was an awful lot of foreshadowing in the first episode. Too cheesy for my taste.

-John Stape killing Charlotte. Is there a woman on the street who hasn't been married to a psycho?

-Rita's involvement was quite...bizarre.

Two episodes.

Sylph, Kim Crowther is another who, while a terrible producer, I think got some extra criticism based on gender. Collinson has continued many of her worst stories and made some of the stories somehow even worse , yet he is praised for them.

James F - someone posted the crash on Youtube. I actually don't think the effects look bad. The only change I would have made is to just end on someone unconscious, and not Ken or Stape looking into space. I expected one of them to start singing.

    • Right. Literally for decades, soaps mesmerized their audiences with tales of romance, family conflict, class struggles, and recognizable interpersonal-relationship sagas. We didn't need relentless, heavy violence. We didn't need clones, mad scientists, extra-terrestrials and demon possessions. We didn't need gaggles of plastic himbos and bimbos pushing beloved vets off-screen. We only needed to see people whom we cared about, and the intelligent, moving progression of their lives. Flashy sets, gaudy gimmicks, and high-falutin' hairdos be damned. The characters and the words were important.
    • Absolutely! Brad should've simply moved on from Lunacy. There's no point of freeing her, if you're not going to at least make an attempt at redemption or incorporating her into the fold. It happened with Quinn, who committed quite a few felonies before become the Forrester Matriarch.  Heck, keep Lunacy in prison and have Poppy/Finn discover that she gave birth to twins - 'Sunny' could've come on with a clean slate and still had Sheila/Finn and all the other drama. It certainly couldn't have been worse than what we've witnessed with the destruction of $B.
    • I would enjoy it if Swan popped up on BTG as an old one time friend/mentor of Anita’s for a cameo. This is just

    • I had totally forgotten that Courtney story. I see Burton was already phoning it in by that point.
    • omg I completely missed that, but now when I see it typed here in your post, it's obvious icky cringe. So now I just checked and Tomas said that -- on May 27 that he likes the author Carl Ivati.  He said it with sort of an accent, so I didn't catch the stupid joke or think about the spelling.   I remember when that aired, that I actually said to myself at the time, "I wonder if that's a Latin American author, and I will have to google him later." And now I see your post, and I see. Well that's cringe, and I feel stupid to have fallen for it.

    • There's a lot you don't need if you have the writing.  You don't even need large casts!  You could make do with a cast of 12-18 actors if the writing is there.
    • Thank you. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with sleeping around if your spouse actually knows about it. She’s just a cheating slut.
    • OMG...Robert Mandan! And Donna Mills is a child. I keep hoping for more of early Ross/Vanessa.
    • I get your point, but I also know that if the roles were reversed -- if a man were screwing around on a woman this way -- everyone would be all "All with his head!" When I say Vanessa needs therapy, I'm actually being kind, because I could begin and end with the fact that she's a cheating slut.
    • Is nobody going to mention the cringefest that is 'Carl Ivati'?
