PSNS: The Passions Challenge and a little ranting

Featured Replies

First off, I am not trying to single anyone in particular out, and I'm not trying to start a fight. :) I hardly ever rant about things, but I think this is a good cause...

Everything I read sounds like this "The show is horrible, It needs to be cancelled, Sheridan's being destroyed, I'm going to stop watching" blah blah blah :P:lol:

All I ever see is Passions trashing, there's hardly ever anything positive said about the show. (I know some people will say "because there's nothing positive about it" so I'll go ahead and say it for you, so you don't have to waste your time replying to what you think is a horrible show. LOL) Do you guys even watch the show? or Do you base your comments on reading spoilers rather than whats being played out on screen? Do you just ride the 'I hate Passions' bandwagon because everyone else does? Have you tried to be spoiler free and watch the show?

Now I will be the first one to admit, the show is nowhere near as good as it once was, but it's not as bad as it could be either. Passions gets a bad rap for being a campy, slow moving dramedy instead of a traditional character based soap. IMO it's one hour of great entertainment in with you don't have to have big expectations, other than enjoying the ride.

I think Errol said it best on DTS Livewire the other night... "Passions is currently more entertaining than ATWT or OLTL" and for him to say that, it's one of the biggest compliments the show could get LMAO

I've also talked to a few people who haven't watched Passions for years and they are actually watching again. It seems that all these big secrets are coming out during the next few weeks and I am cautiously excited. I know there may be no resolutition, but I do know that Liza (Gwen) is going on maternity leave very very soon and I think the truth will come out. JER usually writes great stuff in Dec-Feb

So onto my point. I am asking everyone to watch Passions spoiler free for 2 weeks and see if your mind changes? That's it! 2 weeks (10 little episodes) of viewing to see if going SPOILER FREE will change your mind about the show.

I agree with it all Rick. I would even go as far to say there are several other shows that the show is more entertaining than right now.

I would take your challenge a little further. Watch Passions like I do - with no expectations. When I watch Passions I don't expect out of it what I do other shows. When I watch Gilligan's Island I don't expect Lost - it is not a show like that. It is meant to entertain.

Passions I view in the same way. I don't expect great drama. I just watch it to be entertained, and I always am.

I CAN'T take your PASSIONS challenge Rick. As much as I respect you and your love for PASSIONS, I just can't.

I gave the show three months in the very beginning and realized it wasn't for me. As many reasons as I have for hating PASSIONS(slow paced, unoriginal, and SO 1993), those reasons make it so easy to jump on the bandwagon of haterade.

I LIKE campy soaps. I was a huge SUNSET BEACH fan, I like the MyNetworkTV shows, and THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL has been my popcorn love since freshman year of college. But the difference, IMO, between those shows and PASSIONS is that I truly believe Jimmy Reilly writes PASSIONS with a blatantly obvious Conservative bias and I also believe Reilly thinks, as a writer, his [!@#$%^&*] doesn't stink.

As much as I bash the show, I think there are good things about it, most of those good things being the acting and the actors.

I'm in LOVE with Liza Huber, Ben Masters, Kim Ulrich, Andrea Evans(among others) and have a valid artistic appreciation for Lindsay Hartley's acting ability(her character, on the other hand...). Now, I must add that there are LOTS of stinkers in the PASSIONS cast, but it isn't as bad as a lot of people think. I just don't think the talent is being challenged enough.

I watch every now and again, being the soap opera junkie that I am. If all soaps are pre-empted except the NBC ones, that's when I watch PASSIONS, because I'd rather watch PASSIONS than no soap at all.

I can't invest time in a soap that has disappointed me before. Not to mention a soap that I personally feel has very little to bring to daytime viewers except more stereotypes about soaps AND about people in general.

I do call for the cancellation of the show, not because I hate the show, but because I feel there is no hope for it in the long run. If the plot has BARELY moved in the 7 years it's been on the air, what happens if the show is lucky enough to reach the 20 year mark and Reilly is still alive and kicking enough to write it? Will the plot *EVER* move forward?! Or will Ethan still be choosing between Theresa and Gwen, with neither one of them moving on or getting out of that storyline?

Well, to answer your question, yes, I do watch PASSIONS. This is why I can say the show sucks. It's not like I want to bash the show or have it be cancelled, but there is only so much as a fan that I can take before I have to give up on defending it. I've sat through crap storylines for years hoping the show might get better, and with the exception of a brief return to greatness (2004-July 2005), it hasn't. Rather, the show has deteriorated into an unrecognizable mess. What once was a light-hearted soap has now become JER's perverted vision of rapes, prostitution, cutting, and more rapes. Personally, that's not something I want to waste an hour of my life 5 days a week watching.

I need to also add Rick, that my assessment is not to take away from PASSIONS or its fans. At the end of the day, I'd rather someone be watching ANY soap than none at all.

I try not to say things like, "Who would watch this [!@#$%^&*]," or "Man, why do PASSIONS viewers torture themselves?" I rey to avoid saying these things because that is what people say about soaps in general a lot of times and it's really discouraging to the genre(even though I think if someone who has never seen a soap before watches PASSIONS, they would get a very different view of soaps).

Different strokes for different folks. I'll still have my opinion but try to be more respectful of PASSIONS fans.

I am going to ponder this greatly. I keep going back and forth so I will think about it a bit.

I am fed up with Passions, yes, and say it should be canceled if they never fix it, because of it's stories. They are boring, and some just terrible not in the bad storyline way but the way like Sheridan possibly hiring Spike to rape Fancy. That's her own niece!

Yeah, some things I say come from spoilers. And I really should hold my judgement sometimes.

But, the most reason why I am so anti-Passions lately is because of it's degrading of women. It constantly has some brutual rape going on and I'm sick of it, it is a sickening and terrible to woman.

Rick, I will gladly take on your challenge to watch Passions spoiler free, because I already LOVE the show. I think a lot of people unfairly bash the show without truly watching it. Passions does have its faults, but the current Passions of the last couple of months has been really good. I actually look forward to each episode. But I will take it one step further now and watch it spoiler free for two weeks to see if I love it more.

I love Passions, and it's been highly entertaining in the last few months. I loooove reading the spoilers--it adds to my enjoyment of the show! I can't wait for every Thursday when new SOD/SOW spoilers are posted. :)

I like my spoilers too. They don't ruin anything for me, and they let me know when my favorites are going to be on.

I must say that as of late I have been watching the entire show, and not just skipping to my favorite characters, I never thought that would happen, but the storylines that were repetitive are still repetitive (that would be all of them), the list of characters I can't stand and who disgust me remains the same (SPIKE), the list of characters whom I am merely annoyed with has waivered (I'm a little less grossed out by Fancy, and I am enjoying her being unconscious.), the lousy actors on the show are still lousy (Miguel, Fox), the gems of the show are still great (Ivy, Julian, Rebecca, Tabitha, Endora) and Sheridan gone bad is a new twist that finally has me interested in that triangle.

I think the show is better in a lot of ways, but just as frustrating as ever, I still watch it more than I've been watching any other soap. I couldn't sit through more than 2 minutes of Y&R and ATWT yesterday, but Passions had me for the entire hour, and will continue to through these next few weeks, I'm sure.

All I ask for is Ethan & Theresa to get back together and I'll praise the show.

All I ask for is Ethan & Theresa to get back together and I'll praise the show.

Of ANY "fated" PASSIONS couple, the last one I want to see together is Ethan and Theresa, at the expense of Gwen's unhappiness(I mean Ethan IS cheating on her anyway). So what if she leaked his paternity to a stupid tabloid and framed Theresa for it? I think that everything that Theresa has done is FAR worse in my book. God, words cannot express how much I hate that [!@#$%^&*] and how it seems like every PASSIONS fan I talk to try and justify her psychotic actions with "Gwen is ugly." or "Well, she leaked his paternity to the tabloid." or "She's a [!@#$%^&*]." What's more [!@#$%^&*]y than pining away after another woman's man who has tossed you aside like brown lettuce on a Big Mac burger? What's more pathetic than sleeping with a married man time and time again?!

This is another reason why I haven't really been able to stand PASSIONS. Because there was always this undertone that, no matter how psycho Theresa got, no matter how much the chips were down, no matter who she hurt, Theresa was ALWAYS the one to root for.

All I hope is that if they DO get back together, the new Gwen won't be concerned with getting him back.
