PSNS: The Passions Challenge and a little ranting

Oh, please. No one is bashing PSNS because they hate the show. If anything, they're "bashing" because JER/PSNS is giving us plenty of reasons to. Now I don't know what show y'all are watching, but it obviously isn't the same one that comes on right after DAYS on NBC.

Rick, I have watched Passions since it began. I have given this show chance after chance but no more. November was it for me. Do I still watch? Yes but that is out of dedication to the actors I like. That is it.

The show spent most of the beginning of November making the fans beleive we were getting the tabloid reveal. We never got it and it was a copout yet again but then Passions promoted the hell out of Ethan learning he was LE's father. Did we get that? No-they lied again. Two copouts in one month after years of this neverending crap.

The Ivy reveal was ok but they botched Grace's return. The faceoffs happened over the phone and that story had been dragged out so long who cared? Ivy and Sam have been barely on since then and Grace has been wasted.

What about all the character destruction? Julian's wasn't bad but it still was forced. All of a sudden Eve starts acting like a [!@#$%^&*] toward Julian out of the clear blue. It also hurt that the story got barely any airtime and only got a fair amount when they were ready to break up. The Fox/Kay/Miguel crap is horrible. Both male leads are horrible actors and all 3 characters have been ruined. The triangle was forced from the beginning as Miguel all of a sudden decided to go after Kay after one little talk with Pilar. Pilar has become wishy-washy as well. Fox is a mess and his transformation was rushed big time. If they had him do little things here and there and then build up to a big scheme, I would buy it but not that fast. The Charity and Miguel imposter scam and "Fox is dying" scam are recycled stories. This stuff is worst then Siren, who was at least entertaining at times. To make matters worse, Tabitha does nothing but be Kay's friend and motherly figure. I like that but every year they mention a potential Julian/Tabitha story and never do it. Tabitha needs more to do then being a mother and sitting around. She only gets action when Norma and Edna show up.

Luis/Fancy and Theresa/Jared have potential but Jaresa is built for nothing other then to keep ET apart and that sucks. Luis/Fancy were good until the "horniness" of the past few weeks. Sheridan had reason to snap but not that fast. That story is pure garbage and is ruining a beloved heroine. This goes against everything Sheridan is. The Spike/Chris thing has gone nowhere and is a waste.

The worst thing right now is the violence towards women. There is way too much rape and having Fancy raped a week before Christmas is sick. Passions used to be so lighthearted but now it's appalling some of the stuff that happens. Passions and JER go too much for shock and awe and not for quality. The show doesn't need that-it needs to be entertaining and to please it's fans.

Having said all that, it still does entertain but most of the complaints on this board and others are valid. It has nothing to do with reading spoilers as, like King said, they make the show sound better but the execution of the stories suck. I am done defending them. I did it for years, including most of the last two years when so many jumped ship. I am done. If Sheridan was behind Fancy's rape, I am through completely. If they get Sheridan out of with a "She's really Beth story" or split personality story I may be interested because that is the only way to salvage the character. Fans can only take so much and for me to stop watching says alot. I love this show and alot of the actors but it pains me to see what it is.

To get me back to even being close to enjoying the show, I want payoffs and I want the rape to stop. By payoffs, I mean actual payoffs and new stories beginning not new twists on existing ones. I also want them to care more about quaility rather then shocking the audience. They also need to look at some of the actors and can them. NuFox and nuMiguel are two of the worst actors I have ever seen. Doing all that would be a start. Plus, no more recycling stories. If they are going to repeat something, put a spin on it. Repeating something exactly the same only with different characters is lazy and shoddy writing.

I really thought JER would want to prove himself. The show was great in the summer but from September on has been crap. Those that find enjoyment can enjoy. I am still watching for now but this is the shakiest I have ever been about watching. I am hoping the holidays, which are traditionally good, will be. If not, then I probably won't be watching in 2007 after years of investment. It would be like most people jumped ship from Days during 2005 and 2006 and I stuck with it only this time I am jumping ship.

All those complaining have a right too and all those enjoying have a right to. No one should have to stop and if some can't take any of that then stay out of Passions threads, the few that there are.

AWESOME post, Phoenix! ITA with all of it.

Now I will be the first one to admit, the show is nowhere near as good as it once was, but it's not as bad as it could be either. Passions gets a bad rap for being a campy, slow moving dramedy instead of a traditional character based soap. IMO it's one hour of great entertainment in with you don't have to have big expectations, other than enjoying the ride.

There's two things I don't understand about this debate which I have often heard from PSNS aficianados (JSF, TOUPS) over the past 5 months.

1. The first thing I do not understand...what is PSNS' excuse for changing so drastically? DAYS, OLTL, AMC, GL, ATWT, B&B, and Y&R have all undergone either headwriter of E.P. changes or BOTH which would excuse the different direction slash steady decline in quality. What is PSNS' excuse? JER, the headwriter and creator, is still there. Lisa Hesser/De Cozette is still there as she has been since before the show began. Sure, they have a WAY different cast now, but they had a bad cast in the beginning who still did wonders because the storytelling was exceptional.

2. People...at least the people I think your post is referring to...don't dislike the show because it's slow moving, because its a dramedy, or because its a campy, gimmicky soap. If you are talking to me, PR, HoganStays, daysfan, and the dozens of others on SON who used to be obsessed with PSNS, you're preaching to the choir because we loved those things. But it's not cutting it anymore. The show is relying on them! The quality of storytelling is at an all-time low. It's gone from using the slow moving storytelling as a tool to relying on it because JER is too lazy and has no other stories in mind for the show. It does camp now because it doesn't know how to be a serious show. And the sad thing is, when the show takes itself seriously, it's amazing. But it never does, and it's sad.

I agree King. Great post and it sums up how we all feel.

For all of those people that hate and bash the show, why don't you just stop watching? It makes no sense to me why you would subject yourself to something that obviously makes you all so incredibly miserable. We're all never going to agree on the subject of Passions so I can make a suggestion to all of you haters: TURN THE CHANNEL!

But, for alot of us it's just plan loyalty. That's almost the only reason I watch anymore is because of my loyalty for the show.

Well, I agree with the notion that "Passions" is either an acquired taste or something that people "get" or they don't. And if they did at one time but don't know, perhaps the "getting" comes in phases. I agree that "Passions" is consistently entertaining. I've been howling all week over the syrupy sweet and unrealistic scripts that Fox has written for Fake Miguel and Charity to recite; that's FUNNY. So are Endora's spells on Tabitha to shut her up about Fake Charguel (although I have to say, as a newly christened Kayguel fan, I find Endora to be quite a BEACH minus the 'ea' for doing that). Also funny? Theresa's little speech to Gwen today about how if Ethan left her, Theresa would have TWO great men to choose from, "Jared ... Ethan... Jared........Ethan," and Gwen would have nothing but a lump of coal in her stocking. THAT'S entertaining. You don't need great drama to enjoy "Passions." Nor must plots move. I consistently watch "Passions" FIVE DAYS A WEEK for the comedy. It rivals some of the best sitcoms on TV.

Now to the drama.

Though I'm entertained by the show, I agree that the soap opera aspect has gone downhill since the show's first season. Back then, I had expectations -- of Ethan being with Theresa, of Luis being with Sheridan -- and those were fulfilled. Problem was, those couples were split up and then were thrown in situations that were ridiculous to split them apart. (Gwen got pregnant and Ethan started caring about who leaked his paternity -- let's be real; that's a new development; he cared, but not THAT much about the leak). Sheridan "died" countless times and she and Luis have played musical beds. Things have changed now. Neither couple looks like they'll ever be together.

But today.

I watch with no expectations, and can honestly say I enjoy the comedy.

"Passions" as a soap? Not so good.

"Passions" as a soap send-up? Good.

"Passions" as a comedy? Great!

Now, sure, the show has taken a darker edge lately, and who knows why, since JER doesn't seem to want the show to be a dramatic soap, but I honestly don't see the reason for the controversy over all the rapes and rape attempts. Though shocking, I'll say I wouldn't mind if speculation had been true and Sheridan "raped" Fancy with a dildo. It would be intriguing. Does that make me a bad person, a pervert? Does that make JER a pervert or sick if he wrote it? No. Others who have outed some as "closeminded" don't see that story is story. It's fantasy. Therefore, enjoying any kind of art, as long as it stays just that, is perfectly normal and natural. I'm entertained by creativity, and, while I by no means advocate rape, would be highly intrigued by how a Sheridan/Fancy rape would play out. I'm a little disappointed we missed that story, but it looks like Sheridan paid Spike to do the deed, and that's just as good because it has that same "she's her aunt!" angle.

But I digress.

Yes, I find "Passions" VERY entertaining. :)

You obviously missed the part where each of us said we're only watching right now out of loyalty.

BTW, I'm not a "hater".

I did not miss the point that you watch out of loyalty. Like I said why would you watch something that obviously makes you miserable regardless of loyalty? Maybe its misguided loyalty. Either way to each his/her own. Passions obvioulsy isn't for everyone.

Everyone who's dissatisfied with Passions needs to stop watching. I'm totally sick of people calling for its cancellation and bringing down the people who actually like the show! Why not be considerate of the feelings of people who are actually finding pleasure in Passions rather than being negative slobs?

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! YOU HIT THE NAIL RIGHT ON THE HEAD!

Some of us our loyal to our shows, and don't just go "Oh! I don't like that! Goodbye!" Like I said that is one of the main reasons I watch Passions.

And be considerate of others people feelings? First of all, being negative about the show should not hurt people's feelings and second, this is a message board. I'm not going to hold back saying my opinion because someone might not like it.
