  1. THE BRIGHTER DAY Network: CBS -TV !sme: Mon. thru Fri., 1 -1:15 p.m. EST Sponsor: Procter & Gamble Agency: C rripton Adv. Inc. Cast: B111-Smith, Brooke Byron, Hal Hol- brook, Mary Lynn Beller, Lois Nettleton, lV ary Michael Producer: Mary Harris Director: Ed Kogan Music: Dick Leibert Announcer: Jimmy Blaine Producing Agency: Young & Rubicam Inc.Writer: Doris Frankel UNDER the by no means surprising sponsor ship of Procter & Gamble, The Brighter Day, a daytime 'serial, has been inserted in the CBS -TV. schedule. Among soap operas, this one is super -sudsy. The new serial began last Monday. By Wednesday the story had become so hopelessly tangled that it would take months to straighten out the plot, assuming, as is definitely not the case, that the manufacturers of such programs would ever consider straightening. Already problems, problems. The format deals with one Reverend Dennis, a model minister, fully equipped with the standard platitudes; his- congregation, as folksy a collection of people as ever a clergyman has been blessed with; and members of his family, each with a personal crisis all his own. A good portion of last Wednesday's installment was given over to Patsy, Rev. Dennis' young daughter, presumably involved in a love affair not destined to lead up the aisle at least for the present. Typical dialogue in a touching father-daughter scene: Rev. Dennis: We're going to have a change in the weather. It's beginning to snow. Patsy (after an unexpected phone call from her beau): No, Father, that's not snow, that's orange blossoms. And it's not January -it's June after all! Acting quality on the new series is on a evel with the script.
  2. FROM THESE ROOTS The Frasers of Stratfield, U.S.A., are an interesting sociological study. Classes and callings of the family and friends include editors, farmers, writers, mill foremen, bankers, doctors and maiden aunts. There are wise old heads, middle -aged members of the family and rebellious grandchildren, all re- volving about Ben Fraser, head the family and editor of the town newspaper. The abandon with which the character types have been thrown together strains the limits of credibility. Still their battles with life -love, bills and mortgages -help while away an afternoon. Reviewers have been thoughtfully provided with copies of the Fraser family tree. The occasional viewer probably would appreciate a copy too. Production costs: Approximately $25,000 weekly. Sponsored on NBC -TV Monday- Friday, 3:30-4 p.m. EDT, by Procter & Gamble through Benton & Bowles and Alberto - Culver Co. through Geoffrey Wade Adv. Producer: Don Wallace; directors: Joseph Behar and Paul Lammers; assistant director: Paul Freeman; writers: John Pickard and Frank Provo
  3. Apparently LOL had a trial color broadcast in 1954. LOVE OF LIFE Network: CBS -TV Director: Larry Auerbach Producer: Richard Dunn Writer: John D. Hess Executive Producer of Color: Richard Lewin On Air: Mon. FrL, 12:15 -12:30 p.m. Color - cast, Sept. 8 only. Star: Peggy McCay Sponsor: American Home Products Corp. Agency: Blow Co. Production Costs: $8,500 gross weekly IF COLOR is going to add anything to tv's day time serials it will be in displaying the clothes of the female characters to the predominantly feminine audience. In the Sept. 8 colorcast of Love of Life the gowns of the heroine, her sister and her best friend certainly showed up more attractively in color than they would have in black -and- white. The addition of color did not extend the action of this installment of the drama, which utilized the entire 15 minutes to introduce the brother of the hero, a surly individual who is obviously "up to no good" and who seems likely to interfere with the plans of his brother and the heroine for an early marriage. But experience has proved this to be just about the perfect pace for a daytime drama and it doubtless would be unwise to let the addition of color disturb this basic factor. No soap opera fan, this masculine reviewer sees little likelihood that color will do anything to change his attitude. And he's sure the sponsor couldn't care less.
  4. I remember Ann Flood's ad for the bag in SOD in the late 70's.Was it somethng like the Convertriple? I recall it could be converted from a shoulder bag to a carry bag etc. Tres versatile!! I'll see if I can find it.
  5. Slick re Ben Jerrod. Variety April 5th Charlotte Stewart, rehearsing as ingenue lead in next Pasadena Playhouse production, "Open Book," has been cast as ingenue in NBC-TV daytime series, "Ben Jerrod, Attorney-At-Law. April 30th Joan Connors has been signed for three segments of "The Doctors," to be directed by Herbert Kenwith in New York. Actress just completed "Ben Jerrod, Attorney-At-Law" pilot for NBC.
  6. Thanks so much Amy for taking the tome to contact Jami and sharing her response. Are you planning to connect with CCCourtney or Pam Toll? The current story with Liz held prisoner is really dragging. At this point Rita Lakin and Rick Edelstein are sharing headwriting duties so not sure how the collabaration actually worked.Apparently they both got a lot of time of so perhaps Rick had control at this time because it doesn't seem a Rita like story.
  7. Her daughter Katherine Phillips apparently was working on something after her mother's death. She placed an ad in Variety in 76 asking for contributions to a planned biography. For a biography of Irna Phillips (creator and writer of soap operas, 1901-1973). I would appreciate any information, letters, photographs or memoribilia.Katherine L. Phillips 6 2 0 N. Michigan Avenue Chicago
  8. Wasn't Genie also mentioned when there was talk of keeping Caroline on B&B when Joanna Johnson left?
  9. Gregory Walcott, who played Ralph Olsen has died.In the mid 70's Ralph had a brief romance with Katherine Chancellor. He also was in the low budget classic Plan 9 from Outer Space. http://variety.com/2015/film/news/gregory-walcott-dead-plan-9-from-outer-space-1201457738/
  10. For the week ending Dec 12 1975 1. Match Game 2. All in the Family 3. ATWT 4. Y&R 5. SFT 6. GL 7. AW 8. AMC 9. DOOL 10.GH
  11. Olivia Delaney was a bit of a mystery character. She was brought on as the ex wife of Robert but that was never explored as Robert was off the canvas and then she hung around with no story. Maybe Olivia was a victim of the writer changes around that time.
  12. Variety reported in Jan 65 that John Beradino and Emily McLaughlin had successfully lobbied to receive special billing in the end credits.
  13. RE RTPP Variety mentioned Terry Linn Wood into continuing role in June 73. And Ivor Francis for 'several episodes' April 72. Also Stacy Harris died suddenly in March 73 and was replaced by Frank Maxwell.
  14. You would think that the headwriter/assistants job would be to lay out story and beats /character motivation etc without paying out extra money to have someone else throw in their 2 cents worth. From what I've read half the time they're ignored anyway.
  15. Yes it was Julie. At a time when the show needed focus and to strengthen the core, they went in the opposite direction and went for new characters and families.
  16. Have Sally decide to leave town with Kevin or mysteriously disappear and later discover Denny Hobson, her first hubby is responsible! Sally Phillips was the first 'adult' Sally and she was a rebellious type.Dawn Bwnz was also shortlived in the role at on e point. AW missed an opportunity in not having Ricky Matthews arrive in BC as a teen to stay with Grandma Liz and discover the truth about his past.He could go in search of his blood reatives, only to be disappointed and realize that the Matthews are his true family. Russ could have been given a teen daughter or son at this time (early 80's)a result of an affair from the times he was away from Bay City.
  17. Wonder what Gillian Spencer contributed as story consultant?
  18. Don't think this pic has been posted before

  24. Lindsay Bloom was later on Y&R as Gloria -a semi rival for Leslie in the Jonas storyline.
