Y&R: Old Articles
Dorothy Green (Jennifer Brooks) was not a happy camper. In an interview from August 77,shortly before she was killed off she claimed the older women on Y&R were written as victims - she sited Liz Foster as having a stroke, KayChancellor - rich but lonely and an alcoholic and Vanessa Prentiss, scarred and living as a recluse. The message according to Ms Green is that 'you've reared your children, now you're finished'.She claimed fans she meets in that age group agree with her and that these women are not shown to be doing anything positive with their lives. She said the men on the show are treated differently eg Stuart, who hasn't done a thing wrong in 5 years.

FYI Liz's parents were on the show.Harriet and Keith Wilson were played by Morgan Sterne and Meg Myles.Apparently Harriet was neurotic and over protective. They were on from 66 -67. Seeing Larry Weber in the cast was interesting on a couple of levels. Firstly, this is another previously unknown soap role for this actor who is at the top of the charts for most soap roles along with the likes of Keith Charles and Conard Fowkes and secondly because he returned a decade or so later as Barney Dancy

In light of all this smoking ,it's interesting that years later TD ran an anti-smoking story that utilised guest stars like Johnny Carson,Tony Randall and Judy Collins. Steve was trying to quit. Re Maggie,as I posted earlier Variety reported in August 68 that Lydia Bruce would now be taking over the role of Maggie after filling in for Bethel Leslie. So Bethel left sometime earlier than that.I think it was due to being cast in the feature film "The Molly McGuires' with Sean Connery. Bethel then immediately got primetime work in 'Name of the Game' and 'High Chapparal' as well as writing for 'The Virginian' with writing partner Gerry Day in an episode starring Joan Crawford. Coming in 68,the first major Black characters Dr Simon Harris (Conrad Roberts) in April and Anna Ford (Zeida Coles)Penny Davis (Jami Fields)in May ,Jody Bronson (CC Courtney) Mike Powers (Peter Burnell) in September and Martha Allen (Sally Gracie)

Gerald Gordon stayed with GH until mid 78 and was featured quite heavily till then - well into the Monty/Marland era. That was the end of a 2 year stint. GH wanted him in 76 for the role of Mark and had to have 2 other actors in the role until he finally signed. Like other actors (George Reinholt for one) Gordon had primetime roles written into the contract. It seems these actors didn't read the fine print that stated it was slanted in the network's favor.Maybe they received some dollars instead but the network didn't follow through on the promise of primetime roles.

Re the Bambi story. I have been able to track down some of the players who have remained a mystery since that time. Earl Hammond played Rev Richard Brewster. He was on Valiant Lady as Hal Soames and Clear Horizon Patricia Arnell played Eloise Alburney Frank Elmore plated Eugene Hall

Very impressed with Pam Toll - she evokes a younger Julianne Moore. She didn't seem to click as Pam on Somerset-a pity as Rachel's half sister was then forgotten but could have been a dynamite character on AW. Maggie mentioned Althea visiting her mother and Penny but I couldn't catch where. We have yet to see Greta or Mike.Does anyone know their status at this point? Where is Mike living and who is taking care of Greta? I am also impressed with Carolee Campbell - she comes across as so 'normal' competent in her job but as we will see she is a more insecure in her personal life. Nowadays, she would be presented as a real clutz for 'comedy' relief. Really everything about this show is top notch soap.

The two blondes with Paul are Pam Warren (Kristine DeBell) and Cindy Lake (DeAnna Robbins) Looking at the Abbott house set it appears there have been minor changes over the years. I had forgotten about the drop chandeliers. Maybe Chris was being coaxed in the modelling shoot to reflect on first love etc and it brought on sadness due to her situation with Snapper.

I believe Arthur Benson was a producer or agent involved in making the movie You Can Love Again that used Steve Kaslo's song as it's title theme. So this was around 1978.

I thought it was Hamilton also, although I can't find any record of it.There was a character called Edna Hamilton played by Joanna Roos,Florence Williams and Margaret Baker who I assumed to be Althea's mother. This was around the time her son Buddy died so it would have been natural that her mother was there. Mysteries like this might be solved if we keep getting access to the Retro TV eps.

There was talk of George going to The Doctors when all the drama went down at AW. Imagine if instead of moving to OLTL, George and Jacquie has reteamed at TD and played out a new love story there. Thinking back to how Lemay moved Rachel in a new direction by giving her the man and lifestyle she had always aspired to in Mac, do posters think it might have been interesting if the same psychology had been applied to Alice? She had always been the good girl who believed in happy endings (despite all her trauma).Maybe seeing Rachel happy with Mac and losing Steve could have damaged her and she became bitter and manipulative. Do you think JC could have played that? I think with careful writing it might have worked.

I don't know what became of Alice's house. When Alice was written off in 79,was that the last we saw of that set?Often,to save money, shows would have other characters use the set, perhaps explaining that they were renting it while the owner was away. When Alice came back,in the Vana Tribbey/Linda Borgeson years, where did she live? I remember when Jacquie Courtney returned, she was shown on the Matthews family home set.Did she, and the other Alice's live there? How did Liz come to live there?I assume she moved in after Jim died. Was Liz shown living elsewhere before that time or was she never shown at home?

Variety mentions Jan Sterling joining the cast in January 1970 as Mildred. Most reference books have the date as 69. Maybe it was late 69? Does anyone recall her in this role? She was fabulous in her 50's movies and I'd love to know how she came across in this role. I didn't know that for many years she was involved with Sam Wanamaker (Berrenger's)

Also, the sets look good. Interesting to see Lee,Cissy and Wendy pop up towards the end of the ep.And Spence just have that scene at the door. Was this still the Corringtons? It's so sad to think that within a short time, the show went to pieces. So in this case it wasn't the half hour format itself but probably the pressure to compete with the flashier 1 hr shows where so much more seemed to be happening.
