  1. Alice Hill Romance of Helen Trent Helen Trent (one day replacement for virginia Clark, who missed her first day after 8 years in the role) 1941 Springtime and Harvest 1940 Jenny Peabody 1937
  2. Who's the Boss was given the Thurs @ 8.30 slot, so it seems ABC had little faith in it and it could have gone the way of so many other sitcoms and cancelled after a few eps. But there was some star power involved and reviews were fairly positive so ABC quickly moved it to Tuesdays where it started to gain some traction. Also in it's favor was that ABC had so many pricey flops like Paper Dolls, Glitter etc Males you wonder how many other shows might have blossomed into hits had TPTB shown a little patience.
  3. Paul was slowly marginalized. First he lost family members over the years. Patty was brought back as a psycho and written into a corner. Heather was given 3 recasts then dumped. Ricky is SORASED, is a psycho and dies. He's remarried to Christine but LLB hardly appears so he has no personal life. A retcon gives him Dylan as a son, But SB leaves and the character is forgotten. They never played his connection to Lauren. So Paul is pretty much an island. And when he did appear in a police capacity he was always gruff or seemed disconnected. I think Doug should still be there in some capacity.
  4. How is it , that in a few minutes posting, we can come up with better plots than a man whose full time job earns him six figures???
  5. Would Devon stand for it? What was the point in bringing on Moses? Looks like he'll join Charlie,Mattie and Reed in the needlessly SORASED group. And Ana, Scott, Fen in the wasted returns category.
  6. Muriel Starr David Harum Henrietta Harper 1946 Betty Ruth Smith Stepmother 1939 Masquerade Barbara Palmer 1946 Joan Vitez Light of The World Zuleikha
  7. I think you still need some public spaces, but not overly rely on them. Some clever directing/editing that lack of extras isn't so noticeable. Agree the cast needs to be trimmed, however I would keep non contract/recurring so that characters can be used when/if necessary. I think ATM scenes are short because they believe viewers don't like longer scenes and also they are easier to tape- longer scenes require more dialogue for actors to remember and more blocking as characters move around. YES! all of those have been used and overused so time to get back to basics. I'd be looking at characters that are part of the core but haven't been used for a while, if ever eg Scotty Banning, Stephanie Johnson, Andrew Donovan etc Say goodbye to the DiMeras.
  8. P Phyllis is responsible for just as much (or more) s**t than Diane so her taking any kind of moral ground is nonsense. I get the feeling that the D stories -we go from A to D on this show - are basically written to fill in airtime and give the rest of the cast something to do week to week. Job changes, health scares, misunderstandings etc
  9. Going by Jason 47's detailed episode listing, the scenes posted above are from the Wed June 25th 1980 episode.
  10. Bartlett Robinson Front Page Farrell 1952 Life Can Be Beautiful Dr Abbott Romance of Helen Trent 1947 Woman of Courage Chaplain Jim 1 day temp replacement for Don MacLaughlin due to rail delay June 1942 Portia Faces Life Walter Manning/Nicholas Veit (dual role) 1943 Woman of America 1945
  11. Really enjoyed listening to Tristan Rogers. A contrast with Maurice's meandering approach. Wished he had more time to talk about his GH experiences.
  12. I believe Ina's boarding house appeared first in late 77 as the show prepared to move to an hour and new sets and characters were needed, In addition to Alice Lovelace, Ina had a boyfriend Ethan Bottomley, who worked at the newspaper morgue. So it seems they were going for a light comedy/oldies vibe at first with those characters. Marco was living there and Becky Lee moved there so it was probably through Marco that we first saw Ina's? Sally Gracie had been dropped by The Doctors after along run as Martha. Joseph Stuart was producing OLTL after exec producing The Doctors, so he may was familiar with her and might have got her the role. It's funny to look back and see older characters being introduced. When was the last time a new over 50 character came onto a soap recently?
  13. When Mal Young updated the opening, part of the reason was so it could be updated easily. You can see that when Eileen,Beth or Lauralee appear they are included in the opening. They need to get the new actors to do a quick pose so they can be included. The show is so incredibly cheap these days.
  14. Guess Mrs Calder is housekeeper at the Merritt's? Or a visitor ? She must have had some importance to that day's script or why would they bother?
  15. The lighting and make up are two more areas where lack of budget and overall care is showing.
  16. Kim was pretty much front burner and popular when Patty played the role. I wonder how she approached it and what the audience reaction was? Did they perhaps delay some story points until Kathryn returned? i'd love to see at least a photo of Patty as Kim as I've always known Patty to be blonde.Did she wear a dark wig to play Kim?
  17. Woman of America was not a ratings success so at some point the story moved to the modern day with the great granddaughter of Prudence Dane as the lead character. In a 1976 interview Anne Seymour talked about the show and mentioned that Santos Ortega played her husband who was killed off in the first episode. i think Mona Kent was the writer?
  18. First Love General Blair Robert Allen Gus Baird ???
  19. Marjorie Anderson Manhattan Mother temp replacement for Kaye Brinker Richard Coogan Light of the World Jonathan 1946 Santos Ortega Woman of America Mr Dane (killed off in 1st episode) Aunt Jenny 'The Problem Drinker' Mr Rogers 1950
  20. Ok I'll bite. Firstly, I was expressing a personal opinion about the decor of Ms Lucci's home. I didn't realize that was not allowed or deemed unacceptable. I did state that taste is a very personal thing and two people can have differing opinions. Secondly, I have no need to show a video of my home, but if I did, as Susan Lucci chose to do, I would expect that not everyone would like the decor/design and might comment to that effect.
  21. And risk causing a scene ? Maybe not the best idea.
  22. Re George Wyner-I never knew his name but sure recognized that face. Maybelle Prindaville (what a name!) Sweet River John Moore Lora Lawton Sir Malcolm Travers 1947 Katie's Daughter Count Felipe Dostello 1947 This Is Nora Drake
  23. It would have been great to keep Melissa around, just as a recurring player to be a friend to Hope and daughter/grandaughter and maybe have some mini stories along the way, to keep the sense of family and history alive. I'm sure Lisa would have been happy to work once in a while. In my ideal soap world, the Hortos would be more prominent but there would also be references and appearances from family members not front burner.I'm sure many actors would be happy to keep appearing. That would set up the next generations. If we had have seen Melissa and others throughout the years, then any children she had would have been known to the audience and accepted, rather than pop up children we'd never heard about.
  24. Let's face it, Alice probably gave up after the traumas her kids went through. Her parenting approach was obviously not working. Brother impregnating brother's wife, shootings, breakdowns, amnesia, illegitimate children etc She decided with the grandkids, she'd just ride the wave and provide the donuts!
  25. thanks so much for finding/posting this. The original Horton house is seems quite different in detail than later years. I'd have to do have a closer look but that is my first impressiom This is pre Bill Bell but it's interesting he didn't make huge changes, just polished things up for the better. Alice comes across as quite harsh to me, underneath that caring exterior. Basically saying 'get it together Marie'-no daughter of mine will be weak. I guess that was more the mood of the times, whereas now a daughter of that age would have anxiety and depression after being triggered by a micro aggression. Also to see how they cleverly staged the car accident and restaurant scene . In the latter, a couple of extras , some tables and the hint of fancy decor. In comparison on Y&R today they just plonk 2 people in an empty restaurant set and it looks awful.
