Y&R went off track Fall 1994 (the aftermath of OJ) through the first half of 1997. It rebounded during the second half of 1997 to lead into the 25th anniversary. 1998 was the last year I'd say Y&R was truly excellent.

With Days run on NBC lasting 56 years 305 days, it will finish as the third longest running daytime drama on US network television, behind General Hospital and Guiding Light. Days would have moved past Guiding Light on January 30, 2023.

I agree, the main reasons being that Y&R/B&B primarily draw the 50+ audience and international sales.

Has there ever been a primetime television show that impacted the fortunes of a network's primetime lineup more than Dallas and CBS? The rise and fall of Dallas pretty much lines up with the rise and fall of CBS primetime. Fall 1979-Spring 1985: A pop culture phenomenon from Who Shot JR until Bobby's car accident. CBS became the #1 primetime network in Spring 1980 and remained so until Spring 1985. Dallas is CBS's highest rated scripted program from 1980/81 to 1984/85. Fall 1985-Spring 1987: Tanks in the aftermath of Bobby's car accident. CBS primetime drops to 2nd place in Spring 1986. 1985/86 Dallas is no longer CBS's highest rated scripted program, it's now Murder, She Wrote. Dallas falls out of the Top 10 in the aftermath of the "it was all a dream" resolution. Fall 1987-Spring 1988: Starts to go off the rails in the aftermath of Pamela's disappearance. CBS primetime drops to 3rd place in Spring 1988. Fall 1988-Spring 1991: Off the rails plus budget mode. Falls out of the Top 30 in the aftermath of Sue Ellen's departure. CBS remains in 3rd place until Spring 1991. CBS primetime had some signs of life from Fall 1991-Spring 1994, but it didn't last. CBS primetime became a mess again from Fall 1994-Spring 2000. Summer 2000 was the first edition of Survivor, Fall 2000 was the start of CSI plus Everybody Loves Raymond became a Top 10 show, and the rest is history. There were other factors that lead to the decline of Dallas (weak lead-ins, sitcoms making a comeback, changing times) and the decline of CBS primetime (no hit sitcoms for many years, hanging on to aging dramas because the new dramas had no signs of growth, loss of established affiliates in the aftermath of losing NFL broadcasting rights in Fall 1994) but I don't think anyone expected the impact of the decline of what was CBS's biggest pop culture show during the first half of the 1980s to affect CBS's primetime lineup for 13 years.

Maybe for 1973-1982 CBS/Sony could start with clip sets of the major storylines that set everything in motion for Y&R as we know it today: Jill/Katherine, Victor/Nikki, the Abbotts, then get into full episodes starting 1983.

There's also the factors of Magnum, P.I. and Simon & Simon weakening as lead-ins due to NBC's Thursday comedies surging with the breakout success of The Cosby Show, and NBC moving L.A. Law to Thursday 10 pm in December 1986. 1984/85: Magnum, P.I. drops from 6th to 15th. Simon & Simon drops from 5th to 7th. Knots Landing moves up from 11th to 9th (it's first and only Top 10 finish). Over on NBC, The Cosby Show first season finishes 3rd, Family Ties moves from below the Top 30 to 5th, Cheers moves from below the Top 30 to 12th, Night Court moves from below the Top 30 to 20th, Hill Street Blues moves from below the Top 30 to 30th. 1985/86: Magnum, P.I. falls below the Top 30. Simon & Simon drops to 29th. Knots Landing drops to 17th. Over on NBC, The Cosby Show moves up to 1st, Family Ties moves up to 2nd, Cheers moves up to 5th, Night Court moves up to 11th, Hill Street Blues falls below the Top 30. 1986/87: Magnum, P.I. moves to Wednesday 9 pm. Simon & Simon moves to Thursday 8 pm and Knots Landing moves to Thursday 9 pm where they are now head-to-head with the entire NBC Thursday comedy block. CBS sees the error of their ways and moves Knots Landing back to Thursday 10 pm but they keep changing the rest of their Thursday lineup because nothing was working. NBC counter-programs by moving L.A. Law from Friday 10 pm to Thursday 10 pm. Simon & Simon falls below the Top 30 and Knots Landing drops to 26th. Over on NBC, The Cosby Show remains 1st, Family Ties remains 2nd, Cheers moves up to 3rd, Night Court moves up to 7th, L.A. Law first season finishes 21st. In the grand scheme of things though, the big four primetime soaps all started tanking Fall 1985 and were creatively exhausted by Spring 1988. Weak lead-ins, strategic counter-programming, sitcoms making a comeback (family sitcoms peaked Fall 1985-Spring 1988), and changing times also played a part.

CBS/Sony have no idea what a gold mine they have with 1970s/1980s/1990s Y&R. The classics proved that there's an audience for those episodes.

MTS 40th anniversary episode had mentions of Nikki/Paul and the cult but none of Dylan. I'd say the Dylan rewrite has been removed from the canon.

Scott died on B&B in November 1993. Lauren didn't cross over to B&B full time until Fall 1995.

This fall on CBS Daytime, The Price is Right starts its 51st season and Lets Make a Deal starts its 14th season. As of today they are the longest running and 5th longest running daytime game shows on US network television. The shows in between: the NBC Daytime versions of Concentration (1958-1973), Wheel of Fortune (1975-1989), and Hollywood Squares (1966-1980).

I personally would watch the Bill Bell years to pinpoint elements he later used on Y&R/B&B and also to see the actors/actresses he later cast on Y&R/B&B. My guess is that most Days fans would watch 1983-1998 as those 15 years encompassed the supercouple era and Reilly's sci-fi era.

The final NBC episode is Friday September 9. That's almost 15 years to the date that Days became NBC's only daytime drama (September 10, 2007). Days NBC run will total 56 years 305 days (November 8, 1965 to September 9, 2022).

I just remembered that B&B reached another daytime history milestone. On Monday July 18, B&B moved past Search for Tomorrow (both CBS and NBC runs) to become the 8th longest-running daytime drama on US network television. As of today, the 10 longest-running daytime dramas on US network television are General Hospital, Guiding Light, Days, As the World Turns, Y&R, One Life to Live, All My Children, B&B, Search for Tomorrow, Another World.

When you look at the 1989 storylines, the front-burner females were Cassandra and Cricket, while the rest of the main females (Jill, Katherine, Nikki, Ashley, Traci, Lauren, Nina, Leanna) got second or third tier storylines. So I'd say resting Ashley for a year or so might have worked. Brenda Epperson was a serviceable recast but in hindsight her main storylines (Brad/Ashley/Traci triangle, Victor marriage/divorce, Blade/Rick) didn't work. Many have said that Bill Bell wrote BE's Ashley as a typical soap heroine which wasn't what the character originally was. From what I've seen of ED's 1982-1988 arc, Ashley wasn't the typical Bill Bell heroine in the vein of Leslie and Chris Brooks before her and Caroline and Christine after her; he wrote Ashley originally as confident and goal oriented but she became emotionally fragile in the aftermath of the parentage reveal. Bill Bell also kept ED's Ashley and Traci in separate orbits when it came to their romances and romantic rivals (Ashley/Victor/Nikki, Traci/Danny/Lauren, Traci/Brad/Lauren) but he must have seen a connection between BE and DD to put Ashley and Brad in each other's orbit romantically. Also BE had no connection w/ EB at all plus she looked too innocent and sweet to be believable as the other woman in the eternal triangle.
