  2. Not a lot of spreading of the wealth. Y&R may have overperformed in the Lead categories, especially Actress, but it was blanked in the other categories, except for the undervalued Robert Newman. (Guest seems like Alley Mills’s trophy to lose.) GH is absolutely dominant in Supporting. Those look like old-school JFP-type lists.

  4. I feel like he had a better balance of light and dark back in the day. There was of course his stint as the epileptic “Grandpa Snowflake” with his canine friend Zapato, but I feel like they overcompensated for that “lapse” by making him an absolute monster post-LML. And aside from his ugh relationship with Sabrina, he didn’t really have the benefit of a romance to bring out his softer side (à la his romance with Hope).

  11. It did.
  12. In terms of actors, Nicholas Chavez is about the only person who consistently rose above his material. Not that good work wasn’t done otherwise, but he’s the only person who regularly impressed me. Beyond just a reel to win. The shows themselves? Bleh.
  13. They seem so disorganized. Announcing the nominations date two days before, etc.
  14. I was watching Ambitions and it felt like a show from someone who learned all he knows about human behavior from watching soap operas and not from actually living a life. Not sure if that’s the case for Jamey but that’s the feeling I got. Even camp and artifice can feel “lived-in,” so to speak, but nothing rang true for me.
  15. Dude’s got stamina.

  18. It’s weird. This whole board feels super low-energy to me lately, which could be my biased perception (as these soaps have lost my interest), but it’s weird to feel this slight lull on the board when you have two major milestone anniversary years for iconic soaps. Y&R had some fun stuff like Nina tearing Abby a new one. In spite of the nods to history, like Phyllis begging Danny to validate how much she’s changed, it did feel like a bit of a letdown as a jumping-off point to new things. The returns could have been more integrated, not to mention we should have had more flashbacks and the 1970s were completely ignored. But with today’s soaps, you’re grateful you get anything halfway decent, and Y&R at least rose above that low bar. We’re so used to Y&R as deathly dull that it sometimes feels improved when they put in the barest effort, and while it was nice to see everyone at a big event, it was mostly in service to this botched story with Phyllis, which, again, at least grabbed some attention and made us engage with it. But ultimately it’s nonsense. Leanna basically existed for people to sh!t on. Just reminded me of how Sally existed as a punching bag for the town in her early days.
