Preach. My patience is also really thin with these shows nowadays. I think dragonflies was discussing it in the B&B. I love escapism as much as anyone, even those my preference is “grounded but elevated,” yet even the most fantastical stories need to be credible, and this just isn’t it. I see how they were building up Phyllis to be off the rails again and alienated, which was a great idea, but the audience is just not buying this “twist,” even if it’s provided a few decent Emmy reels for 2024.

The BTS stans are livid.

Totally. It’ll be a rough next few years with the passings of a lot of the remaining icons from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. It’s especially sad with soap stars because it feels like so much of that history dies with them. I see EH getting her flowers from a lot of people, and even that outpouring feels muted for someone of her stature.

Y&R is my fave, but the P&G soaps, AMC, and OLTL all felt more approachable and lived-in, even with their larger-than-life characters like Erica Kane and Lucinda, while the L.A. shows felt so glossy and Hollywood, which has its place. But, as much as came to enjoy the craft and primetime-style excitement of GH, I never connected with any of the California shows (aside from Y&R) in the same way I did the NYC soaps. There was an intimacy with those shows. For me, daytime pretty much “died” when OLTL left ABC. I suppose the L&O series and a few other high-profile shows like Succession have shot and/or still shoot here, and it was good to see soap stars turn up on The Good Fight. I just gasped. What an incredible life, but still. Like Bev McKinsey, she created not one but two iconic characters in daytime. It’s a cliché, but there ABSOLUTELY won’t be another like her.
