Y&R: Josh Griffith steps down as head writer

The fact that JG has continued to write since his departure was announced makes me think it is indeed his decision to leave. When HWs are fired they are usually tossed out that same day.

Either way he leaves, but if it's his decision then that suggests CBS/Sony were fine with the state of the show and not looking to make changes. (And why would they? For reasons I can't understand, the ratings haven't suffered). They might also just let Griffith choose his successor, in which case it will likely be Marla Kanelos and Dave Ryan, or Amanda Beall.

Given his own writing choices, I’d be mortified if he had a say in his successor.

It’s akin to the much lamented Iain MacLeod having high-level supporters at ITV who elevated him when he quit is job of Producer to the extent that he (reportedly) chose his Coronation Street successor, Kate Brooks.

And well…

Is it possible that behind the scenes the contenders for the job are submitting a tentative story bible to show where they would take the show in the next six months if they were made headwriter? That could why it's taken a bit of time to name a replacement.

I could see that and partly think that. At least they are giving them time if true versus Sally.

God help us if he gets to name his successors and it's no one from in-house.

Talk about setting up someone for failure! I might not be the world's biggest Sally Sussman fan, but even I think she should've been given more than 24 hours to decide which direction she wanted to take Y&R.

Same. 24 hours...and barely that...was not enough.

If CBS/Sony wants the new HW's work to kick off starting with the premiere of the "Fall season" shouldn't they be hiring this person ASAP? How many months is Y&R written in advance these days?

This is a major reason why I wish she had more time. She told them she hadn't seen the show in 10 years and they though she could come out of the gate and be able to seamlessly take over? Maybe on a primetime show with less episodes but on a soap that is impossible.

If it were anybody else I might not care but that was our last chance to get a more Bell-esque show. Even had she not stayed long term, Sussman and Alden could've trained the staff to understand how a Bell soap should be written so if they did end up promoting from within, it would still be Y&R. But it felt like a final cutting of ties with the Bell's which is the most heartbreaking part. Imagine even if Kay Alden were allowed to remain in her consultant role for years. That would've been invaluable to the show.
