Labine: comic-relief animals (Foster & Annabelle on GH, Todd’s parrot on OLTL); kooky female supporting characters (Lucy, Lois, Maggie, May Merisi); elevated, erudite dialogue; mob intrigue; dead children.

I’m sure there’s much more I’m missing.

I believe Irna herself told a variation of this story on one of her radio soaps. I believe the radio soap was 'The Road of Life' and had a Doctor character suffer amnesia and he ended up on a farm where he fell in love with a widowed woman - who also had a disabled sister-in-law living on the farm. I don't know if Bell had been working for Irna at this time, but evidently, this seemed to be a story he must have noticed and would later repeat twice to much success.

Agnes liked her young love storyline where the protaganists were the innocent girl and the well meaning good guy who were manipulated by outside forces. But she really really only used it repeatedly on AMC.

I guess Meredith and Larry on early OLTL would qualify.

On AW , Steve wasn't the type. Loving had Stacey and Jack?

On AMC,first there was Phil and Tara. Then Cliff and Nina, followed quickly by Jenny and Greg.

But there really wasn't a next couple to follow that template. At one point when she took over the writing I think Scott and Becca were given that role.

Scott and Becca definitely were. The last iterations, which Agnes was allegedly involved in, could be considered Pete and Celia and A.J. and Miranda at AMC 2.0. (Though AMC had apparently planned to subvert it according to Eric Nelsen by having A.J. come out as gay.)

I think Cooper and Steffi on LOV can also be classed as one of Agnes' young love couples with Cooper as the well-meaning poor little rich boy like A.J., though I am pretty sure she had nothing to do with Cooper and Hannah who also fit the mold.

I do agree that Sadie and Carla had the salt of the earth long suffering mom and the striving for more daughter with a twist.

I know Agnes Nixon also head wrote GL and don't think she used that template there.

She did a reverse variation with Peggy Scott (Fletcher) as the put upon daughter of a striving for more mother (Maggie Scott) on GL

She employed the put upon daughter and social climbing mom on AMC (Ann & Phoebe, Edna & Dottie, Opal & Jenny) and I believe she set up the Steffi Brewster/Deborah element on Loving

    • Well, I am glad to know that & for it to make sense, so thanks for the info &  the perspective, also. At the end of AMC 1.0, I thought the new young talent was really quite good, but I missed Eden & NuBianca just ... well, I wasn't 100% sold on her & Bianca was so important to me. But then, Tad & Dixie were also important & yep, there's another problem, for me I mean. I'm not your typical AMC fan but I hung in there anyway. I know what you mean because it wasn't as good as it once had been but it was still Agnes's show in Pine Valley. Some of that is a bittersweet nostalgic clinging to the past, I guess. By that time I'd been through so many show cancellations. AW, Santa Barbara, PC, The City, GL, ATWT.

Betsy Snyder, when she was at DAYS was part of the WGA winning writing team before she died, tragically far too young.
    • Yep Edmund and Tad went under cover to infiltrate the... Willow Lake (I think?) old folks community scandal that was exploiting Phoebe, etc.  (Which at one point led to Edmund rescuing Brooke from quicksand--common around Pine Valley I guess

) EDIT maybe I'm wrong.  I found the quicksand scene

But for the story all I can find is Edmund going undercover as the gigolo "preying" on older women, Eduardo (no one would recognize him with that disguise and name ) so the drag must have been.. a different story?
    • But then he HATES the original Heather Webber (Cher's half sister played her, right?) and we know what happened when Robin would step into the role a year after this.  He does seem pretty spot on about actors who show promise otherwise.  It's interesting he knocks OLTL early on (though I loved all the recently released episodes from this era we got) but does give a lot of credit to the actress playing Cathy despite earlier complaining about her story.  And over all, while quite negative, his various pros and cons on the shows sounds about right with what I know of the shows at this time. This was a July dated issue of the magazine but and I know they date mags a month or two in advance--obviously when he wrote this he didn't know Lovers and Friends was gonna go off the air (in May I think).
    • You know one of the soap outlets posed that question just last week: Who do you want Trina with Spencer or Kai? And, of course, the picture of Spencer was NAC. I said, well, a lot. I chose Kai. I said that Spencer had been an entitled brat & that some people valued him over her, when I valued her above all others. I guess we'll see.
    • You're right. The only thing I can think of is if GH finally decides to bring back Spencer.
    • Sharon Rose Gabet told me on Facebook that she calls this "Baby Raven".
    • I imagine the storyline would now segue into Laura's accident. But I hope they manage to keep Leslie around though. I really don't want her to be written out, or get the DOOL treatment where she just pops up every so often to cause some short term trouble; the character and the actor were such a find.
