FOX’s President of Entertainment Michael Thorn has given a series order for Our Kind of People by Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels (Empire) and Karin Gist (Grey’s Anatomy). Inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s acclaimed novel, Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class, the primetime series will run during the 2021-22 season.

"Viewers can expect to be taken on a journey through the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard — a place where the rich and powerful black elite have come to play for over 50 years. When strong-willed, single mother Angela Vaughn sets out to get back her family’s name, and make a real difference with her revolutionary haircare line that highlights the innate, natural beauty of black women, a dark secret about her mother will turn her world upside-down and leave the community shaken — forever".

It was sort of messy and exposition central - it's obvious that they threw a lot (every?) soap cliches at the wall, but I also think the pilot could've benefitted from using a more stream-lined approach and focusing on Angela's character and POV and letting the other characters come in later. I'm a bit surprised since both Empire and Star had such strong pilots. I will say that it did seem to get it together for the last act but I'm not sure if people stuck around that long.

I struggled through watching this. Maybe I just had high hopes. As others have said, the writing was all over the place!! Too many characters. I had trouble keeping track of who/how each were supposed to tie in. The episode definitely should have featured Angela arriving and filling in her history with flashbacks. The 2nd ep could have introduced the family she's trying to infiltrate and feature them. Ep 3 should have been the nominating party tying them together.

Just my thoughts...shows aren't given the time to develop anymore. Everything tries too hard to be guns blazing from jump.

This week was much better paced, but it feels oddly dated. One thing is transition things when changing the scene and at the same time trying to show off how wealthy Martha's Vineyard is and how it's The Hamptons for black people - I mean, I get it in a way because as a white guy from Europe I had never heard of it before, but surely it could be done in a less... early 2000s way? A lot of the script also comes across as a bit 20-30 years out of date weirdly enough. I can't quite put my finger on it.

The first eppy reminded me of Love and Hip Hop.  Folks doing way too much out of the gate to become HBIC.  I have not watched after that.  I'm not even curious.  Miss "I need a nasal decongestant" Yaya Dacosta as lead?  Not even shirtless Morris Chestnut can get me to watch.

    • She could have easily tied them into the Cottage Mystery...(they could have easily explained going on adventures with Bea, babysitting) The house that Tony and Annabelle lived in could have been the coachhouse of the property that Qualo and Henry live in, or at the very least Nola would have been totally in on ghosts and secrets of her brother's house. But they kind of just sat around for months.  The clip of Van and Billy's impromptu wedding shows how sidelined Nola and Quint became...Nola isn't even around butting in on them getting married, its all Reva (though it is a more interesting Reva where Mindy and her or going at it and insulting each other..THAT Reva was fun.)  I loved it when those two would go at it. Somehow they could have resurrected that antogonistic relationship and not have Billy worshing at the throne of Reva.  When they brought JC back on recurring they should have had him at least warn Annie about Jeva pulling her down..."Darlin' I love my brother, but when he has ole Reva in his sites he will drop any woman to try to win her back...and then he will get bored with her...she's like booze is to me and you...he hates it but he needs it..get out while you can!"
    • It's been brought up that Empty Nest was a time slot hit. Here's Empty Nest schedule and seasonal rating in comparison to The Golden Girls. 1988/89: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 6th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 9th. 1989/90: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 6th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 9th. 1990/91: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 10th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 7th. 1991/92: The Golden Girls Saturday 8 pm, 30th (final season). Empty Nest Saturday 9 pm, 22nd.  1992/93: Saturday 9 pm, below the Top 30. 1993/94: Saturday 9 pm, below the Top 30. 1994/95: Saturday 8:30 pm then 8 pm, below the Top 30, and cancelled. Empty Nest 7 season run equaled the parent show The Golden Girls.
    • In an interesting turn of irony, when Somerset came onto the airwaves in 1970... it ran against Dark Shadows and beat it in the ratings fairly quickly.  Then when Edge of Night moves to ABC in December 1975 and put against Somerset, the slow ratings rise that Somerset was allegedly having in late 1975 is derailed. From reading the write ups of the final year, the show dropped the May/December romance.. which viewers enjoyed and was getting the show some good press... the original cast member was sidelined due to medical issues, and the show featured pure crime stories without any balance. I think the crime focus was an attempt to compete with EON.  However, people that were into crime stories/mysteries weren't going to tune into Somerset for their fix.. not when Edge of Night was known for that.. and that show was running on a high quality wise when the network switch occurred.

    • Erwin Nicholson's last episode as SFT ep was 11/21. Whitesell started 11/22/85. Erwin was on board from March 8, 1985 so less than 9 months. Whitesell lasts six months (approximately) before P&G moved him to AW for two years where he primarily worked with DePriest. Whitesell was replaced on Search by no daytime experience David Lawrence who closed out the show's last six months.

    • I assume in name only?  One Stormy Night wasn't exactly steamy.  If it's a literal throwback then Stephanie's writing about sexy times her own Uncle was having lol. Since I am going to surmise it's just a throwback to the name, Night Sins and Winter Heat both sound sexier.  Just saying.  I swear Jamey (and Ron) just google things and land on the first thing they like and decide it's a good throwback to history without watching it.
    • I usually don't want Tide placement in the middle of an intense sad scene, but this is an interesting point
