GH November 2020 Discussion

I’m still a relative newbie to General Hospital (dipping in and out less than I do with Y&R and Days) but one thing I’ve noticed is the pacing is quite tricky to pin down. Things I’d expect to be drawn out are coming out already. I’m thinking about Cyrus being told about Taggart, and how quickly Sasha has become collateral damage in all this.

This was one of the best weeks I've seen on GH in a long time. There was progress in pretty much every storyline as opposed to pointless filler. I hope the show keeps this momentum going.

Hope so too. They need to be on the canvas. With any luck, they'll have an actual storyline and not just appear to satisfy the episode guarantee

The pacing is bizarre on GH currently. Frankly on all the soaps IMO.

I also think being shut down for months probably led to speeding things up a bit to meet November sweeps.

It amuses me seeing folks thinking GH is fire all of a sudden (I'm referring to soap twitter). Sure, this week has been good ... when things happen, people respond, which I've noticed, but then it never lasts. I feel the same about DAYS. It has some fire weeks but then goes back into the doldrums.

We can hope.

Apparently Roger Howarth took a paycut so Franco's probably not going anywhere (siiiiiiiiigh

lmao true

"Friz" is a dead end. Happy gets you nowhere but the backburner on a soap. But I guess it's better than seeing Liz be trashed. It just feels like so many characters [many women] are secondary ... if that makes any sense

I know

just what I heard around the grapevine on soap twitter so who knows. I figured they'd find a way. It was too good to be true.

It absolutely makes sense, and I think it played the largest part in eroding soap audiences over the years.  This genre does best when steeped in things that traditionally are considered women’s stories.  Family, romance, friendship and community.  Even triangles and rivalries- often with two women fighting over the same man and the women were the dynamic and interesting characters that drove the story engine.

Even Monty’s action/adventure GH maintained that audience because those plots always had strong female characters and an important family or romance angle, or both.  The Asian Quarter storyline payoff was so strong because it was about reuniting a mother and her daughter.  The Left Handed Boy and Ice Princess were about Luke and Laura falling in love around the overall plots.

Somewhere in the late 1990’s the genre seemed to explode with storytelling choices that diminished the importance of the female characters, lost their points of view, and often was demeaning towards them.  They often were downright degrading.  I think that more than anything is what has destroyed daytime.

As far as Liz and Franco- they were doing an okay job setting up story with their family and then that all dropped.  Now after all this time I’m not even sure that Liz deserves better, because they have had her justify so much awful storylines and pairings over the years.

Just when they finally figured out what they wanted to do with Dev...

Tbh I have been waiting for something like this for a long time. The cast has been wayyyy too crowded for too long, but at the same time I feel as though they're getting rid of the wrong people again. Some characters who haven't been used well in years are still hanging on, while other characters who have potential are being squandered and then killed off.

And I think we can finally confirm without a doubt that Frank Valentini has no identity except to be Mo's little bitch. Clearly the role of Sonny has gone to Mo's head and he thinks he runs the damn show like it's Corinthos Coffee. I never would've guessed that Frank would sacrifice one of his pets for one of Mo's.

Hey Mo, do the fans a favor and tell Frank that you don't really like Roger Howarth lol

    • It's funny you say that because part of the entertainment of the trials on the show are all the day players who come on as witnesses and jurors.  I'm certain it was like the Law and Order of its time. It employed so many New York actors, that if you look close enough, there's usually someone vaguely recognizable in the courtroom.
    • I will defend Dante.  People already suspect he may be a bit unstable from time to time (from his time as a prisoner).  And, he's taking care of other people's kids from time to time.  So, he has reason to be cautious with those in his care.
    • Josh continues to try and milk Abbott/Newman rivalry. First it was Billy/Victoria, then Kyle/Summer, then Noah/Allie (that worked out well) and now Kyle/Claire. Do we have any inkling when Billy Flynn will arrive and who he will play? I'm sure Cole's illness will mostly play offscreen. What's in store for Nick and Sharon? Is it time to put them back together? I can't see any other romantic options. Nick has no children on the canvas to play off, as Christian is never seen. Sharon has only Mariah onscreen.
    • I would appreciate (if they're not coming), for future scripts to refer to them by their iconic hairdos.  For example, if Hope needs to call Chelsea because Bo has Sepsis, I'd like Shawn-D to say, "My Mom called Chelsea (the one with the sassy short black hair) for an update." Also, new rule, if Melanie does return, she needs to dye her hair back to red.  I googled who she was five times during Victor's funeral.

    • Broderick, thank you for all of the info [I edited for space]. I am so grateful for everyone filling in the blanks for me. I suspected the Nora/Eliot scene was very important and it was setting something up but I didn't know what. Can't wait to see it play out. The two actors had such a great back and forth. I should have made the Paige/Patty Hearst connection. I thought Paige was in love with Brian from the first episode I watched but it seemed as if they were brother and sister. Steve kept being affectionate with her so I assumed he was the love interest. Then she was affectionate with someone else and well..she's a very busy woman. I can't wait to see Frances Fisher show up. (I'm trying to be vague because I don't know what would be a spoiler in this storyline) Now it makes sense why Draper would be upset. I didn't get the whole background of why he didn't go to NY. I'm a sucker for good acting, so I might still side with April and Margo, if the writers don't give Draper more to do besides yelling.  He had more chemistry with Logan, but I know that's not happening.  Something else I noticed: the show really takes care with even the smallest parts. The acting is superb. Too often, I noticed on older soaps they don't take care with the recurring or day players (Ryan's Hope was so bad with this that I couldn't make it through some episodes). It's only been six episodes, but so far, the casting department was spot on.
    • I thought Dante was overreacting.  Gio made some mistakes but he's young and he tried.  It's not like he dragged two 14 years to a party and made them get blackout drunk.  Dante can have the initial upset reaction, but to go on and on was a bit much.
    • His (adoptive) nieces.  Chelsea and Stephanie.  I think Abby was involved too, but I am not sure if they are related lol.
    • That was such a dark story. I never liked Swamp girl after that. And then the dating your cousin thing. I think wasn’t Max in a triangle with two of his cousins?
    • Thank you, @j swift.  I'm probably more sympathetic to Draper Scott than most audience members are -- even though I'm absolutely CRAZY about Ann Williams & her bizarre Margo Huntington character

The more I watch these episodes -- and I've watched several of them a zillion times, I'm ashamed to admit -- you realize there's a WHOLE lot of passive-aggressive hostility brewing inside Margo Huntington about Draper.  She wants to take April AWAY from him and recreate the childhood that she never got to experience with April, because of the adoption 25 years ago.  Draper has sense enough to realize how heartless and vindictive Margo really is about other people's lives and their feelings, but he bites his tongue rather than poison his wife's mind about how horrible her mother really is.  And I admire him for that.  He's a sweet boy.
    • Unfortunately, as the 90s wore on, Felicia started wearing as many gray and neutral tones as Giorgio Armani and Donna Karan could produce, and the shoulder pads deflated to a drop sleeve.
