Wow.

Well, I feel guilty then. Because I liked Monday's episode mostly. And part of that was the fact that rather than do what the writers usually do and have Brady turn against Kristen, they had him understanding where she was coming from (again Kristen's throughline being children) and trying to cover it up. It was nice to see them deal with drama TOGETHER for a change. It made sense. Just like it would make sense to me when (if) Kristen confesses.

I like the start of Jake so far. Of course, it could be that BB is playing it enough close to the vest that this could easily be Stefan as well playing a game (that scene in front of Gabi Chic). After all, before Stefan came to Salem, wasn't he a made man. Made from what? Enough mystery for wiggle room.

I don't like how they are writing Abby/Chad. When I was like a regular viewer, they had written her out by having her go crazy. It was nicely built. And Friday was nicely built. Yesterday, it felt sooooooo rushed. And Mr. Flynn felt like he was annoyed.

I liked Gabi having a talk to.

That was pretty much it.

Okay, I thought it was a good episode. I especially liked that I did not expect anyone to randomly pop up in the middle of the episode...which is exactly what happened with Steve, John, and Marlena. oKay and Rafe.

I also liked that while they did not do the Brady/Kristen thread today, that they gave it a mention at least which I liked.

And yay!!! I figured once Kayla said that Abby was not relapsing that she was POISONED. So much more interested.

Loved that John and Marlena were in two different plots and met up in time to run into Orpheus.

Oh, yes, I know all that. But I do like to give credit where credit is due.  I liked the week before last and this week appears to be so far so good. Other than the start of Abby plot, it hasn't been too jarring for me even when they rotate plots out. So far. lol.

But of course I do have experience with how RC writes a soap so...we will see how it goes.

The thing with Brady & Kristen is... ugh, just ugh.  Can't get behind them as viable couple, and not just because of TomSell or J&M, but because of what RC wrote just SIX months ago!  I know in Salem time, it's been 18 months, but for the viewer, this is a BIG ask.  Brady protecting Kristen is fine for all the reasons the dialogue is listing, but what doesn't track was her confrontation with Victor.  If he really "taunted" her about Eric, the wedding, Theresa, MaskNicole, and her history as a raging lunatic, I could accept her "snapping" and stabbing him... but the fight was tame and for Kristen, she pretty calmly and lucidly stabbed him.  This is a big miss in an otherwise fire story.

But the show has mostly been so good lately.  The only thing I have zero interest in now is Justin/Kayla/Steve/Hope and, honestly, any form of J&M's involvement in it.  I get it's a thread that should be included, but I so want to move on from this whole mess.  I prefer J&M in the Orpheus orbit, which is such a surprisingly hit development for me.  I'm even interested in Rafe because of it.  I will say, though, even though I don't like the triangle--I appreciate the issue of Kayla's autonomy re. Steve... this was brought up in 2015/16, but I like that they are revisiting it... I just want it to go somewhere and not be a blip story beat.

Now with the two new stories this week: Jake and Abby.  I'm definitely paying attention to the Brandon Barash story and I'll sit through Ben because seeing this through his eyes IS a smart narrative move... I wouldn't rush this, which happens too often now.  I can't wait to see Kate Mansi & BB work together.  Now Abby... thank God Ben has finally been brought up, and F Ciara.  I HATE her.  Glad Abby is being drugged and not relapsing, but again, they could have stretched out that reveal... hope this leads to something juicy.  Even if it's obvious and it's Gabi, it's still juicy stuff... but it doesn't have to be a character who's on canvas right now.

True.

The show has gotten better in the past few weeks. It’s sort of has gone back to normal, or as normal as DAYS can be lol. I think Ron just needed his to get his OTT rocks off or something and now that we’re hopefully passed that, I’m looking forward to what’s to come

    • Kelly was a horribly-written character overall. Just think, two Emmy-winning actresses (including Cynthia Watros, Nina, GH, and Annie, GL) couldn't make it work. Pamela is campy, but so are Dani, Vanessa, Leslie, and Joey. And, I don't want to be too judgy because my love for camp changes depending on the show. OLTL, DAYS, and some eras of GH had me rolling with the camp. However, Passions was overkill and I hated it. And, here, I can take it or leave it. It's ok in small doses (note to RC). I see this show as more of a serious drama.
    • I think one of the reasons that pilot didn't get picked up was because Vicki L was associated more with being Thelma Harper and playing older then she was playing her own age.  It was a blessing it didn't get picked up, or we would have been deprived of the syndicated era of Mama's Family.   Also, worth noting a Pre Night Court Marsha Warfield and pre Perfect Strangers Rebecca Arthur in the cast.  All talented women, but stuck with a bad script. And the other pilot had a pre Fran Fine.. Fran Drescher as the best friend.  I think that pilot might have been picked up if Karen Valentine and Fran Drescher switched roles.
    • So, on rewatch....did Rick and Mindy never have sex?
    • Cady had a fairly posh accent or manner as Rosanna - the character was a 180 from Dixie when she went to ATWT, and it was a huge success initially. As someone mostly only familiar with the nagging, miserable or clueless Dixie of the mid-late '90s and early 2000s it was what convinced me Cady could act. I thought she was incredible in her first run. Later, in future stints, her hair and story and performances were all over the place but a lot of that was down to the show for me. She brought some of Rosanna back with her to Dixie in her ill-fated return and a lot of people didn't like it, which I understood but I did think the character needed some change. I think she's had a little bit of the same persona and arch performance in every role she's played since, including Jennifer Horton at DAYS or Kelly at Y&R, who later became a maniac and was easily the worst work I've ever seen Cady do. It has kind of infected her overall mannerisms, I'll allow that, but I do think she brought Dixie back together as herself while still evolving the character when she returned to AMC again in 2012-13. Nonetheless, for me the upshot is that this is a character where Cady's kookier recent performance style suits the role. But I can understand it grating for people.
    • Yeah, Loretta Swit's passing stings. My late dad LOVED the show (he died last November) and watched it religiously. In first run and repeats.  And I was literally born the day after the show's premiere, so I grew up with it! I know many loved later, softer Margaret, but I loved Early Hot Lips. In real life, I'm all for less misogyny, but to me, the early years of M*A*S*H were just funnier. May Loretta Swit rest in peace. Thanks for all the memories connected to my dad!

    • I agree that she isn't Dixie or Rosanna and shouldn't be acting like either. I just found it strange that she had a naive Southern character and a wealthy urbane character in the past and didn't experiment with accents before (unless I missed it, correct me if I'm wrong). She used to do improv characters on YouTube. She's probably doing something similar here.

    • And here I thought I'd never think about Lauren Tewes again after her brief appearance in Twin Peaks Season 3.
    • I may be the single person who does not mind Transatlantic Campy Pamela. I think it perfectly suits this sort of Absolutely Fabulous-esque supporting character she's playing much more than it did when Cady tried weird and often broad stuff at AMC* or Y&R, or later stints at ATWT. She's not Dixie and she's not trying to be. I will freely admit some of the other chances she took at other shows often came off stiff, hammy or downright mortifying (Kelly Andrews, come on down). (* - and I say that as one of the few who was somewhat into Cady trying to make Dixie more cosmopolitan in the Rosanna Cabot mold in mid-2000s AMC, just to liven the character up again)
    • There’s absolutely nothing exciting happening storyline wise but I’m always happy to see the vets on my screen so I’ll take what I can get. It’s also just nice to see them all dressed up in the same room, it always gives classic Y&R vibes. The best part? No Phyllis.
