They were still intertwined, but they were allowed to have independent lives and interest away from one another. Writing choices like that would never happen on soaps today. That and there was so many close calls over the years of just when you thought they’d get back together, Nikki gets pregnant, Victor is in love with Hope, Nikki having a secret affair with Brad etc yet the two were always jealous and protective of each other... with Nikki taunting Christine in the aftermath of Victor’s shooting to Victor taunting Josh Landers that he knew of Josh’s history and what happened to Veronica.
