Today we are beginning to hear rumblings of my least favorite thing on social media; bad correlations (see the tweet in the next reply for an example).

For example, "if Will Smith is forgiven by Hollywood for assault why can't they forgive person X (used to defend everyone from Roseanne to Mel Gibson).

We all know that's not how public perception works.  We all know people in all professions can have a variety of opinions.  We all know that we can only be responsible for our own attitudes and beliefs.  And we all know the role of intersectionality in the perception of these events.

So, stop the "hot takes" based on people totally unconnected in time and space to this event.  There is no rhetorical logic to those arguments.

Rescind his Academy Award?  Don't be ridiculous!

His behaviour was bad, but let's keep things in perspective.....

I quoted an article in the NY Post after only reading headline, so you'll get no judgement from me.

I was just making the point that these false correlations on social media are foolish.

He slapped someone. That hardly makes him Public Enemy nr 1!  

I'm not condoning what he did. It was completely out of line and he should face some consequences, but it was hardly the crime of the century.

To be fair, I think there is room for a cultural discussion about how police intervention with black men, macho pride, and a false sense of comrade would prevent Chris Rock from pressing charges.

Roman Polanski may have been expelled by the Academy in 2018 but he was awarded an Oscar in 2003. He had already fled the country after pleading guilty to rape of a minor in the 1970s. He also had other accusations against him from that period.

Of course, but the point remains that a correlation between the public perception of an artist and their art has changed from the 1970s to 2003, 2018, and 2022, just the members of the academy have changed.  So, to make a comparison to an event that happened last night, and to which the academy has had a relatively short time to respond, is faulty rhetoric.

In other words giving Polanski an award in 2003 and then expelling him fifteen years later has no relationship to an event in 2022 because the people, actions, and circumstances are completely different.  It is like saying Will Smith shouldn't have to give up his Oscar if the Patriots were allowed to cheat at the Superbowl in 2014.

What Will Smith did was tacky for national television but not evil.
He didn't punch Chris Rock with the intent to knock him down.
He gave him a soap slap.  You know the type of slap a soap character gives another when insulted, but actually less vehement. This was not Carrie Brady punching Sami Brady at the wedding, to the point of knocking her down. This was more like when Marlena slapped Sami for insulting her.

Again, it's tacky to slap someone and use the F word on national TV.  But no real harm was done.

HOWEVER, I don't like slaps, even minor ones, not even on soaps.  And I would have preferred that this not happen. 

There's no way that celebrities at future events will be able to make the distinction between a minor slap and a punch. 
None of it should happen. 

I am a feminist, and I would have preferred that Jada handle the situation herself.  Maybe her choice would be to make her own statement the next day.  Will stepping in on her behalf was (in his mind) intended to be gallant, but it didn't give her the opportunity to decide for herself.  That's the main thing that bothered me.

I do see the point of not wanting to set a precedent of this being acceptable behavior for future events.

How can you condone this kind of behavior? I should I say lighten what he did. I guess we can go slap anyone now if we don't like what they say.
