Y&R: January 2016 Discussion thread

OK, I've been watching again since the beginning of January. I'm up to the 11th or 12th and ... I have a lot to say. LOL

 

Nice to see Jess Walton getting some airtime. I just adored Jill ripping the Abbott's new ones. Well deserved but Jill is sort of the pot calling the kettle black here. It was still great though. JFP must really want Thompson's Billy to get some fanfare through this storyline. Is this a hopeful sign they drop the Billy is a forever loser mantra? Probably not since Jack remains that way.

 

Why is Gina Tognoni playing Phyllis like a deep-voiced lesbian? Other than that, Phyllis appears to be nothing than Jack's woman. Eh.

 

I have no [!@#$%^&*] to give about Victoria crying over Billy. They've been an awful pairing from the start. Heinle has been an awful mess of a recast. Victoria as a character sucks. Everytime I see Heinle I'd rather be watching Heather Tom, who's tragically wasted on B&B (apart from sweeps Emmy bait) and keep thinking how much better she'd be doing. And she's been gone for HOW long now? Plus, the real Victoria would never be a doormat for Billy Abbott.

 

I don't really know who decided Stitch and Abby should be leads but they should be fired. Abby is so pathetic and needy and insecure. I love how Stitch has no time for her now that his child of the corn is in town. I think the Max drama could make them a bit more interesting and better than the Ashley stuff but I wouldn't miss them if they left tomorrow.

 

I see Michael and Lauren have been relegated to extras. I'm not all that upset as it was Michael overload for years. Lauren and Tracey deserve more though. Can someone remind Pratt that Lauren used to be fiery and have a personality?

 

I like that Beth Maitland is around here and there as Traci. I don't know why they keep up the illusion of her flying back and forth, just have Traci move back to Genoa City. They could still use her the same.

 

I sort of like, in a bad camp way, Sandy sabotaging Nick and the Condiment (I love all her nicknames, BTW). It's a tragedy that Kelly Sullivan has sucked away airtime from other actresses. Like trashing Avery which sent Collins running ... And Sharon Case sits on the backburner.

 

The show feels slightly lethargic and boring. The lighting is AWFUL now which makes everyone look like ghosts with their makeup. Heinle looked a mess like always. I swear Burton looked like he wanted to keel over.

 

Why is Kevin now Y&R's Spinelli? So no one bats an eye that he helps the PD? LOL. Only on a soap can someone like Kevin work for them. Kevin remains a waste. Rikaart is fine but it's Kevin who seems to get a lot of airtime but doesn't really do anything. It's nice to see Camryn Grimes getting airtime again but like Kevin, Mariah is doing nothing. And they come off like besties, not in any way like "I want you".

 

I don't hate Paul as chief of police but eh ... at least Davidson is being given things to do and has some airtime, I guess. I see Dylan is taking over of course. That's really what it's all about.

 

I like the actors playing Luca and Marisa. I like that Noah's back at Newman but I'm supposed to take Noah seriously with Adamson's weird-ass haircut?

 

I like seeing Michael E. Knight again. He looks better than a lot of actors on the show, which is saying something because he looked incredibly unhappy and unhealthy in AMC's last few years. I could be here for Neville/Ashley. Unfortunately, everytime I see Davidson now as Ashley I see Kristen. It doesn't help that Davidson plays her with an attitude and they glop on the lipstick. What is Ashley sick with? Some illness that they're writing by the seat of their pants?

 

Everytime I tune in Cane and Lily are estranged and awkwardly talking. Can we just get rid of them and call it a day? Lord. Cane seems wasted.

 

And ew at Neil and Hilary. And the whole breakup thing wtih Nikki? LMAO. I couldn't with how bad the scene was of Neil and Hilary in the lab and Hilary with that red dress and red lipstick and her come !@#$%^&*] me eyes. It was like a bad porn movie. How on earth she wants this creep over Devon? I don't get it. And all Devon seems to do is pout and shout and whine and stomp his feet. He's not all that much more appealing than his father.

 

And Victor. Yuck. He's such a cartoon now. It's nowhere near the same character he used to be. Damn. Awful. I felt like he wanted to start slapping Nikki around for the Neil thing. When he told her not to embarass him in public? He acted like an abuser. Ugh. Makes me ill. But I was LMAO as he wined and dined Kevin.

 

The show is .... something else. It's absolutely nothing like Y&R should be, but it was slightly watchable in a trashy campy way. Which is sad to say. Again, I'm only up to the 11th or 12th. I haven't seen Thompson on-air yet. More thoughts soon when I watch the rest.

@KMan101, I am SO here for your thoughts!  I mainly stick to spoilers and summaries these days but you've picked up right where I left off.  Your assessments of the characters and where they are, seems pretty spot on.  And Kevin as Y&R's Spinelli, LOL, I never thought of that but it seems so true now!

For what it's worth, the show seemed lethargic and boring and not at all what Y&R was about at its best when I last watched so at least in that regard, it's consistent.  And yes, about the Lighting!  I've been complaining about this for well over a year now!

 

Looking forward to reading the rest of your thoughts.

@KMan101 I also picked up on Victor seeming lime an abuser with his "Dont embarass me in public". That dialogue was very domineering and of course EB thinks Victor is some bad ass alpha mail, so he delivered it as a threat. Gave me pause.

Sorry - but where has Summer been?  Wouldn't Phyllis or Nick or someone have asked about her?  I know - wait...kyle?  I mean wouldn't someone be asking about these people?  They didn't die, right?

It's better without Summer. HK is decent enough in the role, but the character is insufferable, and with Kyle being demoted to recurring, I wonder if they'll bother with a new story for her.

Aw man, is she back to doing that? She started playing Dinah Marler like a swashbucklin' hunchback bulldyke for a while there on GL. I don't get it.

Gina T is just a naturally hard actress, the dotting wife stuff doesn't work but when they have her scheming and taking the piss out of Victor she's fire. I hope they keep Phyllis and Billy in each others orbits and she ends up boinking him, sick of her being Aunt Jacklyn's doormat

 

She was filming last week so she's not gone. Her contract should be up soon so I think TPTB are prepping to recast or just get rid of the character all together.

 

To quickly comment on Thursday's episode before today's starts, this hit n run storyline has highlighted how much of a shaky whiner Noah is. I can't remember a time on the show he wasn't pouting and whining about something. I was hoping with this triangle with Marisa and Luca + working under Victor he'd grow some balls but its just the same sad puppy act. Devon is the same way

I know they have to push Billy and Snoretoria to keep their crazy fan base happy and establish JT but I hope they break up again soon. And I wish they would stop bringing up things that happened in the walking comatose intro episode too, makes me  every time. Also butter scotch pudding???? Ew.

 

I asked for more of Billy and Phyllis scheming and they delivered, curious what she has up her sleeve. Maybe she's the one behind the kidnapping + ransom (the flunkie did say yes ma'am at the end)

 

Chelsea seems to be one of the few characters who knows how to navigate TGVN's temper. I was wondering why he was acting like such a protective simp for tech girl, glad its just an act.

 

This whole thing is going to go down at Chelsea's fashion show? How...typically soap opera esque.

NuBilly and GT definitely have chemistry.  IA it's time for Billy and Vic to end.

 

The "room" that they are holding Adam hostage   The story itself is a mess and the lack of thought put into the sets just adds to the problem.  Chelsea / Dullen scenes were awkward, but then again the mindset seems to be that current story is not influenced by previous stories or character throughlines.  

 

From what I've seen this week, it looks like Sharon is off her meds.  As another poster mentioned, her scenes with Chelsea earlier this week showed pretty clearly that Crazy Sharon is fixin to make an appearance.
