B&B - May 2015 Discussion thread

Just watched online, I can hardly wait until Monday... haven't felt that way about a soap in forever. I agree with Kenerly that 30 minutes (well, 19 minutes, more like it) is sufficient, and yes, I would take more shows in that format over the hour. Too bad that won't likely happen in network daytime ever again (*sad trumpets* for Prospect Park). B&B is perfect soap viewing for my life right now, incredibly easy to keep up with and leaves me wanting more (especially as B&B is forever recapping sh!t).

Agree. Friday was a good episode and I also can't wait for Monday.

I also agree about the 30 min format. Maybe it's because I watch foreign soaps (which are mostly 30 mins) as well, but I've always preferred soaps being 30 mins to an hour. Not only is it easier for viewers (you can easily watch B&B while making dinner or if you save them for the weekend, it's only 2 1/2 hours minus commercials, basically a movie length), while also I feel is easier on the production end as well (you are only writing half as much story so a HW shouldn't get burned out as fast and don't have as big of a cast to write for)

When P&G announced Guiding Light's cancellation, I mentioned that I thought that As The World Turns should go to 30 Minutes because people were looking at ATWT as the next soap in jeopardy. When ATWT was being cancelled, I wondered wistfully whether both shows could've survived if they had tried each tried a 30 Minutes format.

Although the more I thought about it, I eventually came to the conclusion that P&G was so intent on getting out of producing soaps that they were no longer interested in preserving those shows, at all.

Prospect Park temporarily gave rise to the hope that perhaps other soaps could be revived in the 30 Minutes format but with the exception of B&B, no American daytime soaps seem to be interested in that possibility, no matter how bad the soap gets.

Even though I found myself saying "...just spit it out Maya" several times, the show cleverly (mostly clever) was pretty decent this week about building anticipation. It's nice to see a cliffhanger, even an anticipated one, that doesn't fall flat (*coughs* like Y&R).

Damn it's going to be so uninteresting to see Rick stressing over the fact that Maya was not honest with him instead of the fact that he's been sleeping with a transgender. ''If only you were HONEST/would've told me (when we first met)''. Ugh.

I agree with the people who said this storyline is too politically correct and the above will just be another example of that. It'd be much more interesting if Rick would understand why Maya couldn't tell him, and forgives her, but would still be conflicted (even repulsed) because he's been sleeping with a transgender.

Being transgender feels so irrelevant to this story. Maya could have lied about her name bc she used to be a con artist that got engaged to rich men and swindled them out of their money but she's stopped that and truly fallen for Rick. It seems the reaction would be the same with her lying and keeping a secret being the biggest issue. I dont get why B&B would tell this story if they werent going to actually tell the story.

I know this is so 2 weeks ago but I'm just getting to these eps now...WTF?? It ended on a bombshell cliffhanger of Brooke saying "I KNOW" to Maya and the next ep it's the next morning and she didn't tell Maya after all? WTF?? How are we supposed to believe Maya didn't know what Brooke was talking about when she slammed and stared her down like that

The following Brooke/Maya scenes "the next day" were great but this was a true WTF. Like what even.

PS. Scott Clifton is a horrible, grating actor right now. The scenes when Liam came back to the boathouse and forced Wyatt to tell him the secret were unbearable. The endless thirst from him and the rest has been too much.

However, I did love that cliffhanger w/Wyatt getting all giddy over exposing the scandal to the press. LOL. Darin did a wonderful job.

Him & Maya are too cute.

    • Olivia did have a good reason for what she did. Still, I'd think she would be slower to pass such harsh judgment on Lois since she knows what she herself lived through. I'm hoping we get a softer Olivia when she reflects on everything.   I'm going to disagree with this. I don't think the character has been ruined and trashed, and I don't think it's impossible to come back from this. Yes, a great case can be made that this is out-of-character for Lois, but I can also make a case for people doing out-of-character things when life deals us crazy and impossible moments. Because of the story we're getting from this, I think it was worth putting Lois into this situation.

    • Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but I have been a soap opera fan for only a few years. I started watching General Hospital in the 2010s on tv due to boredom. It wasn't good but it was okay enough to get curious about the soap opera genre. When I eventually got internet I started researching 90s and 2000s General Hospital. I have started only recently researching 80s and 90s Days of Our Lives. I was shocked when I found out that a black soap opera is going to be made, especially because the genre as a whole was on a downward trajectory. Now here I am as a black woman seeing a soap opera from the start. I'm all for Beyond the Gates succeeding.

    • That was so surprising to me today. I didn’t see any spoilers that this was coming up so I loved it!
    • Well, VI was leaving, and while Long admits that killing him was stupid...I do agree with letting him go with a big bang...body missing.  They spent a lot of time and money on Infinity, (which I think might have gotten a bit of a better reputation had it not been the harbinger of a total tonal change with the Bauers and Reardon's decimated and its all Reva and the Lewis and the weird people hanging out around Kyle) so they needed it to end dramatically. They could have done so much more with having Alex go after Kyle and Billy, but that ends and she starts moping over weird and boring Simon. With Kurt..what were you going to do.. cute but boring and perfect and with ties to no one (they had a nice little thing where Bea took him under her wing when everyone left but then she did too..) If they had the balls they would have had Rick and Mindy jump in the sack ( I know, Mindy should have learned birth control by then) I would have had it be Mindy who knows about Rick's drug use and she tries to help him...(not that nobody who came and went) of course, Kurt and Roxie misunderstand..that on top of her bad Sampson Girl thing leaves him to leave her temporarily, and in grand soap tradition, Rick and Mindy console each other (again, I would write it that they always really did, and Mindy rushed into things with Kurt) and she gets knocked up, and loving Rick but also Kurt she chooses to believe it is Kurts (which I could see Princess Mindy doing "My life is perfect and I will it that way, this is Kurts kid")But, she had the dumb model thing, then she burned down the house he was building, she tried to get prefers and he dies (but also Kobe was the one who built him up, then she was gone when he was let go.) Ross believe it or not is one of the last of the "old guard" characters, beside Ed (who is now FauxEd) and Maureen, and Henry and Van (who is ties to being the Lewis family mope.) JVD has made jokes that they didn't write him out as they simply forgot that he was there! Reva doesn't even call her mother when she comes back! I never saw the use of Sarah but they could have reunited them and sent her and Hawk out of town together. Hell, I don't like the Shaynes but she should have mentioned Roxie and Rusty.  The weird thing is that Dylan had a ton of story and was very important to the Van/Bridget baby custody story. By the time Reva comes back Dylan had only been gone a year so its not like people wouldn't know him..( I liked him and Bridget together...) So he comes back in 97 and acts like it's no big deal Reva is alive so they must have talked off camera. But Reva was too busy squacking about that annoying toothy Marah and blank Shayne to talk about anything else.  It's not quite as weird as Van, who obsessed over Peter, comes back to SF and never mentions him...i.e. "I saw Peter this weekend and he so barely remembers me but he is happy with Bridget and Dylan...")
    • Excellent! The OLTL-GH promo places this and the RH episode (which I assume aired directly before this AMC) as airing during the week of Aug. 20.
    • Thanks! There's never enough early 1980s AMC around.    The only actor I don't recognize is the actress playing Wanda, Mike's agent.
